Francisco Gomes Teixeira: o homem, o cientista, o pedagogo

Tese de doutoramento em Matemática, na especialidade de História da MatemáticaO objectivo desta tese é estudar a personalidade de Francisco Gomes Teixeira, sob três aspectos principais: o homem, o cientista e o pedagogo. O trabalho está dividido em três Partes. Na Primeira Parte, tentamos delinear o perfil de Gomes Teixeira, como aluno, como chefe de família, como cidadão, como político, como mestre, como prestigiado matemático internacional, como historiador. Também, aí, apresentamos os resultados da pesquisa, que incidiu sobre o Jornal de Sciencias Mathematicas e Astronomicas e sobre os Annaes Scientificos da Academia Polytechnica do Porto. Finalmente, nesta mesma Parte, damos, uma visão global das actividades científicas de Gomes Teixeira, como analista, geómetra e historiador. A Segunda Parte, refere alguns temas matemáticos do livro, bem conhecido, Curso de Analyse Infinitesimal – Calculo Differencial, de Francisco Gomes Teixeira, numa perspectiva científica, pedagógica e histórica. Apresentamos, também, nesta Segunda Parte, a análise de duas bases de dados, uma relativa ao Espólio, reunido por Gomes Teixeira, durante a sua carreira académica, e uma segunda base de dados relativa às referências bibliográficas, inseridas no Traité des courbes spéciales remarquables planes et gauches. Na Terceira Parte, apresentamos as conclusões da nossa pesquisa. O trabalho integra quatro anexos, a que chamámos anexos A, B, C e D, que ilustram e documentam muitas das nossas afirmações.The aim of this thesis is to study the personality of Francisco Gomes Teixeira as it emerged during our research, namely: the man, the scientist and the pedagogue. The work contains three Parts, each of them divided into several chapters. In the first part, we attempt a characterization of Gomes Teixeira’s profile: as a student, within his family life, as a citizen, as a politician, as a master, as a celebrated international mathematician and as a historian. In this part, we also present the results of our research about the Jornal de Sciencias Mathematicas e Astronomicas and about the Annaes Scientificos da Academia Polytechnica. Finally, in this part, we give a global view of the scientific activities of Gomes Teixeira, as an analyst, as a geometer and as a historian. The second part of this work refers to some mathematical subjects of Gomes Teixeira well known textbook Curso de Analyse Infinitesimal – Calculo Differencial, in a scientific, pedagogical and historical approach. In this part, we also include one database built from the scientific remains (Spolium) gathered by Gomes Teixeira during his academic career and a second database referring to the Traité des courbes spéciales remarquables planes et gauches. In the third part we present the conclusions of our research. The thesis integrates four annexes, which we named A, B, C and D. These annexes give some illustrations and some documentation for many of the statements we make in the thesis

Bereavement in older adults: individual challenge and contextual variables in different models

A perda por viuvez em idade avançada é, porventura, de entre vários acontecimentos do ciclo de vida, um dos mais normativos e, simultaneamente, dos menos investigados. Com o aumento da esperança de vida, a viuvez nos adultos idosos ocorre cada vez mais tarde no ciclo de vida, é um acontecimento expectável e parece haver vantagens em conceptualizá-lo como uma importante transição psico-social que implica a reconfiguração do significado da vida e dos seus propósitos. Neste artigo abordaremos alguns dos principais modelos do processo de luto e algumas variáveis individuais e contextuais que determinam reacções associadas à perda. Faremos uma particular focalização no modelo proposto por Stroebe e Schut bem como nas suas implicações teóricas e práticas.The loss of a spouse in old age is one of the most significant, but least investigated events in the life cycle. With increasing life expectancy, widowhood in older adults occurs increasingly later in the life cycle. It is an expectable event and may be advantageously conceptualized as a major psychosocial transition that involves the reconfiguration of the meaning of life and its purpose. The present article discusses some of the main models of the grieving process and the effect of some individual and contextual variables on reactions regarding the loss of a spouse. It focuses mainly on Stroebe and Schut dual process model as well as on its theoretical and practical implications

