A behavioral choice model of the use of car-sharing and ride-sourcing services

There are a number of disruptive mobility services that are increasingly finding their way into the marketplace. Two key examples of such services are car-sharing services and ride-sourcing services. In an effort to better understand the influence of various exogenous socio-economic and demographic variables on the frequency of use of ride-sourcing and car-sharing services, this paper presents a bivariate ordered probit model estimated on a survey data set derived from the 2014-2015 Puget Sound Regional Travel Study. Model estimation results show that users of these services tend to be young, well-educated, higher-income, working individuals residing in higher-density areas. There are significant interaction effects reflecting the influence of children and the built environment on disruptive mobility service usage. The model developed in this paper provides key insights into factors affecting market penetration of these services, and can be integrated in larger travel forecasting model systems to better predict the adoption and use of mobility-on-demand servicesStatistic

Inefficient lobbying, populism and oligarchy

The authors investigate the theoretical effects of lobbying and pressure group activities on both economic efficiency and on equity. Looking at lobbying as a political activity that takes place alongside production, they find that lobbies may generate economic inefficiency as part of the process of shifting the allocation of government expenditures in their favor. Outcomes of this non-electoral political process will always be biased toward the group with a comparative advantage in politics, rather than in production. Multi-asset minority games

We study analytically and numerically Minority Games in which agents may invest in different assets (or markets), considering both the canonical and the grand-canonical versions. We find that the likelihood of agents trading in a given asset depends on the relative amount of information available in that market. More specifically, in the canonical game players play preferentially in the stock with less information. The same holds in the grand canonical game when agents have positive incentives to trade, whereas when agents payoff are solely related to their speculative ability they display a larger propensity to invest in the information-rich asset. Furthermore, in this model one finds a globally predictable phase with broken ergodicity

An Exploratory Study on the Usage of Quantum Programming Languages

Although several imperative, declarative, and multi-paradigm quantum programming languages with different features and goals have been developed in the last 25 years, no study has been conducted on who, how, and what for does one use a quantum programming language. In this thesis, we first identified and described several quantum programming languages and then surveyed 251 quantum practitioners to answer several questions related to the usage of quantum programming languages. Further, an analysis of the results obtained is presented and shows that most of the quantum practitioners use the languages for research and that Qiskit (Python) is the most used one. Finally, we make recommendations for further development of quantum programming languages, such as building on top of a classical programming language, running in real quantum computers, supporting language documentation, and consulting developers’ needs

Mito de Fausto como substrato em Machado de Assis a partir do conselheiro Aires

Tese (doutorado)—Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Letras, Departamento de Teoria Literária e Literaturas, 2009.A tese que aqui apresentamos é a de que o personagem, nomeado conselheiro Aires, de Machado de Assis é um tipo faustiano. A sustentação desta proposta passa pela admissão de Aires como um duplo machadiano, e como tal um escritor ficcional moderno periférico que se desdobra em outros duplos, notadamente os personagens das obras literárias supostamente de sua autoria, Esaú e Jacó e o Memorial de Aires. Resultado dos sete cadernos manuscritos de Aires, as obras machadianas em questão nos servem para a alusão ao mito de Fausto como um referencial simbólico da modernidade e por sua vez um substrato detectado numa escala reduzida e de forma degradada na literatura brasileira, o que neste âmbito encerra uma antinomia local-universal. Apontamos que há uma tensão dialética criativa entre a omissão e conivência política com a elite dominante por parte de Aires-Fausto, e sua observação à distancia que resulta no trabalho artístico-literário. Por uma via antinômica faustiana identificada na expressão literária de Aires-Machado verifica-se, pois, o testemunho dos acontecimentos histórico-culturais do século XIX que são decisivos para o destino brasileiro, que então vislumbra um horizonte de nação. O trabalho literário em questão imprime o ponto de vista do escritor e seu duplo, que abarcam uma crítica radical ao projeto nacional, e o desejo malogrado do sujeito num ambiente periférico da modernidade. ________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACTThe thesis hereby presented is that Counsellor Aires, a Machado de Assis character, is a faustian type. The sustenance of this proposal requires the admission of Aires as a machadian double and as such, a peripheric modern fictional author which unfolds into other doubles, especially the characters of the literary works supposedly written by him, Esaú e Jacó and Memorial de Aires. Result from Aires‟ seven manuscript copybooks, the refered machadian works allude to the myth of Faust as a symbolic reference to modernity and a substract detected in a reduced scale and in a degraded form in Brazilian literature, which in this ambit brings a local-universal antinomy. There is a creative dialectic tension between omission and political connivance with the dominant élite by Aires-Faust and its observation from a distance that results in artistic-literary work. Through a faustian antinomian way identified in the literary expression of Aires-Machado, one verifies, therefore, the testimony do of historical-cultural happenings of the XIX th century that are crucial for Brazilian destiny, which then glimpses a nation horizon. The refered literary work imprints the writer‟s and its double‟s point of view which brings a radical criticism to the natural project and the failed desire of the subject in a peripheric environment of modernity

The analysis of writing tasks in an EAP textbook : does the book help us teach?

