"Let the memories begin". The family photo album and contemporary Spanish autobiography

    Get PDF
This article explores the interactions between photography and self-writing in contemporary Spanish autobiography. Through the analysis of autobiographies by Carmen Martín Gaite and Paloma Díaz-Mas, the presence of the family album is revealed as a structural device and as an essential constituent of a dialogue between image and word that transcends the boundaries of Spanish autobiographical writing towards the constitution of experimental hybrid texts, or «imagetext», according to the concept created by W. J. T. Mitchell.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

Phase Change Material Heat Accumulator for the HEXAFLY-INT Hypersonic glider

    Get PDF
International audienceFrom the launchers to the spacecrafts, various on-board systems have to be maintained within specified temperature limits. Phase Change Materials (PCM) offer the possibility to store thermal energy directly as latent heat of fusion. Among the advantages of a PCM device are the stability of temperature control, the absence of moving parts and a reduced mass. The HEXAFLY-INTERNATIONAL project aims to flight test an experimental vehicle above Mach 7 to verify its potential for a high aerodynamic efficiency during a free-flight. European Major Resarch Centers and Industries are collaborating on this challenge. The presented activity focus on the use of a Phase Change Material device already developed under ESA projects up to TRL 6. Two efficient heat accumulators using PCM will allow avoiding overheating of electronic units such as telemetry & telecommand receivers, transmitters and data acquisition units for the hypersonic flight. The paper presents the complete cycle of design and environmental testing for the two PCM Heat Accumulators selected for the flight. The conclusions will show the benefit of adopting a Phase Change Material Heat Accumulator

Study of resting state cortico-cortical synchronization aimed to accurately discriminate Parkinson and essential tremor patients: A MEG source-space connectivity study

Motor tremor-related syndromes like essential tremor (ET) and Parkinson's disease (PD) have a common symptomatology in early stages: the presence of tremor. Even when both diseases have a different aetiology and, thus, different prognosis and treatment, the symptoms in early stages are quite similar. This usually leads to misdiagnosis, with the associated risks and limitations. A PD patient with an ET treatment will continue developing the disease, loosing an important window of action. On the other hand, an ET patient with a PD treatment will suffer strong side effects. A correct diagnosis is in both cases mandatory for the well-being of the patients. In this experiment we tried to find a biomarker based in magneto-physiological data that allows clinicians a faster and easier diagnosis of ET and PD patients, saving time and money to both patients and hospitals

Unanchored K48-Linked Polyubiquitin Synthesized by the E3-Ubiquitin Ligase TRIM6 Stimulates the Interferon-IKKε Kinase-Mediated Antiviral Response.

Type I interferons (IFN-I) are essential antiviral cytokines produced upon microbial infection. IFN-I elicits this activity through the upregulation of hundreds of IFN-I-stimulated genes (ISGs). The full breadth of ISG induction demands activation of a number of cellular factors including the IκB kinase epsilon (IKKε). However, the mechanism of IKKε activation upon IFN receptor signaling has remained elusive. Here we show that TRIM6, a member of the E3-ubiquitin ligase tripartite motif (TRIM) family of proteins, interacted with IKKε and promoted induction of IKKε-dependent ISGs. TRIM6 and the E2-ubiquitin conjugase UbE2K cooperated in the synthesis of unanchored K48-linked polyubiquitin chains, which activated IKKε for subsequent STAT1 phosphorylation. Our work attributes a previously unrecognized activating role of K48-linked unanchored polyubiquitin chains in kinase activation and identifies the UbE2K-TRIM6-ubiquitin axis as critical for IFN signaling and antiviral response

Association of Candidate Gene Polymorphisms With Chronic Kidney Disease: Results of a Case-Control Analysis in the Nefrona Cohort

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major risk factor for end-stage renal disease, cardiovascular disease and premature death. Despite classical clinical risk factors for CKD and some genetic risk factors have been identified, the residual risk observed in prediction models is still high. Therefore, new risk factors need to be identified in order to better predict the risk of CKD in the population. Here, we analyzed the genetic association of 79 SNPs of proteins associated with mineral metabolism disturbances with CKD in a cohort that includes 2, 445 CKD cases and 559 controls. Genotyping was performed with matrix assisted laser desorption ionizationtime of flight mass spectrometry. We used logistic regression models considering different genetic inheritance models to assess the association of the SNPs with the prevalence of CKD, adjusting for known risk factors. Eight SNPs (rs1126616, rs35068180, rs2238135, rs1800247, rs385564, rs4236, rs2248359, and rs1564858) were associated with CKD even after adjusting by sex, age and race. A model containing five of these SNPs (rs1126616, rs35068180, rs1800247, rs4236, and rs2248359), diabetes and hypertension showed better performance than models considering only clinical risk factors, significantly increasing the area under the curve of the model without polymorphisms. Furthermore, one of the SNPs (the rs2248359) showed an interaction with hypertension, being the risk genotype affecting only hypertensive patients. We conclude that 5 SNPs related to proteins implicated in mineral metabolism disturbances (Osteopontin, osteocalcin, matrix gla protein, matrix metalloprotease 3 and 24 hydroxylase) are associated to an increased risk of suffering CKD

Patient preferences and treatment safety for uncomplicated vulvovaginal candidiasis in primary health care

Abstract

Background

Vaginitis is a common complaint in primary care. In uncomplicated candidal vaginitis, there are no differences in effectiveness between oral or vaginal treatment. Some studies describe that the preferred treatment is the oral one, but a Cochrane's review points out inconsistencies associated with the report of the preferred way that limit the use of such data. Risk factors associated with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis still remain controversial.

Methods/Design

This work describes a protocol of a multicentric prospective observational study with one year follow up, to describe the women's reasons and preferences to choose the way of administration (oral vs topical) in the treatment of not complicated candidal vaginitis. The number of women required is 765, they are chosen by consecutive sampling. All of whom are aged 16 and over with vaginal discharge and/or vaginal pruritus, diagnosed with not complicated vulvovaginitis in Primary Care in Madrid.

The main outcome variable is the preferences of the patients in treatment choice; secondary outcome variables are time to symptoms relief and adverse reactions and the frequency of recurrent vulvovaginitis and the risk factors. In the statistical analysis, for the main objective will be descriptive for each of the variables, bivariant analysis and multivariate analysis (logistic regression).. The dependent variable being the type of treatment chosen (oral or topical) and the independent, the variables that after bivariant analysis, have been associated to the treatment preference.

Discussion

Clinical decisions, recommendations, and practice guidelines must not only attend to the best available evidence, but also to the values and preferences of the informed patient.</p
