Problems of Beckett’s Early Poetics

Samuel Beckett’s first novel, Dream of Fair to Middling Women, has been generally defined since its publication in 1992 as Beckett’s consciousdeparture from the narrative tradition in the West. Critics have pointed out the novel’s disregard for unity, the absence of a central plan, the range of unstable characters or the undermining authorial interventions. The object of this essay is to extend the argument further by examining Dream in terms of Mikhail Bakhtin’s ideas on the novel, as they were exposed in Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics. I will try to argue that Dream corresponds to the dismantling of an ideal in narrative art, defined by Bakhtin as the polyphonic novel. I will also highlight the features that make of Dream an anti-text in which the Irish writer explored the limits of the relationships he could have with his readers

An advanced symbolic analyzer for the automatic generation of analog circuit design equations

A tool for symbolic analysis of analog integrated circuits is presented featuring accurate simplification, pole/zero extraction, and tools for parametric AC circuit characterization. The program, called ASAP, uses signal flowgraph methods and has been written in C for portability. In its current version, ASAP is able to deal with the complexity levels arising in typical analog building blocks when described by device-level models. The ASAP inputs and outputs, the architecture, and the graphical interface are discussed

Etnología y etnias de la Turdetania en época prerromana

Frente a la imagen tradicional generada por la arqueología historicista, la configuración étnica de la Turdetania constituye una realidad sumamente compleja, dinámica e inestable, sujeta a constantes variaciones como consecuencia de diferentes circunstancias políticas, sociales y culturales. Recientes planteamientos teórico-metodológicos procedentes de la sociología y la antropología permiten al arqueólogo abordar este problema desde nuevas perspectivas que cuestionan el valor intrínseco las fuentes literarias y la documentación arqueológica en la definición de grupo étnico. Ambas deben ser tenidas en cuenta únicamente en la medida en que participen activamente en la construcción de la identidad étnica. No hay que olvidar, sin embargo la dificultad que entraña definir grupos étnicos en el espacio y en el tiempo, habida cuenta de que más que un fenómeno, la etnicidad constituye un proceso continuo. En esta ocasión nos centraremos en los dos principales grupos culturales de la Turdetania: los turdetanos y los púnicos que, lejos de constituir unidades étnico-territoriales homogéneas, presentan una amplia variedad de situaciones singulares

Recovery of Ionic Liquids from aqueous solution by Nanofiltration

The T-SAR methodology was combined with membrane characterization methods. An application of the combined approach was demonstrated with two commercial nanofiltration membranes and it was possible to successfully predict their performance for the recovery of ionic liquids from aqueous solution. Using model solutions of Pyr16 (CF3SO2)2N, it could be evidenced the formation of a new phase of ionic liquid during the concentration process. In this case, 66% of the ionic liquid was separated and the effective recovery rate was duplicated up to 30% by using a coalescence filter. Hydrophobic ionic liquids from wastewaters produced in biotransformations of 2-octanone to 2-octanol, could be recovered as a separate phase, but hydrophilic ionic liquids which are used for the dissolution of cellulose and its subsequent regeneration could be only recovered as an aqueous solution. Recommendations for the systematic recovery of ionic liquids from industrial wastewaters were also introduced
