Hysteretic behavior of spatially coupled phase-oscillators
Motivated by phenomena related to biological systems such as the
synchronously flashing swarms of fireflies, we investigate a network of phase
oscillators evolving under the generalized Kuramoto model with inertia. A
distance-dependent, spatial coupling between the oscillators is considered.
Zeroth and first order kernel functions with finite kernel radii were chosen to
investigate the effect of local interactions. The hysteretic dynamics of the
synchronization depending on the coupling parameter was analyzed for different
kernel radii. Numerical investigations demonstrate that (1) locally locked
clusters develop for small coupling strength values, (2) the hysteretic
behavior vanishes for small kernel radii, (3) the ratio of the kernel radius
and the maximal distance between the oscillators characterizes the behavior of
the network

Problems of surveying profile shapes of gothic architectural fragments
The quest for the secret of geometric design methods and proportioning strategies of medieval master builders dates back to the middle of the 19th century. The improvement of surveying technologies allows adapting the advantages of laser-based instruments and computer aided analysis to the observation of this subject of revolving relevance. The subject of the paper research is to present the analysis of medieval architectural details from a geometrical point of view. In the current status of the research the paper focuses on the methodological aspects of the surveying process of gothic architectural fragments
Enhancing cognition across the lifespan : transfer effects of task-switching training in young and old adults
Aging is characterized by a decline of performance in many measures of cognitive functioning such as working-memory, inhibition, and reasoning. A previous training study (Karbach & Kray, 2009) indicated that task-switching training might improve crucial cognitive processes which are affected by aging, leading to broad transfer effects in both old and young adults. The present study aimed to identify exactly which processes to train in order to facilitate transfer across task domains with cognitive control training. To this end we manipulated memory-load and inhibition-load in a task-switching paradigm, as we expected these processes to be the important variables affecting training scope. We compared performance improvements in four task-switching groups and an active control group in a pretest-training-posttest design with young and old adults. High inhibition-load seems to be crucial during training, as near-transfer in old adults was evident only in this condition. However, we did not find far-transfer effects, which we attribute to the sparse training material and relatively low cognitive control demands during training. In summary, our near-transfer results, together with the latest developments in the literature, suggest that transfer scope might be maximized through high inhibition training conditions in old adults.
