Visually Grounded Meaning Representations

In this paper we address the problem of grounding distributional representations of lexical meaning. We introduce a new model which uses stacked autoencoders to learn higher-level representations from textual and visual input. The visual modality is encoded via vectors of attributes obtained automatically from images. We create a new large-scale taxonomy of 600 visual attributes representing more than 500 concepts and 700K images. We use this dataset to train attribute classifiers and integrate their predictions with text-based distributional models of word meaning. We evaluate our model on its ability to simulate word similarity judgments and concept categorization. On both tasks, our model yields a better fit to behavioral data compared to baselines and related models which either rely on a single modality or do not make use of attribute-based input

Models of Semantic Representation with Visual Attributes

We consider the problem of grounding the meaning of words in the physical world and focus on the visual modality which we represent by visual attributes. We create a new large-scale taxonomy of visual attributes covering more than 500 concepts and their corresponding 688K images. We use this dataset to train attribute classifiers and integrate their predictions with text-based distributional models of word meaning. We show that these bimodal models give a better fit to human word association data compared to amodal models and word representations based on handcrafted norming data.

Training school teachers to the use of ICT – a preliminary study on motivation and attitude to innovation

[EN] As part of an innovation project for the public schools of an Italian municipality, the whole body of teachers was enrolled in a training course on the use of ICT in didactic. Before the training, data on ICT expertise, attitude towards teaching and attitude towards training on the use of ICT were collected, to identify factors facilitating and preventing a successful exit of the training, in order to better customize it. A total of 456 questionnaires were analyzed. The interviewed showed an average level of ICT competence, but relevant gaps on some useful teaching tool. Teachers expressed a good inclination towards the more creative aspects of their profession, an element evaluated as congruent with the adoption of more student-centered pedagogical practice, but conflicting attitudes were expressed on the whole idea of entering a training process. Results suggest that an effective training program needs to address the change of pedagogical approach adopted from the teachers, the use of online communication tools and spaces as well as educational apps and tool and the reinforcement of a virtuous circle of feedback reception from the students that contribute to motivate the teachers actively involved in the process of changeMura, G.; Ferrari, M.; Diamantini, D. Orientações de metodologia de pesquisa digital para o estudante de medicina obter adequado estudo de diretrizes nacionais de medicina / Digital research methodology guidance for medical students in obtaining adequate study within the national medicine guidelines

É fato que a sociedade sofre modificações ao longo dos anos, logo, no âmbito da medicina não seria diferente, e para acompanhar esse processo é fundamental a utilização de uma metodologia eficaz que transmita o conhecimento desejado. Neste contexto, estão inseridos diferentes mecanismos de busca e pesquisa que tem por finalidade gerar esse conhecimento de forma completa e confiável, minimizando possíveis erros. Desta maneira, este estudo visou desenvolver um raciocínio crítico a partir dos resultados encontrados nos mecanismos de busca como Google, Google Acadêmico, Scielo e Diretrizes Médicas, estabelecendo uma análise de como pesquisas simples sem os adequados processos de busca acabam por se tornar inviáveis para o estudante e profissional da área médica. Além disso, com os novos modelos pedagógicos na medicina, a busca pelo desenvolvimento da autonomia na educação deve ser pautada na estratégia da ação-reflexão-ação, logo, este estudo procurou também ressaltar os impactos que um corpo docente preparado acarreta na vida acadêmica do estudante de medicina, levando à uma formação médica eficaz e baseada em evidência. Sociologia dei contesti di apprendimento

Questo volume vuole discutere il tema dell’educazione continua dal punto di vista della sua costruzione sociale e del ruolo che riveste all’interno della società nella realtà italiana ed europea. I luoghi cardine all’interno dei quali si sviluppa l’analisi, sia teorica che rivolta alle condizioni concrete di attuazione, sono: la scuola, i musei e la formazione nel mondo del lavoro. Assistiamo oggi a un ampio dibattito sul tema dell’educazione che incorpora analisi, questioni interpretative e approcci teorici assai differenti, volti ad offrire una lettura della complessità nella quale viviamo e delle possibili risposte alle esigenze di formazione in continuo aumento per complessità e portata. Passando in rassegna i diversi orientamenti teorici, la riflessione si focalizza sui costrutti sociali di identità, inclusione, appartenenza e provenienza geografica e al loro impatto sull’apprendimento formale e non formale. Il quadro di riferimento, entro cui si inserisce l’esplorazione dell’apprendimento continuo, considera, inoltre, la questione delle education policy, evidenziando problematicità e conquiste della governance italiana nei diversi contesti della conoscenza. L’analisi sulla dimensione non formale e formale dell’apprendimento, che attraversa tutto il volume, lo rende uno strumento versatile per lo studio dei nuovi ambienti di apprendimento, nella speranza di poter alimentare ulteriori spunti di riflessione
