    The geography of strain: organizational resilience as a function of intergroup relations

    Organizational resilience is an organization’s ability to absorb strain and preserve or improve functioning, despite the presence of adversity. In existing scholarship there is the implicit assumption that organizations experience and respond holistically to acute forms of adversity. We challenge this assumption by theorizing about how adversity can create differential strain, affecting parts of an organization rather than the whole. We argue that relations among those parts fundamentally shape organizational resilience. We develop a theoretical model that maps how the differentiated emergence of strain in focal parts of an organization triggers the movements of adjoining parts to provide or withhold resources necessary for the focal parts to adapt effectively. Drawing on core principles of theories about intergroup relations, we theorize about three specific pathways—integration, disavowal, and reclamation—by which responses of adjoining parts to focal part strain shape organizational resilience. We further theorize about influences on whether and when adjoining parts are likely to select different pathways. The resulting theory reveals how the social processes among parts of organizations influence member responses to adversity and, ultimately, organizational resilience. We conclude by noting the implications for organizational resilience theory, research, and practice.Accepted manuscrip

    Impact of early-exposure environmental education on a child\u27s selection of words and creativity

    Environmental education researchers have long identified a connection between formative play experiences in nature settings and pro-environmental behaviors (i.e., career paths) of their subjects later in life. Most studies have been post-hoc retrospective looks that have not had the ability to assess causation. As more children are removed from free-play wilderness opportunities, some schools are seeking means to create those formative experiences within the educational setting, but research has not been done to address the impact that this approach has on developing particular environmental behaviors. To address that gap in the literature, this study seeks to identify the impacts that a forest-immersion pre-kindergarten has on the connection of the child with the natural world. Twenty-seven pre-kindergarten students from two academic programs participated in a quasi-experimental study in which they responded to age-appropriate divergent-thinking tasks. Measures of fluency, flexibility, originality, and creativity were compared. Parents completed a survey containing open-ended questions and a 5-point Likert-scaled instrument on ecological perceptions. A significant difference was found between the two groups. The forest-immersion group used more nature-based words in their ideations, which reflects a cognitive impact stemming from their educational environment. Despite both programs employing a Reggio Emilia-inspired teaching philosophy, the students in the forest-immersion program expressed greater numbers of ideations and higher creativity scores as well. Forest-immersion programs us ed in early-childhood education have the potential to impact the cognition of the child as reflected in language use. Subsequent studies need to be done to follow these children as they progress through their education to identify lasting impacts that may arise in the form of pro-environmental behaviors

    \u27We Are Radical\u27: The Right to the City Alliance and the Future of Community Organizing

    This paper seeks to situate current efforts of The Right to the City Alliance and selected member groups in a longitudinal and cross-sectional qualitative study of the limits and potential of contemporary organizing. For three decades politicians, policy makers, advocates, academics, and even activists have promoted community-based efforts as the primary vehicle for contemporary social change. Local organizing has been seen as the best site and strategy for initiatives as diverse as community economic development, public school reform, social service delivery, and challenging the powers that be. In almost all cases these efforts have been constrained and moderated by a global political economy of neoliberalism, which promotes community initiatives at the same time as it foists additional burdens on local communities and community organizations. An overview of the Right to the City Alliance and selected member organizations reveals its relatively unique, alternative model of organizing. Study of the organization and its model enables us to look at some of the limits of this nascent effort, including how well the alliance model accomplishes the need for greater scale and power. It also enables us to compare it to other community organizing efforts and see how it fits with and informs contemporary mobilizations since 2010

    What supports hospital pharmacist prescribing in Scotland? A mixed methods, exploratory sequential study.

    While approximately half of all qualified hospital pharmacist independent prescribers (PIPs) in Scotland are active prescribers, there are major differences in prescribing activity across geographical areas. This study aimed to explore, through focus groups, interviews and a questionnaire, hospital PIPs' perceptions of factors associated with prescribing activity and to investigate the infrastructure required to better support active prescribing by PIPs. Findings reinforced the perceived positive impact of supportive pharmacy leadership within the organisation, recognition that prescribing is integral to the clinical pharmacist role and a work environment conducive to prescribing

    Galaxy Clustering and Large-Scale Structure from z = 0.2 to z = 0.5 in Two Norris Redshift Surveys

    (abridged) We present a study of the nature and evolution of large-scale structure based on two independent redshift surveys of faint field galaxies conducted with the 176-fiber Norris Spectrograph on the Palomar 200-inch telescope. The two surveys together sparsely cover ~20 sq. degrees and contain 835 r < 21 mag galaxies with redshifts 0.2 < z < 0.5. Both surveys have a median redshift of z = 0.30. In order to obtain a rough estimate of the cosmic variance, we analyze the two surveys independently. We measure the comoving correlation length to be 3.70 +/- 0.13 h^-1 Mpc at z = 0.30 with a power-law slope gamma = 1.77 +/- 0.05. Dividing the sample into low (0.2 < z < 0.3) and high (0.32 < z < 0.5) redshift intervals, we see no evidence for a change in the comoving correlation length over the redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.5. Similar to the well-established results in the local universe, we find that intrinsically bright galaxies are more strongly clustered than intrinsically faint galaxies and that galaxies with little ongoing star formation, as judged from the rest-frame equivalent width of the [OII]3727, are more strongly clustered than galaxies with significant ongoing star formation. The rest-frame pairwise velocity dispersion of the sample is 326^+67_-52 km s^-1, ~25% lower than typical values measured locally. The appearance of the galaxy distribution, particularly in the more densely sampled Abell 104 field, is quite striking. The pattern of sheets and voids which has been observed locally continues at least to z ~ 0.5. A friends-of-friends analysis of the galaxy distribution supports the visual impression that > 90% of all galaxies at z < 0.5 are part of larger structures with overdensities of > 5.Comment: 40 pages including 26 Postscript figures; revised version to match version accepted by Ap

    Dwell time symmetry in random walks and molecular motors

    The statistics of steps and dwell times in reversible molecular motors differ from those of cycle completion in enzyme kinetics. The reason is that a step is only one of several transitions in the mechanochemical cycle. As a result, theoretical results for cycle completion in enzyme kinetics do not apply to stepping data. To allow correct parameter estimation, and to guide data analysis and experiment design, a theoretical treatment is needed that takes this observation into account. In this paper, we model the distribution of dwell times and number of forward and backward steps using first passage processes, based on the assumption that forward and backward steps correspond to different directions of the same transition. We extend recent results for systems with a single cycle and consider the full dwell time distributions as well as models with multiple pathways, detectable substeps, and detachments. Our main results are a symmetry relation for the dwell time distributions in reversible motors, and a relation between certain relative step frequencies and the free energy per cycle. We demonstrate our results by analyzing recent stepping data for a bacterial flagellar motor, and discuss the implications for the efficiency and reversibility of the force-generating subunits.
