On the scalar graviton in n-DBI gravity
n-DBI gravity is a gravitational theory which yields near de Sitter inflation
spontaneously at the cost of breaking Lorentz invariance by a preferred choice
of foliation. We show that this breakdown endows n-DBI gravity with one extra
physical gravitational degree of freedom: a scalar graviton. Its existence is
established by Dirac's theory of constrained systems. Firstly, studying scalar
perturbations around Minkowski space-time, we show that there exists one scalar
degree of freedom and identify it in terms of the metric perturbations. Then, a
general analysis is made in the canonical formalism, using ADM variables. It is
useful to introduce an auxiliary scalar field, which allows recasting n-DBI
gravity in an Einstein-Hilbert form but in a Jordan frame. Identifying the
constraints and their classes we confirm the existence of an extra degree of
freedom in the full theory, besides the two usual tensorial modes of the
graviton. We then argue that, unlike the case of (the original proposal for)
Horava-Lifschitz gravity, there is no evidence that the extra degree of freedom
originates pathologies, such as vanishing lapse, instabilities and strong
self-coupling at low energy scales.Comment: 30 pages, 1 figur
Selfies of imperial cormorants (Phalacrocorax atriceps): What is happening underwater?
During the last few years, the development of animal-borne still cameras and video recorders has enabled researchers to observe what a wild animal sees in the field. In the present study, we deployed miniaturized video recorders to investigate the underwater foraging behavior of Imperial cormorants (Phalacrocorax atriceps). Video footage was obtained from 12 animals and 49 dives comprising a total of 8.1 h of foraging data. Video information revealed that Imperial cormorants are almost exclusively benthic feeders. While foraging along the seafloor, animals did not necessarily keep their body horizontal but inclined it downwards. The head of the instrumented animal was always visible in the videos and in the majority of the dives it was moved constantly forward and backward by extending and contracting the neck while travelling on the seafloor. Animals detected prey at very short distances, performed quick capture attempts and spent the majority of their time on the seafloor searching for prey. Cormorants foraged at three different sea bottom habitats and the way in which they searched for food differed between habitats. Dives were frequently performed under low luminosity levels suggesting that cormorants would locate prey with other sensory systems in addition to sight. Our video data support the idea that Imperial cormorants' efficient hunting involves the use of specialized foraging techniques to compensate for their poor underwater vision.Fil: GĂłmez Laich, Agustina Marta. The article analyze the legal framework established by the law N° 20.529 related with the provisional manager of educative institutions. It places the institution as an
educative public service similar to comptrollers established for other public services or highly regulated activities. It explains its legal and regulatory backgrounds to provide a legal analysis.
Effect of thermocycling on the tensile and shear bond strengths of three soft liners to a denture base resin
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: In clinical practice, loss of adhesion between the silicone-based denture liner and the denture base resin is always an undesirable event that might cause loss of material softness, water sorption, bacterial colonization and functional failure of the prosthesis. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effect of thermocycling on tensile and shear bond strengths of three soft liner materials to a denture base acrylic resin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three resilient liners (Mucopren-Soft, Mollosil-Plus and Dentusil) and a heat-polymerized acrylic resin (QC-20) were processed according to manufacturers' directions. Sixty specimens (14 x 14 mm cross-sectional area) per bond strength test (20 for each liner) were fabricated and either stored in water at 37ÂșC for 24 hours (control groups; n=10) or thermocycled 3,000 times in water between 5ÂșC and 55ÂșC (test groups; n=10). The specimens were tested in tensile and shear strength in a universal testing machine until fracture. Bond strength means were compared between water-stored and thermocycled groups for each material, as well as among materials for each treatment (water storage or thermocycling). Failure mode (adhesive, cohesive and mixed) after debonding was assessed. Data were analyzed statistically by paired Student's t-test and ANOVA at 5% significance level. RESULTS: The water-stored groups had statistically significant higher bond strengths than the thermocycled groups (

How Roads Affect the Spatial Use of the Guanaco in a South American Protected Area: Human Connectivity vs Animal Welfare
Roads can aïŹect animals as well as their habits at diïŹerent levels. Avoidance behavior is a common response of animals to this type of perturbation, preventing access to areas rich in resources. The eïŹects of roads on ungulates have not been studied in South America extensively, especially in arid environments. We have studied the space use by ungulates in relation to roads, using a dung heap count and camera traps. The aim was to evaluate whether paved road and unpaved road may have an eïŹect on the spatial use of a low density population of guanacos (Lama guanicoe) in Ischigualasto Provincial Park, Argentina. We observed an increase in dung heap abundance in unpaved road asrespect to paved road, this diïŹerence was larger for both. Besides, we recorded less individuals in paved road zones than in unpaved road zones. This showed that roads, especially paved roads, negatively aïŹect the space used by guanacos. Our results are relevant to the management and conservation of animal populations in protected areas since spatial segregation due to the presence ofroads may lead to the isolation of individuals. It is important to pay attention and further assess the eïŹects that roads can have in the native fauna.Fil: Cappa, Flavio MartĂn. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones CientĂficas y TĂ©cnicas.
