determine if their differences in physicochemical characteristics and tenderization pattern during maturation (3 to 21 days) had an effect on the consumer evaluation of beef palatability. Biotype affected significantly pH, water holding capacity, chemical composition (Pb0.001) and meat lightness (Pb0.05). Ageing time affected significantly (Pb0.05) colour, meat toughness and sensory attributes in a different way within each biotype. Multivariate analysis showed two different meat groups: 1) meat from mh-genotypes, characterized by high juice losses, lightness (L*), protein content and high sensory acceptability at intermediate (7 and 14 days) ageing times; 2) meat from rustic (AM) breed and biotypes free of myostatin mutation (AV (+/+) and AV×AM), showing higher intramuscular fat, myoglobin content, and instrumental toughness and requiring longer storage times (21 days). This should be taken into account for the proper post-mortem management and commercialization of each product to achieve its best sensory quality

The collimated outflows of the planetary nebula Hu1-2: proper motion and radial velocity measurements

Hu\,1-2 is a planetary nebula that contains an isolated knot located northwestern of the main nebula, which could be related to a collimated outflow. We present a subsarcsecond Hα\alpha+[N\,{\sc ii}] image and a high-resolution, long-slit spectrum of Hu\,1-2 that allow us to identify the southeastern counterpart of the northwestern knot and to establish their high velocity (>> 340 km\,s1^{-1}), collimated bipolar outflow nature. The detection of the northwestern knot in POSS red plates allows us to carry out a proper motion analysis by combining three POSS red plates and two narrow-band Hα\alpha+[N\,{\sc ii}] CCD images, with a time baseline of \simeq 57 yr. A proper motion of 20 ±\pm 6\,mas\,yr1^{-1} along position angle 312^{\circ} ±\pm 15^{\circ}, and a dynamical age of 1375+590^{+590}\llap{320_{-320}}\,yr are obtained for the bipolar outflow. The measured proper motion and the spatio-kinematical properties of the bipolar outflow yield a lower limit of 2.7\,kpc for the distance to Hu\,1-2.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in MNRA

Global Carleman inequalities for parabolic systems and applications to controllability

    Get PDF
This paper has been conceived as an overview on the controllability properties of some relevant (linear and nonlinear) parabolic systems. Specifically, we deal with the null controllability and the exact controllability to the trajectories. We try to explain the role played by the observability inequalities in this context and the need of global Carleman estimates. We also recall the main ideas used to overcome the difficulties motivated by nonlinearities. First, we considered the classical heat equation with Dirichlet conditions and distributed controls. Then we analyze recent extensions to other linear and semilinear parabolic systems and/or boundary controls. Finally, we review the controllability properties for the Stokes and Navier–Stokes equations that are known to date. In this context, we have paid special attention to obtaining the necessary Carleman estimates. Some open questions are mentioned throughout the paper. We hope that this unified presentation will be useful for those researchers interested in the field.Ministerio de Educación y Cienci

Nursing professionals carry out important work evaluating the needs of patients and care-givers. They also provide the required care, as well as transmit the knowledge and skills of self-care. In the planning of care it is necessary to evaluate the Basic Activities of Daily Living (BADL), essential for self-care, such as cleaning and dressing oneself, using the bathroom among others. The objective of the present work is to evaluate the capacity of self-care in elderly people previous to hospital discharge or in the same way, measure the level of dependence/independence in the execution of BADL. For this, the Barthel index has been used as an evaluation tool. The hypothesis tested is the suitability of this instrument in the evaluation of planning nursing care. The above mentioned hypothesis has been contrasted with the application of BI in 32 patients above the age of 65 years admitted to the department of Internal Medicine at the Coria City Regional Hospital.

Estimation of the solubility parameters of model plant surfaces and agrochemicals: a valuable tool for understanding plant surface interactions

Background Most aerial plant parts are covered with a hydrophobic lipid-rich cuticle, which is the interface between the plant organs and the surrounding environment. Plant surfaces may have a high degree of hydrophobicity because of the combined effects of surface chemistry and roughness. The physical and chemical complexity of the plant cuticle limits the development of models that explain its internal structure and interactions with surface-applied agrochemicals. In this article we introduce a thermodynamic method for estimating the solubilities of model plant surface constituents and relating them to the effects of agrochemicals. Results Following the van Krevelen and Hoftyzer method, we calculated the solubility parameters of three model plant species and eight compounds that differ in hydrophobicity and polarity. In addition, intact tissues were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the surface free energy, polarity, solubility parameter and work of adhesion of each were calculated from contact angle measurements of three liquids with different polarities. By comparing the affinities between plant surface constituents and agrochemicals derived from (a) theoretical calculations and (b) contact angle measurements we were able to distinguish the physical effect of surface roughness from the effect of the chemical nature of the epicuticular waxes. A solubility parameter model for plant surfaces is proposed on the basis of an increasing gradient from the cuticular surface towards the underlying cell wall. Conclusions The procedure enabled us to predict the interactions among agrochemicals, plant surfaces, and cuticular and cell wall components, and promises to be a useful tool for improving our understanding of biological surface interactions

Photogrammetry is currently facing some challenges and changes mainly related to automation, ubiquitous processing and variety of applications. Within an ISPRS Scientific Initiative a team of researchers from USAL, UCLM, FBK and UNIBO have developed an open photogrammetric tool, called GRAPHOS (inteGRAted PHOtogrammetric Suite). GRAPHOS allows to obtain dense and metric 3D point clouds from terrestrial and UAV images. It encloses robust photogrammetric and computer vision algorithms with the following aims: (i) increase automation, allowing to get dense 3D point clouds through a friendly and easy-to-use interface; (ii) increase flexibility, working with any type of images, scenarios and cameras; (iii) improve quality, guaranteeing high accuracy and resolution; (iv) preserve photogrammetric reliability and repeatability. Last but not least, GRAPHOS has also an educational component reinforced with some didactical explanations about algorithms and their performance. The developments were carried out at different levels: GUI realization, image pre-processing, photogrammetric processing with weight parameters, dataset creation and system evaluation. The paper will present in detail the developments of GRAPHOS with all its photogrammetric components and the evaluation analyses based on various image datasets. GRAPHOS is distributed for free for research and educational needs

Nicotianamine Synthase 2 Is Required for Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation in Medicago truncatula Nodules

Symbiotic nitrogen fixation carried out by the interaction between legumes and diazotrophic bacteria known as rhizobia requires relatively large levels of transition metals. These elements are cofactors of many key enzymes involved in this process. Metallic micronutrients are obtained from soil by the roots and directed to sink organs by the vasculature, in a process mediated by a number of metal transporters and small organic molecules that facilitate metal delivery in the plant fluids. Among the later, nicotianamine is one of the most important. Synthesized by nicotianamine synthases (NAS), this molecule forms metal complexes participating in intracellular metal homeostasis and long-distance metal trafficking. Here we characterized the NAS2 gene from model legume Medicago truncatula. MtNAS2 is located in the root vasculature and in all nodule tissues in the infection and fixation zones. Symbiotic nitrogen fixation requires of MtNAS2 function, as indicated by the loss of nitrogenase activity in the insertional mutant nas2-1, phenotype reverted by reintroduction of a wild-type copy of MtNAS2. This would result from the altered iron distribution in nas2-1 nodules shown with X-ray fluorescence. Moreover, iron speciation is also affected in these nodules. These data suggest a role of nicotianamine in iron delivery for symbiotic nitrogen fixation
