    Essays on growth and development

This dissertation is composed by three chapters evolving around the role of deindustrialization in the process of growth and development. This first chapter focuses on the manufacturing's share of employment, which is known to follow a hump-shaped pattern as economies structurally transform. Motivated by the observation that capital intensities in manufacturing increase over the development process, this chapter examines whether such changes are important in accounting for the hump-shaped pattern in manufacturing employment shares as well as the decline in agriculture and the rise in services. It does this by putting forth a model of the structural transformation that allows for varying rates of technological rates, long-run Engel curves, international trade, as well as time-varying capital intensities. The model is calibrated to the experience of South Korea between 1970 and 2010 and the importance of these four factors for the structural transformation is analyzed. The main finding is that whereas heterogeneous rates of technological change, long-run Engel curves and international trade are important for accounting for various elements of the structural transformation, only time-varying capital intensities are critical for generating the hump-shaped pattern in manufacturing employment fairly close. Time-varying capital intensities are the additional "labor push" needed to explain the observed movement of labor out of manufacturing. The second chapter provides quantitative evidence of the Ricardian Effect, namely the replacement of labor in the production process when capital is introduced. Based on a unique plant-level longitudinal dataset for Colombian manufacturing establishments for the period 1982-1998, this article exploits the disaggregation of the labor force between non-production (managers) and production (workers) employees to test whether there is supporting evidence of the Ricardian Effect in Colombia; whether this effect varies between two qualitatively different types of labor; and whether this effect was influenced by the so-called "market oriented reforms" that Colombia experienced during the early 1990s. After estimating input demands for capital, managers, and workers instrumenting output with demand shocks, I found that the output elasticities for the three inputs are close to 0.6, while the price elasticities for capital, managers, and workers are -0.28, -0.32, and -0.21 respectively. Based on a simulated arrival of cheaper capital goods, these input demand coefficients are used to predict that, on average, when a plant increases its capital stock by about 67 per cent, it will reduce its payroll by one manager and 4 workers. Capital replaces labor, and this replacement is stronger for employees that perform routine tasks in the work place. This replacement is significantly stronger during the post-reform years since these reforms turned input demands to be more elastic with respect to prices. Importantly, these effects are not driven by plant's observable characteristics. The last chapter, written in collaboration with Cesare Buiatti and Joao Duarte, seeks to explain labor productivity differences of the service sector between Europe and the U.S. through the labor allocation taking place within the service sector. We are interested in understanding why is Europe falling behind the United States in terms of aggregate labor productivity. We measure labor productivity levels using a multi-sector structural transformation model that decomposes services into 11 sub-sectors comparable across Europe and the U.S. It is well known that the underperformance of Europe vis-à-vis the U.S. is related to services. We use our structural transformation model to find which service sectors are largely responsible for the lagging behind. We identify wholesale and retail trade as well as business services as the two sectors responsible for most of the lack of catch up in labor productivity between Europe and the U.S

BACKGROUND: Patient expectations regarding surgery may be related to outcomes in total joint replacement (TJR). The aim of this study was to determine the association of patient expectations with health related quality of life (HRQoL) outcomes measured by Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and Short Form 12 (SF-12) and satisfaction with current symptoms measured on a 4-point Likert scale, one year after surgery, adjusting for Body Mass Index (BMI), age, gender, joint, education, previous intervention and baseline scores. METHODS: Consecutive patients preparing for TJR of the knee or hip due to primary osteoarthritis (OA) in 15 hospitals in Spain were recruited for the study. Patients completed questionnaires before surgery and 12 months afterwards: five questions about expectations before surgery; an item to measure satisfaction; two HRQoL instruments—WOMAC and SF-12; as well as questions about sociodemographic information. To determine the association of patient expectations at baseline, with changes in HRQoL 12 months after surgery and with satisfaction, general linear models and logistic regression analysis were performed. RESULTS: A total of 892 patients took part in the study. Patients who had higher pain relief or ability to walk expectations improved more in HRQoL at 12 months. Moreover, patients with high daily activity expectations were more satisfied. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with higher baseline expectations for TJR, improved more in HRQoL at one year and had more likelihood to be satisfied than patients with lower expectations, adjusted for BMI, age, gender, joint, education, previous intervention and HRQoL baseline scores

Heterotetracenes: Flexible Synthesis and in Silico Assessment of the Hole Transport Properties

