Ages for exoplanet host stars
Age is an important characteristic of a planetary system, but also one that
is difficult to determine. Assuming that the host star and the planets are
formed at the same time, the challenge is to determine the stellar age.
Asteroseismology provides precise age determination, but in many cases the
required detailed pulsation observations are not available. Here we concentrate
on other techniques, which may have broader applicability but also serious
limitations. Further development of this area requires improvements in our
understanding of the evolution of stars and their age-dependent
characteristics, combined with observations that allow reliable calibration of

Filling a blank on the map: 60Â years of fisheries in Equatorial Guinea
Despite a scarcity of pertinent information, it has been possible to reconstruct time series of marine fisheries catches for Equatorial Guinea from 1950 to 2010 using per capita fish consumption and population numbers for small-scale fisheries, catch rates and number of vessels for industrial fisheries and discard rates to estimate the discarded bycatch. Small-scale fisheries, industrial large-scale fisheries, domestic and legal and illegal foreign fisheries and their discards are all included. Total catches were estimated at 2.7 million tonnes over the time period considered, of which 653 000 t were caught domestically compared to 187 000 t reported by FAO. This shows that fisheries have more importance for Equatorial Guinea's food security than the official data suggest. In contrast to what is suggested by official figures, fisheries were shown to be strongly impacted by civil and political unrest; notably, they declined overall because of civil and political conflicts, socio-demographic dynamics, and a growing role of the newly discovered oil resources, which directly and indirectly threaten the food security of the people of Equatorial Guinea

The incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) has been declining in the United States, but these improvements appear to be lagging in blacks compared to whites. To understand racebased patterns in contributions to risk over time, we investigated temporal trends in the prevalence of major risk factors and their attributable hazards for CHD in a large sample of black and white adults living in 4 different communities and followed over the last two decades

Evaluating the Dimensionality of First-Grade Written Composition
PurposeâWe examined dimensions of written composition using multiple evaluative approaches such as an adapted 6+1 trait scoring, syntactic complexity measures, and productivity measures. We further examined unique relations of oral language and literacy skills to the identified dimensions of written composition.
MethodâA large sample of first grade students (N = 527) was assessed on their language, reading, spelling, letter writing automaticity, and writing in the spring. Data were analyzed using a latent variable approach including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.
ResultsâThe seven traits in the 6+1 trait system were best described as two constructs: substantive quality, and spelling and writing conventions. When the other evaluation procedures such as productivity and syntactic complexity indicators were included, four dimensions emerged: substantive quality, productivity, syntactic complexity, and spelling and writing conventions. Language and literacy predictors were differentially related to each dimension in written composition.
ConclusionsâThese four dimensions may be a useful guideline for evaluating developing beginning writerâs compositions
The evolving magnetic topology of Ï Boötis
We present six epochs of spectropolarimetric observations of the hot-Jupiter-hosting star tau Bootis that extend the exceptional previous multiyear data set of its large-scale magnetic field. Our results confirm that the large-scale magnetic field of tau Bootis varies cyclicly, with the observation of two further magnetic reversals; between 2013 December and 2014 May and between 2015 January and March. We also show that the field evolves in a broadly solar-type manner in contrast to other F-type stars. We further present new results which indicate that the chromospheric activity cycle and the magnetic activity cycles are related, which would indicate a very rapid magnetic cycle. As an exemplar of long-term magnetic field evolution, tau Bootis and this long-term monitoring campaign presents a unique opportunity for studying stellar magnetic cycles
Endocrine Disruptors and Obesity: An Examination of Selected Persistent Organic Pollutants in the NHANES 1999â2002 Data
Recent evidence suggests that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may cause perturbations in endogenous hormonal regulation that predispose to weight gain. Using data from NHANES (1999â2002), we investigated the association between body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs) via multiple linear regressions. Consistent interaction was found between gender, ln oxychlordane and ln p,pâ DDT. Also, we found an association between WC and ln oxychlordane and ln hpcdd in subjects with detectable levels of POPs, whereas an association between WC and ln p,pâ DDT was observed in all subjects. Furthermore, ln Ocdd showed an increase with higher WC and BMI, whereas, ln trans-nonachlor decreased with higher BMI. Hence, BMI and WC are associated with POPs levels, making the chemicals plausible contributors to the obesity epidemic
