Feeding and working strategies for oxen used for draft purposes in semi-arid West Africa
This study was conducted to determine the energy expenditure of draft oxen working on sandy soils, performing common agricultural tasks, so that energy requirements could be determined; to establish the relationships between work and intake and digestibility of roughages by draft oxen; to investigate the effect of body condition before work and liveweight losses during work on work performance, and to investigate the implications of heat stress on draft oxen in semi-arid areas. This information will allow informed decisions to be made on the feeding and management of draft animals in semi-arid areas. Four experiments were conducted. Experiment 1 investigated the energy costs of walking on soils of different consistencies and the efficiencies of doing work. Experiment 2 and 3 were designed to establish the effect of work on intake, digestibility and rate of passage of feeds (millet stover) in the digestive tract. Experiment 4 looked at the effect of body condition before work and weight losses during work on work performance. The effect of heat stress was also investigated in experiment 2, 3 and 4. This report gives details of these experiments, the results obtained and, based on these, the recommendations made regarding feeding and working strategies for draft oxen in semi-arid areas
Extended WKB method, resonances and supersymmetric radial barriers
Semiclassical approximations are implemented in the calculation of position
and width of low energy resonances for radial barriers. The numerical
integrations are delimited by t/T<<8, with t the period of a classical particle
in the barrier trap and T the resonance lifetime. These energies are used in
the construction of `haired' short range potentials as the supersymmetric
partners of a given radial barrier. The new potentials could be useful in the
study of the transient phenomena which give rise to the Moshinsky's diffraction

Nonlocal calculation for nonstrange dibaryons and tribaryons
We study the possible existence of nonstrange dibaryons and tribaryons by
solving the bound-state problem of the two- and three-body systems composed of
nucleons and deltas. The two-body systems are , , and

model by means of the resonating group method. We compare with previous results

El masaje es una de las terapias más utilizadas para aliviar el dolor muscular tardĂo (DMT). El objetivo del presente estudio fue determinar la efectividad del masaje en el tratamiento del DMT, para lo cual se llevĂł a cabo una revisiĂłn sistemática en las bases de datos, Pubmed, Scopus, SportDiscus, Web of Science y el buscador Google acadĂ©mico, usando las palabras clave delayed onset muscle soreness y exercise induced muscle damage combinado con massage. Se incluyeron en el estudio 23 artĂculos en los cuales el 78% mostrĂł disminuciĂłn del DMT mientras que en el restante 22% no hubo mejoras o bien empeorĂł. El análisis de los estudios permite concluir que el masaje es una terapia efectiva en el tratamiento del dolor muscular tardĂo
Basal forebrain volume reliably predicts the cortical spread of Alzheimer\u27s degeneration

Alzheimer\u27s disease neurodegeneration is thought to spread across anatomically and functionally connected brain regions. However, the precise sequence of spread remains ambiguous. The prevailing model used to guide in vivo human neuroimaging and non-human animal research assumes that Alzheimer\u27s degeneration starts in the entorhinal cortices, before spreading to the temporoparietal cortex. Challenging this model, we previously provided evidence that in vivo markers of neurodegeneration within the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NbM), a subregion of the basal forebrain heavily populated by cortically projecting cholinergic neurons, precedes and predicts entorhinal degeneration. There have been few systematic attempts at directly comparing staging models using in vivo longitudinal biomarker data, and none to our knowledge testing if comparative evidence generalizes across independent samples. Here we addressed the sequence of pathological staging in Alzheimer\u27s disease using two independent samples of the Alzheimer\u27s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (n1 = 284; n2 = 553) with harmonized CSF assays of amyloid-b and hyperphosphorylated tau (pTau), and longitudinal structural MRI data over 2 years. We derived measures of grey matter degeneration in a priori NbM and the entorhinal cortical regions of interest. To examine the spreading of degeneration, we used a predictive modelling strategy that tests whether baseline grey matter volume in a seed region accounts for longitudinal change in a target region. We demonstrated that predictive spread favoured the NbM!entorhinal over the entorhinal!NbM model. This evidence generalized across the independent samples. We also showed that CSF concentrations of pTau/amyloid-b moderated the observed predictive relationship, consistent with evidence in rodent models of an underlying trans-synaptic mechanism of pathophysiological spread. The moderating effect of CSF was robust to additional factors, including clinical diagnosis. We then applied our predictive modelling strategy to an exploratory whole-brain voxel-wise analysis to examine the spatial specificity of the NbM!entorhinal model. We found that smaller baseline NbM volumes predicted greater degeneration in localized regions of the entorhinal and perirhinal cortices. By contrast, smaller baseline entorhinal volumes predicted degeneration in the medial temporal cortex, recapitulating a prior influential staging model. Our findings suggest that degeneration of the basal forebrain cholinergic projection system is a robust and reliable upstream event of entorhinal and neocortical degeneration, calling into question a prevailing view of Alzheimer\u27s disease pathogenesis
Myers' type theorems and some related oscillation results
In this paper we study the behavior of solutions of a second order
differential equation. The existence of a zero and its localization allow us to
get some compactness results. In particular we obtain a Myers' type theorem
even in the presence of an amount of negative curvature. The technique we use
also applies to the study of spectral properties of Schroedinger operators on