This study aims at analysing the writing section tasks of the textbook "Q: skills for Success - Level 4” discussing their adequacy for the English for Academic Purposes teaching in the context of the Languages without Borders program. Languages without Borders is a program that is both, an academic English teaching center at Brazilian public universities and a teacher education program (VIAL, 2017; KIRSCH, 2017). Since most teachers in the program are undergraduate students, in this research, we assume that the textbooks used in this context must offer support for these teachers who are still being trained. For this purpose, we analysed the tasks from the student’s book and the instructions of use from the teacher’s manual to answer the following question: Is the analysed book appropriate for the Languages without Borders context, baring in mind that most part of the staff is still learning how to teach?. We conclude that the analysed textbook can be a good tool for both students and teachers.Este estudo tem por objetivo analisar as tarefas da seção de escrita do livro de inglês “Q: skills for Success - Level 4 e discutir sua viabilidade para o contexto do programa Idiomas sem Fronteiras. O Idiomas sem Fronteira é um programa que, além de ser um programa de ensino de inglês acadêmico nas universidades públicas brasileiras, é também um programa de formação de professores (VIAL, 2017; KIRSCH, 2017) Como a maioria dos professores do Programa ainda são alunos de graduação, parte-se do pressuposto de que os materiais adotados pelo Programa devam oferecer subsídios suficientes para este professor ainda em formação. Para tanto, foram analisadas as tarefas do livro do aluno e as instruções do Manual do Professor partindo do seguinte questionamento: a) O livro é adequado para o contexto de ensino/ aprendizagem do programa Idiomas sem Fronteiras, tendo em mente que a maioria dos professores-bolsistas está em formação?. Concluímos que o livro analisado pode ser uma boa ferramenta tanto para os alunos como para os professores

Sobre pontes e abismos: aproximações e conflitos entre os estudos culturais e a economia política da comunicação a partir da obra de Stuart Hall

This paper reflects on the approximations and tensions between cultural studies and the political economy of communication, taking the work of Stuart Hall as a contact point. From the reflections that the author proposes on the theme of ideology and the relations between economy and culture, we argue that the understanding of social phenomena cannot The understanding of social phenomena cannot dispense with an approach that articulates different fields in order to reach the social totality. In his analyzes of culture, ideology, and identity, Hall uses the concrete perspective of historical materialism without limiting himself to economic determinism, especially through a posture of theoretical renewal that helps to overcome dissent between the two camps.O presente artigo reflete sobre as aproximações e tensões entre os estudos culturais e a economia política da comunicação, tomando como ponto de contato a obra de Stuart Hall. A partir das reflexões que o autor propõe sobre o tema da ideologia e as relações entre economia e cultura, argumenta-se que a compreensão dos fenômenos sociais não pode prescindir de uma abordagem que articule os diferentes campos, a fim de alcançar a totalidade social. Em suas análises sobre cultura, ideologia e identidade, Hall serve-se da perspectiva concreta do materialismo histórico sem se limitar ao determinismo econômico, sobretudo por meio de uma postura de renovação teórica que ajuda a superar as dissidências entre os dois campos

O ensino de história regional a partir de visita técnica ao centro histórico da cidade

Anais do II Seminário Seminário Estadual PIBID do Paraná: tecendo saberes / organizado por Dulcyene Maria Ribeiro e Catarina Costa Fernandes — Foz do Iguaçu: Unioeste; Unila, 2014O presente trabalho é resultado do projeto PIBID, subprojeto de história. O projeto surgiu a partir da problemática de como ensinar história regional dentro de um contexto educacional eurocêntrico e generalista. Levando essa realidade em consideração e a importância de proporcionar aos alunos vivenciar a história do Estado do Paraná, decidimos realizar uma visita técnica ao centro histórico da cidade. Antes disso iniciamos aulas expositivas sobre a história do Paraná e da cidade de Curitiba, desde os tempos coloniais até a emancipação política do Estado, problematizando questões políticas, sociais e culturais de cada período. Depois dessa primeira etapa concluída, levamos os estudantes para uma visita técnica ao centro histórico de Curitiba e ao Museu Paranaense, elencando e relembrando durante o trajeto questões que foram trabalhadas em sala de aul
