An Overview of Serial Depletions of Global Marine Fisheries 1950 to 2019

Overfishing is a global issue that poses a significant risk to the entire ocean ecosystem in diminishing biodiversity and ecosystem function. This thesis examined the pattern and pace of fisheries depletions due to commercial fishing during the past 70 years. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Division of Fisheries and Aquaculture maintains a database of global hauls of marine taxa (reported in metric tonnes) from 1950 – 2019. These data were queried to determine the total number and sequence of fisheries depletions documented by the historic record. Analysis of this database showed progressive, linearly-increasing exploitation of marine/aquatic taxa from 619 in 1950 to 2,459 in 2019. Depletions of taxa, on the other hand, were observed to increase exponentially (ca. 5% annually) such that nearly 25% of exploited taxa are currently depleted. The current trends of exploitations and depletions projected forward in time produces a textbook example of a Malthusian Catastrophe in 2056. At that time, exponentially-increasing depletions will equal linearly-increasing exploitations. The ecological impact of the Malthusian Catastrophe and its cascading effects across the global ocean ecosystem are unknown, but likely herald the demise of the commercial fishing industry and potential collapse of the entire marine ecosystem

George Grenville conducted himself in a way honorable to his post. Unlike his predecessors, he did not relish the spoils of his office giving into lavish gifts to himself and salary. Grenville actively sought to consolidate the debt through his unwavering work ethic and honest business ideas. He also sought a new way to govern and control the American colonies. Where most other members of British elite and Parliament turned a deaf ear to American requests, Grenville entertained ideas of their relative freedom and control; most notably in tax collection. Britain and America struggled over finances and financial reformation. America suffered from a depression that made the Currency Act intolerable. The Sugar Act and Stamp Act culminated in the colonists pushing back for the old ways of autonomy under the Old Colonial System. Debt reconciliation attempts left the colonials hostile towards Grenville and Great Britain. Though profitable, the Sugar Act alone did not generate enough money to solve the British debt crisis from the Seven Years War. The Stamp Act caused widespread and active resistance to its policies. Americans marched against the tax and burned their stamps in public. To quell the frustration and rioting, Grenville attempted to let the Americans create their own taxation system to quiet the calls against taxation without representation. Grenville heard and respected the concerns voiced to him by Americans who worried over Britain enacting a direct tax in their country. He called American leaders to Britain and wrote the leaders who could not appear in person, warning them that failure to settle with him would result in a Parliamentary plan being enforced. When not one of those he spoke with could create an American-implemented tax plan, he stayed true to his word and the Parliamentary plan became law

Unlike his predecessors, he sought compromise with the British colonies in North America, did not abuse the power and influence granted to him by him appointment, and did not award himself lavish gifts and a high salary under the guise of financial responsibility. Grenville actively sought to consolidate Britain\u27s debt through his unwavering work ethic and honest business ideas. Left in debt by the costly Seven Years War, Britain expected her colonies to pay for the war waged for their benefit. At the same time that Britain passed new taxes, the colonies suffered a severe economic depression. Thus British attempts at debt reconciliation left the colonists hostile towards Grenville and Great Britain, who they perceived as ignoring their financial plight. Grenville heard their complaints and concerns, understood they felt threatened by British lawmakers enacting a direct tax in their country, and offered them the chance to tax themselves. When the colonists failed to provide a new system, he fell back on his original taxation plan created through Parliament

The Effects of Expiratory Muscle Strength Training on Swallowing and Voice Measures in Healthy Older Adults

This study investigated the effects of a four week expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) exercise program on healthy older adults (65-79 years). The investigators were interested in possible changes to the swallowing and voice production systems, both of which are in the scope of practice for a speech language pathologist. Specific voice variables included maximum phonation time, conversational intensity level, and upper and lower limits of available intensity range. Swallowing variables were related to tongue function and included maximum isometric pressure and mean swallowing pressure. Finally, maximum expiratory pressure was measured as a comparative value to other EMST studies. A Control group and a Treatment group were involved in this study, with both groups screened for any past history of speech, language, swallowing, or respiratory disorders. Pre-test to post-test significant differences were found between the Treatment and Control group for the upper limit of available intensity range and maximum expiratory pressure. The results indicate that older adults can increase their vocal volume following an EMST exercise program. Further research is necessary to evaluate other lingual strength and function variables, and effects of detraining following EMST device use

Dynamic Composite Data Physicalization Using Wheeled Micro-Robots

This paper introduces dynamic composite physicalizations, a new class of physical visualizations that use collections of self-propelled objects to represent data. Dynamic composite physicalizations can be used both to give physical form to well-known interactive visualization techniques, and to explore new visualizations and interaction paradigms. We first propose a design space characterizing composite physicalizations based on previous work in the fields of Information Visualization and Human Computer Interaction. We illustrate dynamic composite physicalizations in two scenarios demonstrating potential benefits for collaboration and decision making, as well as new opportunities for physical interaction. We then describe our implementation using wheeled micro-robots capable of locating themselves and sensing user input, before discussing limitations and opportunities for future work