Source apportionment of atmospheric trace gases and particulate matter: comparison of log-ratio and traditional approaches
In this paper we compare multivariate methods using both traditional approaches, which
ignore issues of closure and provide relatively simple methods to deal with censored or
missing data, and log-ratio methods to determine the sources of trace constituents in the
atmosphere. The data set examined was collected from April to July 2008 at a sampling site
near Woods Hole, Massachusetts, along the northeastern United States Atlantic coastline.
The data set consists of trace gas mixing ratios (O3, SO2, NOx, elemental mercury [Hgo], and
reactive gaseous mercury [RGM]), and concentrations of trace elements in fine (<2.5 ÎĽm)
particulate matter (Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cs, Fe, Ga, Hg, K, La, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Pb,
Rb, Sb, Sr, Th, Ti, V, Y, and Zn) with varying percentages of censored values for each
species.
The data were separated into two subcompositions: s1, which is comprised by RGM and
particulate Hg (HgP), which are both highly censored; and s2 which includes all of the trace
elements associated with particulate matter except Hg, and the trace gases O3, SO2, NOx, and
Hgo. Principal factor analysis (PFA) was successful in determining the primary sources for
constituents in s2 using both traditional and log-ratio approaches. Using the traditional
approach, regression between factor scores and RGM and particulate Hg concentrations
suggested that none of the sources identified during PFA led to positive contributions of
either reactive mercury compound. This finding is counter to most conventional thinking and
is likely specious, resulting from removal of censored data (up to >80% of the entire dataset)
during the analysis.
Log-ratio approaches to find relationships between constituents comprising s2 with RGM
and HgP (i.e., s1) focused on log-ratio correlation and regression analyses of alr-transformed
data, using Al as the divisor. Regression models accounted for large fractions of the variance
in concentrations of the two reactive mercury species and generally agreed with
conceptualizations about the formation and behavior of these species. An analysis of
independence between the subcompositions demonstrated that the behavior of the two
constituents comprising s1 (i.e., RGM and HgP) is dependent on changes in s2. Our findings
suggest that although problems related to closure are largely unknown or ignored in the
atmospheric sciences, much insight can be gleaned from the application of log-ratio methods
to atmospheric chemistry data
First report on natural infection with Leishmania infantum in a domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) in Spain
A pet domestic ferret (Mustela putorius furo) with a papular lesion involving the right pinna was diagnosed with chronic pyogranulomatous dermatitis by histopathologic examination. Intralesional, intracytoplasmic oval microorganisms compatible with Leishmania spp. or Histoplasma spp. were observed in macrophages and multinucleate giant cells. Leishmania infantum (L. infantum) infection was diagnosed by PCR, culture in Novy-MacNeal-Nicolle medium, and immunohistochemistry. Abnormal clinicopathological results included increased alanine transferase, alkaline phosphatase, serum gamma glutamyl transferase and polyclonal gammpathy. Anti-Leishmania antibodies were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunofluorescence antibody test and western blot using L. infantum antigen. Immunoreactivity against the 16 kDa specific L. infantum antigen fraction was observed by western blot. PCR performed in blood samples obtained from this patient after positive parasite isolation detected L. infantum DNA. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first diagnosis and isolation of L. infantum in a domestic ferret naturally infected in an endemic region (Spain) where canine and feline leishmaniosis is frequently detected. According to these findings, ferrets should be included as potential reservoir hosts of L. infantum. Future investigations should analyze the epidemiological role of ferrets in L. infantum infection including the prevalence of infection
Current-Induced Torques in Magnetic Metals: Beyond Spin Transfer
Current-induced torques on ferromagnetic nanoparticles and on domain walls in
ferromagnetic nanowires are normally understood in terms of transfer of
conserved spin angular momentum between spin-polarized currents and the
magnetic condensate. In a series of recent articles we have discussed a
microscopic picture of current-induced torques in which they are viewed as
following from exchange fields produced by the misaligned spins of current
carrying quasiparticles. This picture has the advantage that it can be applied
to systems in which spin is not approximately conserved. More importantly, this
point of view makes it clear that current-induced torques can also act on the
order parameter of an antiferromagnetic metal, even though this quantity is not
related to total spin. In this informal and intentionally provocative review we

Shear Viscosity of a Hot Pion Gas
The shear viscosity of an interacting pion gas is studied using the Kubo
formalism as a microscopic description of thermal systems close to global
equilibrium. We implement the skeleton expansion in order to approximate the
retarded correlator of the viscous part of the energy-momentum tensor. After
exploring this in theory we show how the skeleton expansion can be
consistently applied to pions in chiral perturbation theory. The shear
viscosity is determined by the spectral width, or equivalently, the mean
free path of pions in the heat bath. We derive a new analytical result for the
mean free path which is well-conditioned for numerical evaluation and discuss
the temperature and pion-mass dependence of the mean free path and the shear
viscosity. The ratio of the interacting pion gas exceeds the lower
