We present research on the use of new technologies by teacher trainees (N = 158) whose average age is 22 and who are studying at “Cardenal Spínola” Teacher Training College (attached to the University of Seville). We investigate their perception, as future teachers, about the didactic potential of ICT. As an instrument to collect data, we have used a questionnaire which includes some items in which they have to indicate the possible use of certain resources and others, of the Likert type, in which they must show their degree of agreement with some affirmations. The results indicate that students maintain a general favorable attitude towards Information Technology, they are regular users, confident and show a positive view, a little idealized, and somewhat distant from what could be established as a critical model, and very much the same as certain lines of thinking in the field of educational technology in the 80s and 90s. This view, however, is not reflected in their activities on didactic programing, demonstrating disagreement between personal use of information technology and beliefs about its value in education, on the one hand, and its pedagogical practice in training on the other. The paper ends with a proposal of guidelines for the present subjects on the degree course

The Level of NMDA Receptor in the Membrane Modulates Amyloid-β Association and Perforation

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects mostly the elderly. The main histopathological markers are the senile plaques formed by amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) aggregates that can perforate the plasma membrane of cells, increasing the intracellular calcium levels and releasing synaptic vesicles that finally lead to a delayed synaptic failure. Several membrane proteins and lipids interact with Aβ affecting its toxicity in neurons. Here, we focus on NMDA receptors (NMDARs) as proteins that could be modulating the association and neurotoxic perforation induced by Aβ on the plasma membrane. In fact, our results showed that decreasing NMDARs, using enzymatic or siRNA approaches, increased the association of Aβ to the neurons. Furthermore, overexpression of NMDARs also resulted in an enhanced association between NMDA and Aβ. Functionally, the reduction in membrane NMDARs augmented the process of membrane perforation. On the other hand, overexpressing NMDARs had a protective effect because Aβ was now unable to cause membrane perforation, suggesting a complex relationship between Aβ and NMDARs. Because previous studies have recognized that Aβ oligomers are able to increase membrane permeability and produce amyloid pores, the present study supports the conclusion that NMDARs play a critical protective role on Aβ actions in hippocampal neurons. These results could explain the lack of correlation between brain Aβ burden and clinically observed dementia

This project is intended to create a typographic corporate visual identity for the University of The Basque Country, UPV/EHU. The conceptual starting-point is the need to provide the UPV/EHU with a set of corporate visual identity characteristics using a meaningful font style, and the approach has been provided by Eduardo Chillida’s aesthetic reflections on the nature of form. Chillida’s graphic production shows a subtle coincidence with vital principles for typographic creation, in terms of the approach to dynamic and constructive forms, in which geometric rigour is overcome by a kind of organic-ness that arises from the very heart of the structure—“cursus”; by a vital force that imprints the modulated action of the gesture—“ductus”; by the dialectic between what is full and what is empty—form/counter-form; by impulse and spontaneity—character; and by the affirmation of a visual language in the particular culture of the medium in which one is living—identity.Universidad del País Vasco/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea —UPV/EHU-PES 11/31—, a través de su programa de investigación estratégica

Approximation of integration maps of vector measures and limit representations of Banach function spaces

[EN] We study whether or not the integration maps of vector measures can be computed as pointwise limits of their finite rank Radon¿Nikodým derivatives. The positive cases are obtained by using the circle of ideas related to the approximation property for Banach spaces. The negative ones are given by means of an appropriate use of the Daugavet property. As an application, we analyse when the norm in a space L 1 (m) of integrable functions can be computed as a limit of the norms of the spaces of integrable functions with respect to the Radon¿Nikodým derivatives of m.E. The chemistry involved in the third explosion limit of H₂–O₂ mixtures

    Get PDF
The third explosion limit of hydrogen oxidation in closed vessels has always been thought to be the result of the competition between homogeneous gas-phase reactions and diffusion of hydroperoxyl radicals to the walls, where they are destroyed. It has recently been observed that this species actually follows a chemical-kinetic steady state in this regime, with the consequence that its diffusive rate toward the catalytic walls becomes irrelevant. Here we show that the critical explosion conditions are determined instead by the fate of hydrogen peroxide, which emerges as the controlling reactant for the resulting gas-phase chemistry. A simple, accurate analytic expression for the third explosion limit follows from identification of the critical conditions for existence of weakly reactive, diffusion&-reaction solutions, thereby providing the answer to a long-standing problem that in early work was characterized as being hopelessly difficult. This work was supported by the US AFOSR Grant # FA9550-12-1-0138, by the Comunidad de Madrid through Project #P2009/ENE-1597, and by the Spanish MCINN through Project #CSD2010-00011

Aromatics from Lignin through Ultrafast Reactions in Water

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaNowadays, the valorization of lignin, the major natural source of aromatics in earth, is being a challenge for the scientific community. In this study, kraft lignin is effectively converted into aromatic monomers by ultrafast depolymerization in hot and pressurized water. At reaction times below 500 ms, it is possible to avoid char formation originated from undesirable condensation reactions by controlling accurately the reaction time. Under alkaline medium, the reaction reaches an optimum point at 386ºC and 300 ms with a light oil yield of 60% with a concentration in key compounds such as guaiacol, creosol, vanillin and acetovanillone of around 20 %w/w. The char formation in this point was surprisingly low (4 %w/w). Analysis and quantification of the products allows to identify the evolution of the different reaction steps and propose plausible mechanism for the depolymerization and repolymerization stages. Furthermore, it is proven that the proposed technology is equally effective to treat directly industrial black liquors with a yield higher than 50% to light oil, containing as main monomers guaiacol (2.7%), syringol (3.0%) and syringaldehyde (7.3%).2020-02-152020-02-15Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Project CTQ2016-79777-R)Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte (Proyect FPU15/00409

Predictive model of explosive detonation parameters from an equation of state based on detonation velocity

    Get PDF
This article describes a predictive model of explosive detonation velocity and pressure based on first-order approximation of the detonation velocity equation. Detonation pressure was calculated from equations derived from the ideal detonation theory since that pressure is functionally related to detonation velocity. In the model calibration process, several product formation hierarchies were explored, with the best results yielded by the Kamlet and Jacobs (KJ) hierarchy. The predictive capacity of our model (labelled DEoS) was tested using different experimental databases, and was compared with predictions by thermochemical models (BKW-RR, JCZ3-J and JCZS) and by the empirical KJ method. The prediction values obtained using an experimental database of 238 explosive substances (75 singles and 163 composites), for a range of densities (1 g cc −1 to 2 g cc −1 ), were excellent in terms of both velocity and pressure, with root mean square error values of 1.7% (519 data items) and 6.0% (263 data items), respectively. We analysed results, broken down by explosive type, in detail, finding that the model residuals did not correlate with the predictor variables and also that the model predicts reasonable values for other parameters in the detonation state, such as density, the Jones parameter, and the Grüneisen parameter.Xunta de Galicia | Ref.