Thienoacenes and furoacenes are among the most frequent molecular units found in organic materials. The efficient synthesis of morphologically different heteroacenes and the rapid determination of their solid-state and electronic properties are still challenging tasks, which slow down progress in the development of new materials. Herein, we report a flexible and efficient synthesis of unprecedented heterotetracenes based on a platinum- and gold- catalyzed cyclization-alkynylation domino process using EthynylBenziodoXole (EBX) hypervalent iodine reagents as key step. The proof-of-principle in silico estimation of the synthesized tetracenes' charge transport properties reveals their strong dependence on both the position and nature of the heteroatoms in the ring system. A broad range of mobilities is predicted, with some compounds displaying performance potentially comparable to that of state-of-the art electronic organic materials

Lymphocyte populations in the adventitial layer of hydatid cysts in cattle : relationship with cyst fertility status and Fasciola Hepatica co-infection

Cystic echinococcosis is a worldwide zoonosis caused by the cestode Echinococcus granulosus. Two types of hydatid cysts occur in intermediate hosts: fertile cysts that generate protoscoleces from the germinal layer of the cyst, and infertile cysts that do not produce protoscoleces and are unable to continue the life cycle of the parasite. The adventitial layer, a host-derived fibrous capsule surrounding the hydatid cyst, is suggested to play an important role in local immune regulation during infection and in fertility of the cysts. Fasciola hepatica, another important parasite of cattle, induces a characteristic Th2-like immune response that could modulate the immune response against E. granulosus. Natural co-infection of both parasites is common in cattle, but no reports describe the local immune response against E. granulosus with F. hepatica infection in the same host. This study analyzed the number and distribution of T and B cells in the adventitial layer of liver and lung cysts and the relationship with cyst fertility and F. hepatica co-infection. T lymphocytes were the predominant cell type in the adventitial layer of infertile hydatid cysts and were more numerous in infertile hydatid cysts. B lymphocyte numbers were not associated with hydatid cyst fertility. Mast cells were infrequent in the adventitial layer. The number of T and B cells was not associated with F. hepatica co-infection. The present study contributes to the understanding of local immune responses in bovine cystic echinococcosis.http://journals.sagepub.com/home/vethj2021Companion Animal Clinical Studie

Modelo prolab: Smart BabySit, una propuesta tecnológica de cuidado de niños de madres trabajadoras de la ciudad de Lima

    Get PDF
The problem identified in the study is the progressive deterioration of the female labor productivity of professional mothers, whose exponentiality and scalability can lead them to abandon their jobs. In this sense, the study develops a proposal for a daycare service entrepreneurship for professional working mothers, at the executive level, which has been designed through a qualitative research process that mainly used the technique of interviewing potential clients, who not only allowed the identification of gaps in the care and attention of their minor children but also to characterize the aforementioned undertaking. The results have identified a need expressed in the shortening of the distance that the working mother has with her child during working hours, which causes her anguish, for which she requires support in stimulation, health care and safety of her youngest child, especially in the stages of her baby's life when she depends the most on her. The identified solution is gathered in the minimum viable product, generated from an ideation and design process, whose particularity is the high technological component that it incorporates, complemented by closeness and specialization in care, aimed at a clearly delimited public: women between the ages of 25 and 40 who work in person all week, with children between three and 36 months. The value proposition that supports the business model is sustainable, not only financial (even in the pessimistic scenario), but also social, since it is linked to the state effort to promote gender equality, as established in its commitment to compliance with the United Nations sustainable development goals

ANGPTL-4 is Associated with Obesity and Lipid Profile in Children and Adolescents

Angiopoietin-like protein 4 (ANGPTL-4) regulates lipidic metabolism and affects energy homeostasis. However, its function in children with obesity remains unknown. We investigated plasma ANGPTL-4 levels in children and its relationship with body mass index (BMI) and different lipidic parameters such as free fatty acids (FFA). Plasma ANGPTL-4 levels were analyzed in two different cohorts. In the first cohort (n = 150, age 3–17 years), which included children with normal weight or obesity, we performed a cross-sectional study. In the second cohort, which included only children with obesity (n = 20, age 5–18 years) followed up for two years after an intervention for weight loss, in which we performed a longitudinal study measuring ANGPTL-4 before and after BMI-loss. In the cross-sectional study, circulating ANGPTL-4 levels were lower in children with obesity than in those with normal weight. Moreover, ANGPTL-4 presented a negative correlation with BMI, waist circumference, weight, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance index (HOMA index), triglycerides, and leptin, and a positive correlation with FFA and vitamin-D. In the longitudinal study, the percent change in plasma ANGPTL-4 was correlated with the percent change in FFA, total-cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. This study reveals a significant association of ANGPTL-4 with pediatric obesity and plasma lipid profileThis research was funded by INSTITUTO DE SALUD CARLOS III cofounded by FEDER, grants number PI18/00998, PI15/01272, PI11/02042, PI16/01301, and PI16/00871, and FUNDACIÓN MUTUA MADRILEÑAS
