Theory of the Quantum Speed Up

    Get PDF
Insofar as quantum computation is faster than classical, it appears to be irreversible. In all quantum algorithms found so far the speed-up depends on the extra-dynamical irreversible projection representing quantum measurement. Quantum measurement performs a computation that dynamical computation cannot accomplish as efficiently.Comment: 10 pages, RevTex, 1 page of 3 figure

Representations of U(1,q) and Constructive Quaternion Tensor Products

The representation theory of the group U(1,q) is discussed in detail because of its possible application in a quaternion version of the Salam-Weinberg theory. As a consequence, from purely group theoretical arguments we demonstrate that the eigenvalues must be right-eigenvalues and that the only consistent scalar products are the complex ones. We also define an explicit quaternion tensor product which leads to a set of additional group representations for integer ``spin''.Comment: 28 pages, Latex, Dipartimento di Fisica, Universita di Lecce INFN-Sezione di Lecc

Universal Description of Granular Metals at Low Temperatures: Granular Fermi Liquid

We present a unified description of the low temperature phase of granular metals that reveals a striking generality of the low temperature behaviors. Our model explains the universality of the low-temperature conductivity that coincides exactly with that of the homogeneously disordered systems and enables a straightforward derivation of low temperature characteristics of disordered conductors.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

Topographic Mapping of the Quantum Hall Liquid using a Few-Electron Bubble

A scanning probe technique was used to obtain a high-resolution map of the random electrostatic potential inside the quantum Hall liquid. A sharp metal tip, scanned above a semiconductor surface, sensed charges in an embedded two-dimensional electron gas. Under quantum Hall effect conditions, applying a positive voltage to the tip locally enhanced the 2D electron density and created a ``bubble'' of electrons in an otherwise unoccupied Landau level. As the tip scanned along the sample surface, the bubble followed underneath. The tip sensed the motions of single electrons entering or leaving the bubble in response to changes in the local 2D electrostatic potential.Comment: 4 pages, 3 JPG figures, Revtex. Consistency analysis of Kaluza-Klein geometric sigma models

    Get PDF
Geometric sigma models are purely geometric theories of scalar fields coupled to gravity. Geometrically, these scalars represent the very coordinates of space-time, and, as such, can be gauged away. A particular theory is built over a given metric field configuration which becomes the vacuum of the theory. Kaluza-Klein theories of the kind have been shown to be free of the classical cosmological constant problem, and to give massless gauge fields after dimensional reduction. In this paper, the consistency of dimensional reduction, as well as the stability of the internal excitations, are analyzed. Choosing the internal space in the form of a group manifold, one meets no inconsistencies in the dimensional reduction procedure. As an example, the SO(n) groups are analyzed, with the result that the mass matrix of the internal excitations necessarily possesses negative modes. In the case of coset spaces, the consistency of dimensional reduction rules out all but the stable mode, although the full vacuum stability remains an open problem.Comment: 13 pages, RevTe

Breaking Your Own Heart: A Qualitative Study of Grief After Initiating a Breakup

    Get PDF
This study explored how young adult initiators of romantic relationship dissolution experience grief and support through the breakup process. Participants were six female and three male undergraduate students at The University of Idaho, all of whom had initiated a breakup within the past six months. Initiators responded to a variety of questions about their experiences in a semi-structured interview. Based on a qualitative analysis of these interviews, a variety of themes emerged highlighting the often minimized experience of initiating a romantic relationship breakup in early adulthood. Additional analysis compared themes based on participant gender and age. Results suggest that initiators can and do experience grief after their breakups, that their grief is often disenfranchised, and that they value support from family and friends

Approaches to Estimating the Health State Dependence of the Utility Function

    Get PDF
If the marginal utility of consumption depends on health status, this will affect the economic analysis of a number of central problems in public finance, including the optimal structure of health insurance and optimal life cycle savings. In this paper, we describe the promises and challenges of various approaches to estimating the effect of health on the marginal utility of consumption. Our basic conclusion is that while none of these approaches is a panacea, many offer the potential to shed important insights on the nature of health state dependence.

The HETDEX Pilot Survey III: The Low Metallicities of High-Redshift Lyman Alpha Galaxies

We present Keck/NIRSPEC spectroscopic observations of three Lyman alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z ~ 2.3 discovered with the HETDEX pilot survey. We detect Halpha, [OIII], and Hbeta emission from two galaxies at z = 2.29 and 2.49, designated HPS194 and HPS256, respectively, representing the first detection of multiple rest-frame optical emission lines in galaxies at high-redshift selected on the basis of their Lyman alpha emission. The redshifts of the Lyman alpha emission from these galaxies are offset redward of the systemic redshifts by Delta_v = 162 +/- 37 (photometric) +/- 42 (systematic) km/s for HPS194, and Delta_v = 36 +/- 35 +/- 18 km/s for HPS256. An interpretation for HPS194 is that a large-scale outflow may be occurring in its interstellar medium. The emission line ratios imply that neither LAE hosts an active galactic nucleus. Using the upper limits on the [NII] emission we place meaningful constraints on the gas-phase metallicities in these two LAEs of Z < 0.17 and < 0.28 Zsol (1 sigma). Measuring the stellar masses of these objects via spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting (~ 10^10 and 6 x 10^8 Msol, respectively), we study the nature of LAEs in a mass-metallicity plane. At least one of these two LAEs appears to be more metal poor than continuum-selected star-forming galaxies at the same redshift and stellar mass, implying that objects exhibiting Lyman alpha emission may be systematically less chemically enriched than the general galaxy population. We use the SEDs of these two galaxies to show that neglecting the emission lines when fitting stellar population models to the observed photometry can result in overestimates of the population age by orders of magnitude, and the stellar mass by a factor of ~ 2. This effect is particularly important at z > 7, where similarly strong emission lines may masquerade in the photometry as a 4000 A break (abridged).Comment: Replaced with the accepted (to ApJ) versio

Interaction effects at the magnetic-field induced metal-insulator transition in Si/SiGe superlattices

A metal-insulator transition was induced by in-plane magnetic fields up to 27 T in homogeneously Sb-doped Si/SiGe superlattice structures. The localisation is not observed for perpendicular magnetic fields. A comparison with magnetoconductivity investigations in the weakly localised regime shows that the delocalising effect originates from the interaction-induced spin-triplet term in the particle-hole diffusion channel. It is expected that this term, possibly together with the singlet particle-particle contribution, is of general importance in disordered n-type Si bulk and heterostructures.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Solid State Communications, in prin
