The current demand for antioxidant active packaging, that is achieved by introducing antioxidants into food packaging material, is increasing due to both the unquestionable advantages compared to the addition of antioxidants directly to the food and the tendency to consume healthy and fresh products. When developing active packaging materials, research has been focused on natural and biodegradable polymers (such as polysaccharides like chitosan) containing polyphenol compounds (as bio preservative) in their formulation. Due to their rare solvation properties, the natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), are considered good solvents to be used as an extraction medium of bioactive products. Moreover, the search for the use of ecological solvents for this field has intensified due to their acceptable toxicity profile and chemical diversity. The use of these inexpensive, non-volatile, and nonaqueous biodegradable solvents, complying with the Green Chemistry principles, could potentially improve the stability of the polyphenolic compounds allowing to retard food spoilage for packaging material, Catechins (components of green tea (GT)), a polyphenolic group known for its high value-added antioxidant properties, have been associated with health-promoting effects. In this sense, the incorporation of GT components for food application purposes and as active ingredient in packaging materials can be expected to improve food functionality and availability, while performing a dual role (antioxidant and antimicrobial agent) and possibly also having low-cost advantages. In this work, for the first time, a ternary deep eutectic solvent (ChCl/glycerol/lactic acid) was used as an environmentally friendly media for the extraction of polyphenolic compounds from green tea. The extraction solution was compared with traditional method and used to improve chitosan film properties. The casting method used to produce films with and without GT/NADES plasticizer. Transparent films were obtained and evaluated in terms of mechanical, water resistance, optical and microstructural properties. The results were compared with those obtained for chitosan films containing binary deep eutectic solvents (ChCl/glycerol and ChCl/lactic acid, with and without GT)) as plasticizers in their formulations. The work was supported through the project UIDB/50006/2020, funded by FCT/MCTES through national funds and by the AgriFood XXI I&D&I project (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000041 co-financed by European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through the NORTE 2020. Increasing the resistance of common bean to white mold through recurrent selection

    Get PDF
White mold, caused by Sclerotinea sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary is one of the most important diseases of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) worldwide. Physiological resistance and traits related to disease avoidance such as architecture contribute to field resistance. The aim of this study was to verify the efficiency of recurrent selection in physiological resistance to white mold, “Carioca” grain type and upright habit in common bean. Thirteen common bean lines with partial resistance to white mold were intercrossed by means of a circulant diallel table, and seven recurrent selection cycles were obtained. Of these cycles, progenies of the S0:1, S0:2 and S0:3 generations of cycles III, IV, V and VI were evaluated. The best (8 to 10) progenies of the seven cycles were also evaluated, in two experiments, one in the greenhouse and one in the field. Lattice and/or randomized block experimental designs were used. The traits evaluated were: resistance to white mold by the straw test method, growth habit and grain type. The most resistant progenies were selected based on the average score of resistance to white mold. Subsequently, they were evaluated with regard to grain type and growth habit. Recurrent selection allowed for genetic progress of about 11 % per year for white mold resistance and about 15 % per year for the plant architecture. There was no gain among cycles for grain type. Progeny selection and recurrent selection were efficient for obtaining progenies with a high level of resistance to white mold with “Carioca” grain type and upright habit

This paper presents a diversied artifice of a Rover robot prototype in order to inspect abnormalities in air conditioning ducts and ventilation through an integrated rotating high-resolution camera system Eulerian Video Magnification is a  method capable of revealing temporal  variations of a body in videos that are impossible to see with the naked eye. Using this method, it is possible to visualize the flow of microorganisms present in the ducts, in which the images are R.W. transmitted in real time to the operator, allowing the cleaning with rotating brushes that adapt themselves  according to the  pipeline geometry, linked to the rover making the removal of impurities which are found on the walls, as well as the application of fungicides and bactericides, and finally the mechanism structure allows the manipulation of small objects held by a claw, which ensures greater operating flexibility compared to existing systems on the market. Due to weather problems being the main responsible for the considerable rise in temperature around the world, this has led man to seek ways by which people have comfort in both residential and industrial context. The most widely used alternative to soften or even solve this problem indoors has been the use of air conditioning systems. Despite the many advantages that these systems provide, there is great concern with the quality of air being supplied to the user according to the procedures and requirements of NBR 15848: 2010

Potent signaling agents stimulate and guide pulp tissue regeneration, especially in endodontic treatment of teeth with incomplete root formation. Objective: This study evaluated the bioactive properties of low concentrations of extracellular matrix proteins on human apical papilla cells (hAPCs). Methodology: Different concentrations (1, 5, and 10 µg/mL) of fibronectin (FN), laminin (LM), and type I collagen (COL) were applied to the bottom of non-treated wells of sterilized 96-well plates. Non-treated and pre-treated wells were used as negative (NC) and positive (PC) controls. After seeding the hAPCs (5×103 cells/well) on the different substrates, we assessed the following parameters: adhesion, proliferation, spreading, total collagen/type I collagen synthesis and gene expression (ITGA5, ITGAV, COL1A1, COL3A1) (ANOVA/Tukey; α=0.05). Results: We observed greater attachment potential for cells on the FN substrate, with the effect depending on concentration. Concentrations of 5 and 10 µg/mL of FN yielded the highest cell proliferation, spreading and collagen synthesis values with 10 µg/mL concentration increasing the ITGA5, ITGAV, and COL1A1 expression compared with PC. LM (5 and 10 µg/mL) showed higher bioactivity values than NC, but those were lower than PC, and COL showed no bioactivity at all. Conclusion: We conclude that FN at 10 µg/mL concentration exerted the most intense bioactive effects on hAPCs
