Edited Volumes, Monographs, and Book Chapters in the Book Citation Index (BKCI) and Science Citation Index (SCI, SoSCI, A&HCI)
In 2011, Thomson-Reuters introduced the Book Citation Index (BKCI) as part of
the Science Citation Index (SCI). The interface of the Web of Science version 5
enables users to search for both "Books" and "Book Chapters" as new categories.
Books and book chapters, however, were always among the cited references, and
book chapters have been included in the database since 2005. We explore the two
categories with both BKCI and SCI, and in the sister social sciences (SoSCI)
and the arts & humanities (A&HCI) databases. Book chapters in edited volumes
can be highly cited. Books contain many citing references but are relatively
less cited. This may find its origin in the slower circulation of books than of
journal articles. It is possible to distinguish between monographs and edited
volumes among the "Books" scientometrically. Monographs may be underrated in
terms of citation impact or overrated using publication performance indicators
because individual chapters are counted as contributions separately in terms of
articles, reviews, and/or book chapters.Comment: Journal of Scientometric Research, 2012, in pres
eBooks: Changing the Face of Books
The written world changed when Gutenberg built his printing press with moveable type. This revolutionary invention prepared the way for the mass publication of books. Now, much like the original Gutenberg, Project Gutenberg seeks to imitate the printing press's impact through electronic publication. Since its beginnings in 1971, Project Gutenberg has created over 18,000 electronic books. The number of titles is expanding daily, as is the amount of information available to persons everywhere. While the impact of the eBook is not as revolutionary as the original printing press, it is influencing education today. Teachers and students are increasingly using multimedia in the learning process, and eBooks play a vital role in that. Providing easy access to classic and influential works, eBooks allow more students to take advantage of the learning of the past in a format of today
More work is required to make academic “timescapes” worth inhabiting and to open up space for creative work
Is the problem with contemporary academia really one of constant acceleration? Ulrike Felt argues that focusing too much on acceleration overlooks a more complex phenomenon at work. What is needed is careful investigation of “time generators”, the key sites in academia that create binding temporal requirements and regulations. Many of academia’s recent reforms – to funding structures, assessment exercises, accountability procedures, curricula or career paths – have all involved important temporal reordering work. This work has inevitable effects on core academic work and may have consequences for who remains in academia and who leaves. More attention thus needs to be devoted to the ways different academic times come together to form a “timescape”
The impact of cultural dissonance and acculturation orientations on immigrant students' academic performance
Indexación: Scopus; Scielo; Redalyc.Prior research has documented meaningful differences between school
performance of immigrant and native students. Multicultural education has been
associated with academic failure of foreign students. e aim of this study was to examine
the impact of a set of psychosocial variables on the perceived academic achievement
of first generation immigrant adolescents from public secondary schools in Northern
Spain. Results showed that 46% of the variability in foreign students’ perceived academic
performance was explained by home-school cultural dissonance. We also explored the
impact of acculturation orientation to separation, perception of discrimination from
teachers, school adjustment, and psychological well-being in academic performance.
Any multicultural education context should take into account psychosocial adjustment,
given its influence on academic performance of all studentsSe han hallado diferencias significativas entre el rendimiento académico de

Evaluation of Aeroservoelastic Effects on Flutter
This report presents work performed by The Boeing Company to satisfy the deliverable "Evaluation of aeroservoelastic Effects on Symmetric Flutter" for Subtask 7 of Reference 1. The objective of this report is to incorporate the improved methods for studying the effects of a closed-loop control system on the aeroservoelastic behavior of the airplane planned under NASA HSR technical Integration Task 20 work. Also, a preliminary evaluation of the existing pitch control laws on symmetric flutter of the TCA configuration was addressed."The goal is to develop an improved modeling methodology and perform design studies that account for the aero-structures-systems interaction effects