Fuentes y Reacciones al Estrés en Abogados Brasileños

Job stress can negatively affect the health of employees. As such, the investigation of its characteristics in different professional categories is relevant. The aim in this study was to analyze the predictive power of seven stressors (decision latitude, psychological demands at work, physical demands at work, social support from colleagues, ergonomic stressors, relationships with clients, job insecurity) for job dissatisfaction, depression and psychosomatic problems in a sample of 702 Brazilian lawyers. The data were collected using a Brazilian version of the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ). The results showed that decision latitude and social support were the main negative predictors of stress, while psychological demands and job insecurity were its main positive predictors. These results are discussed in the light of the demand-support-control model, which was used as a framework for the research.El estrés laboral puede afectar negativamente la salud del trabajador y, por esto, es relevante investigar sus principales propiedades en diferentes categorías laborales. El objetivo del estudio fue analizar el poder predictivo de siete fuentes de estrés (latitud de la decisión, demandas psicológicas del trabajo, demandas físicas del trabajo, soporte social de colegas, motivos ergonómicos de estrés, relacionamiento con clientes e inseguridad en el trabajo) en la insatisfacción en el trabajo, en la depresión y en problemas psicosomáticos en una muestra de 702 abogados brasileños. La recolecta de dados fue mediante el Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ). Los resultados indicaron que la latitud de la decisión y el soporte social fueran los principales predictores negativos del estrés, mientras que las demandas psicológicas y la inseguridad en el trabajo fueran sus principales predictores positivos. Tales resultados son discutidos a partir del modelo de teórico de demandas-soporte-control que fundamentó la investigación.O estresse ocupacional pode afetar negativamente a saúde do trabalhador, o que torna relevante a investigação de suas características em diferentes categorias profissionais. O presente estudo teve por objetivo analisar o poder preditivo de sete fontes de estresse (latitude de decisão, demandas psicológicas do trabalho, demandas físicas do trabalho, suporte social de colegas, estressores ergonômicos, relacionamento com clientes e insegurança no trabalho) na insatisfação no trabalho, na depressão e em problemas psicossomáticos, em uma amostra de 702 advogados brasileiros. A coleta de dados efetivou-se por meio de uma versão adaptada do Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ). Os resultados obtidos revelaram que a latitude de decisão e o suporte social constituíram-se nos principais preditores negativos do estresse, enquanto as demandas psicológicas e a insegurança no trabalho foram os seus principais preditores positivos.Tais resultados são discutidos a partir do modelo teórico de demanda-suporte-controle, que fundamentou a pesquisa

Utilisation de l'information comptable dans le processus de prise de décision de l'entreprise

Cet article vise a montrer à partir de dix-sept interviews de dirigeants de plusieurs grandes entreprises industrielles portugaises que l'information comptable est plus utilisée dans certaines étapes du processus de décision que dans d autres. Deux perspectives différentes au niveau de la perception personnelle des dirigeants du lien entre l'étape du processus décisionnel et l'utilisation d'information connétable sont identifiées. Les résultats indiquent aussi que les dirigeant portugais ont besoin d information comptable dans la majorité des décisions de gestion sans grandes différences entre les décisions stratégiques et opérationnelles.Comptabilité de Gestion; Processus de Prise de décision; contrôle de gestion

The impact of pay dispersion on organizational performance

Although there are many theories and several studies aiming to explain the impact of pay dispersion on firm performance, the existence and direction of this relationship, as well as what factors moderate it, remains unclear. Using the PRISMA methodology, the present study performed a systematic literature review and gathered a sample of 26 papers on the topic to understand how pay dispersion is defined and conceptualized, if a relationship between pay dispersion and firm performance exists and if the impact of the first on the latter is positive or negative, to gather and study the existing theories that connect pay dispersion and organizational performance and understand which ones explain the found impacts, to verify if there are any variables that moderate this relationship and, if so, which ones. The present study has found that although studies on vertical pay dispersion mainly find a positive impact, confirming tournament arguments, and studies on horizontal dispersion find a negative one, confirming equity/fairness arguments, the existence of a relationship, its direction and intensity seems to depend on several contextual factors, pointing towards a contingency perspective.Embora existam muitas teorias e vários estudos com o objetivo de explicar o impacto da dispersão salarial no desempenho organizacional, a existência e a direção dessa relação, bem como que fatores o moderam, permanecem incertas. Utilizando a metodologia PRISMA, o presente estudo executou uma revisão sistemática de literatura e reuniu uma amostra de 26 artigos sobre o tema de forma a compreender de que forma a dispersão salarial é definida e concetualizada, se existe uma relação entre a dispersão salarial e o desempenho da empresa e se o impacto da primeira no último é positivo ou negativo, reunir e estudar as teorias existentes que conectam a dispersão salarial e o desempenho organizacional e entender quais explicam os impactos encontrados, verificar se existem variáveis que moderem esse relacionamento e, em caso afirmativo, quais. Este estudo constatou que, embora os estudos sobre dispersão vertical de salários encontrem principalmente um impacto positivo, confirmando os argumentos da teoria dos torneios, e os estudos sobre dispersão horizontal encontrem um impacto negativo, confirmando argumentos de equidade/justiça, a existência de um relacionamento, a sua direção, e intensidade parecem depender de vários fatores contextuais, apontando para uma perspetiva de contingência

Tourism and third sector organisations: synergies for responsible tourism development?

The main aim of this paper is the analysis of the third sector arts, culture and local development organisations (TSO) participation in the context of tourism planning and development and to understand the characteristics of its connections to the tourism sector in the region of the Algarve. The methodological strategy is anchored in a mix-methods approach applying qualitative techniques such as semi structured interviews (n=40), document analysis, non-participant observation, and adopting a triangulation approach. There have been few empirical studies that analyse this theme, thus, identifying the forms of participation that the third sector can adopt and their characteristics constitutes one of the main contributions of this research towards reinforcing the conceptual framework in the context of responsible tourism development. The results revealed that third sector organisations display a set of characteristics that position them as active agents in the tourist planning and development processes by operating on areas such as the promotion of cultural expression, research and inventory of cultural and natural resources, raising awareness of those resources and also by actively participating in supply structuring of tourist services.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
