    New Fertilizer Strategies Combining Manure and Urea for Improved Rice Growth in Mozambique

    The cost of chemical fertilizers is increasing and becoming unaffordable for smallholders in Africa. The present study aimed to assess the impact of combined fertilization strategies using urea and animal manure (beef cattle manure and poultry litter manure) on rice yield and nutrient uptake. For this, a field experiment was carried out on a loam sandy soil in the Chókwè Irrigation Scheme. We set seven treatments in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), namely: T0: no fertilizer, T1: 100% urea, T2: 100% beef cattle manure, T3: 100% poultry litter, T4: 50% urea + 50% beef cattle manure, T5: 50% urea + 50% poultry litter and T6: 40% urea + 30% beef cattle manure + 30% poultry litter, replicated four times each. All treatments, except T0, received an amount of nitrogen (N) equivalent to 100 kgN ha1. Results revealed that the highest yield grain (425 g m2), plant height (115 cm), number of tillers (18) and thousand-grain weight (34g) were observed in treatments combining urea with manure (T4, T5 and T6) indicating that N supply in the mixture (urea + manure) is more efficient than in isolated applications of N (T1, T2 and T3).     Enhanced stress response in rats that suffered acute neuroinflammation induced by neuraminidase three months before

    Microglial cells are protagonists in neuroinflammatory processes and their activation is a notorious feature of such events. In acute inflammation, microglial cells return to their basal surveillant state in few days. However, sometimes they evolve towards a primed state, characterized by hypersensitivity to new stimuli and an exacerbated response which may jeopardize brain functions. Because the hypothalamus is a pivotal hub for neuroendocrine and autonomic functions, we have been exploring evidences of microglial priming in this region and its consequences. We used a model of acute ventricular neuroinflammation consisting in the intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of neuraminidase (NA). This enzyme is found in the cover of neurotropic bacteria and viruses, e.g. influenza, mumps or measles viruses, thus mimicking a brain infection. Three months after inducing neuroinflammation with NA to rats, an acute stressor was applied to investigate the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the stress response elicited, as well as the inflammatory activation of hypothalamic microglial cells. The acute stressor was forced swimming for 6 minutes. Afterwards, blood samples were retrieved to determine corticosterone levels by ELISA, and the brains extracted to analyze microglial cells in histological sections by immunohistochemistry with IBA1 and inflammatory markers by qPCR. Stressed rats previously injected with NA had increased levels of corticosterone compared with control rats that were equally stressed but had been ICV injected with saline. Also, qPCR studies in hypothalamic tissue revealed that NA treated rats presented an increased expression of the genes for the inflammasome protein NLR family pyring domain containing 3 (NLRP3) and the microglial marker IBA1.     Neuraminidase-induced neuroinflammation causes anxiety and microgliosis in the amygdala

    An intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of neuraminidase (NA) within the lateral ventricles originates an acute event of neuroinflammation, which is solved to a great extent after two weeks. Recently, neurological problems or behavioral alterations have been associated with neuroinflammation. Although the majority of them fade along with inflammation resolution, the possibility of long-term sequelae should be taken into consideration. Thus, we aimed to explore if NA-induced neuroinflammation provokes behavioral or neurological disturbances at medium (2 weeks) and long (10 weeks) term. Initially, rats were ICV injected with NA or saline. Two or 10 weeks later they were made to perform a series of neurological tests and behavioral evaluations (open field test). The neuroinflammation status of the brain was studied by immunohistochemistry and qPCR. While no neurological alterations were found, the open field test revealed an increased anxiety state 2 weeks after NA administration, which was not observed after 10 weeks. In accordance with this behavioral findings, an overexpression of the molecular pattern receptor TLR4 was revealed by qPCR in hypothalamic tissue in NA treated animals after 2 weeks of ICV, but not after 10 weeks. Moreover, histological studies showed a microgliosis in the amygdala of NA injected rats 2 weeks post-ICV, as well as a slightly activated state evidenced by morphometric parameters of these cells. These histological findings were not present 10 weeks after the ICV injection. These results suggest that NA-induced neuroinflammation might cause anxiety, with no neurological manifestations, in the medium term, along with a mild microglial activation in amygdala.     Bisphenol-A exposure and risk of breast and prostate cancer in the Spanish European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study

    Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor that it is present in numerous products of daily use. The aim of this study was to assess the potential association of serum BPA concentrations and the risk of incident breast and prostate cancer in a sub-cohort of the Spanish European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Methods: We designed a case-cohort study within the EPIC-Spain cohort. Study population consisted on 4812 participants from 4 EPIC-Spain centers (547 breast cancer cases, 575 prostate cancer cases and 3690 sub-cohort participants). BPA exposure was assessed by means of chemical analyses of serum samples collected at recruitment. Borgan II weighted Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios. Results: Median follow-up time in our study was 16.9 years. BPA geometric mean serum values of cases and sub-cohort were 1.12 ng/ml vs 1.10 ng/ml respectively for breast cancer and 1.33 ng/ml vs 1.29 ng/ml respectively for prostate cancer. When categorizing BPA into tertiles, a 40% increase in risk of prostate cancer for tertile 1 (p = 0.022), 37% increase for tertile 2 (p = 0.034) and 31% increase for tertile 3 (p = 0.072) was observed with respect to values bellow the limit of detection. No significant association was observed between BPA levels and breast cancer risk. Conclusions: We found a similar percentage of detection of BPA among cases and sub-cohort from our population, and no association with breast cancer risk was observed. However, we found a higher risk of prostate cancer for the increase in serum BPA levels. Further investigation is needed to understand the influence of BPA in prostate cancer risk

    Anticoagulation Control with Acenocoumarol or Warfarin in Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation in Primary Care (Fantas-TIC Study)

    Introduction: The use of vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) is complicated due to the narrow therapeutic margin they present and their unpredictable dose-response relationship. Most studies are based on warfarin, with the results being extrapolated to acenocoumarol. However, studies comparing the two treatments in terms of the degree of anticoagulation control are scarce, justifying the present study. Main factors associated with poor control of time in therapeutic range (TTR) of anticoagulated patients are also studied. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with real-world data from patients treated in primary care (PC). Data were obtained from the System for the Improvement of Research in PC (SIDIAP) database, covering 60,978 NVAF-anticoagulated patients from 287 PC centres in 2018. Descriptive statistics were derived, and odds ratios were estimated by multivariate logistic regression. Results: 41,430 patients were considered: 93% were being treated with acenocoumarol and 7% with warfarin. There was no difference in poor control of TTR between the two types of VKA treatment, acenocoumarol and warfarin (38.9 vs. 38.4; p = 0.610). Poor anticoagulation control was mainly associated with advanced alcoholism (OR = 1.38), liver failure (OR = 1.37) and intracranial haemorrhage (OR = 1.35) as well as female sex, age < 60 years, cardiovascular history, diabetes mellitus and other variables. Conclusions: There is no association between poor anticoagulation control and the type of VKA treatment administered. Factors associated with poor control of TTR must be considered in clinical practice to improve control and decision-making

    A desnutrición é un problema coñecido nos pacientes hospitalizados, especialmente nos pacientes críticos. A prevalencia no paciente hospitalizado oscila entre un 30 e un 60% e é máis elevada no paciente grave debido á alteración no metabolismo dos diferentes substratos e ao déficit de nutrintes. Obxectivo: diminuír a variabilidade na valoración do risco de malnutrición e optimizar a terapia nutricional especializada (TNE) nos pacientes críticos hospitalizados no Servizo Galego de Saúde, realizando unha valoración do risco de malnutrición e un tratamento homoxéneo dos pacientes críticos con risco en todos os hospitais do Sistema Sanitario Público de Saúde de Galicia.La desnutrición es un problema conocido en los pacientes hospitalizados, especialmente en los pacientes críticos. La prevalencia en el paciente hospitalizado oscila entre un 30 y un 60%, siendo más elevada en el paciente grave, debido a la alteración en el metabolismo de los diferentes sustratos y al déficit de nutrientes.     Oral Anticoagulant Adequacy in Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation in Primary Care: A Cross-Sectional Study Using Real-World Data (Fantas-TIC Study)

    Background: Oral anticoagulants (OAs) are the treatment to prevent stroke in atrial fibrillation (AF). Anticoagulant treatment choice in non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) must be individualized, taking current guidelines into account. Adequacy of anticoagulant therapy under the current criteria for NVAF in real-world primary care is presented. Methods: Cross-sectional study, with real-world data from patients treated in primary care (PC). Data were obtained from the System for the Improvement of Research in Primary Care (SIDIAP) database, covering 60,978 NVAF-anticoagulated patients from 287 PC centers in 2018. Results: In total, 41,430 (68%) were treated with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) and 19,548 (32%) NVAF with direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs). Inadequate prescription was estimated to be 36.0% and 67.6%, respectively. Most DOAC inadequacy (77.3%) was due to it being prescribed as a first-line anticoagulant when there was no history of thromboembolic events or intracranial hemorrhage (ICH). A total of 22.1% had missing estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values. Common causes of inadequate VKA prescription were poor control of time in therapeutic range (TTR) (98.8%) and ICH (2.2%). Conclusions: Poor adequacy to current criteria was observed, being inadequacy higher in DOACs than in VKAs. TTR and GFR should be routinely calculated in electronic health records (EHR) to facilitate decision-making and patient safety
