DergiPark: 378992tmsjAims: In this study it is aimed to evaluate the knowledge level of Trakya University Medical School Students about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and to see the effect of committee education system. Methods: A cross sectional survey was applied to Trakya University Medical School 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade students. Four-hundred and seven students responded a survey which contained 15 questions. Knowledge level of the students on STDs was described by number (percentage) and chi-square test which are descriptive statistics. Results: : 3rd and 4th grade medical students’ knowledge level was found significantly higher than the 1st and 2nd grade medical students’ (p=0,0001). It was found out that gender doesn’t have any effect on the knowledge level (for 1st and 2nd grades p=0,285, for 3rd and 4th grades p=0,134). Conclusion: It was seen that the lessons that are given in Trakya University Medical School with committee system partially increased the knowledge level on STD

The first case of haemorrhagic meningitis due to Bacillus anthracis in the European part of Turkey is reported here. B. anthracis, sensitive to penicillin, was isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid and blood cultures. Although appropriate therapy was administered, the patient died two days after hospitalization

Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is one of the tick-borne rickettsial infections caused by Rickettsia conorii. It is transmitted to humans by brown dog ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus). In this case report, a 16-years-old male patient who was diagnosed as MSF after an exposure to dog-tick in Bartin province (located at middle Black Sea region of Turkey) has been presented. His history revealed that, five days before admission to the hospital (on June, 2007) he had cleaned dog-ticks from his dog, and after 12 hours he found a stucked tick on his leg and he took it out right away with a tweezer. High fever, headache and generalized maculopapular rash including soles and palms and a black-colored lesion at the tick bite site developed three days later. In clinical examination, there was a black escar circled with a red-purple colored halo in front of the right tibia at the site of the tick bite showing high similarity to "tache noire" which was specific to MSF. Indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for Rickettsia yielded negative result in the serum sample collected on admission day, however, it was found positive at 1/512 titer in the serum sample collected 10 days after admission. The patient has recovered completely without any complication after 10 days of doxycycline therapy. The aim of this presentation is to point out that MSF should be considered for the differential diagnosis of a patient with a history of tick bite, fever, maculopapular rash, headache, myalgia, arthralgia and especially with black escar during summer months in our country where the incidence of tick-borne infections has been increasing since recent years

Subjects/methods: Nine types of nutritional status by the combination of weight-for-length (2 years) and length/height-for-age with three categories (2 SD) were described. Malnutrition was defined by WHO criteria. Univariate and multivariate regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for malnutrition. Results: In total, 824 IBD patients (498 Ulcerative colitis (UC); 289 Crohn’s Disease (CD); 37 Indeterminate Colitis (IC); 412 male; the median age 12.5 years) were eligible. The prevalence of eutrophy, wasting/thinness, stunting, overweight, tall stature, concurrent wasting/thinness and stunting, tall stature with overweight, tall stature with wasting/thinness, and short stature with overweight were 67.4%, 14.9%, 6.6%, 3.1%, 3.2%, 3.3%, 1.1%, 0.4%, and 0.1%, respectively. The prevalence of malnutrition was 32.7%, indicating a higher prevalence in CD (p 10 years), prepubertal stage, severe disease activity, perianal involvement, and high C reactive protein level were independently associated with malnutrition in pediatric IBD. Conclusion: We showed the frequency of nutritional impairment in PIBD. The percentage of overweight subjects was lower than the other studies. The age of onset, disease activity, CRP level, perianal involvement, and pubertal stage were associated with a higher risk for developing malnutrition. Our results also confirmed that CD patients are particularly vulnerable to nutritional impairment. Clinical trial number: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04457518
