Shallow vs deep learning architectures for white matter lesion segmentation in the early stages of multiple sclerosis
In this work, we present a comparison of a shallow and a deep learning
architecture for the automated segmentation of white matter lesions in MR
images of multiple sclerosis patients. In particular, we train and test both
methods on early stage disease patients, to verify their performance in
challenging conditions, more similar to a clinical setting than what is
typically provided in multiple sclerosis segmentation challenges. Furthermore,
we evaluate a prototype naive combination of the two methods, which refines the
final segmentation. All methods were trained on 32 patients, and the evaluation
was performed on a pure test set of 73 cases. Results show low lesion-wise
false positives (30%) for the deep learning architecture, whereas the shallow
architecture yields the best Dice coefficient (63%) and volume difference
(19%). Combining both shallow and deep architectures further improves the
lesion-wise metrics (69% and 26% lesion-wise true and false positive rate,
respectively).Comment: Accepted to the MICCAI 2018 Brain Lesion (BrainLes) worksho
Empowering the bottom of the pyramid - an analysis of an investment cooperation in Angola: the case of ONI Communications
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a business model for companies that do foresee the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) as a promising and challenging market, that can enhance their position in the competitive context. According to Prahalad’s definition, ―world’s 4 billion poor, people who live on far less than 2 a day‖, are located at the BoP (Prahalad & Hart, first quarter 2002).
Angola, the target market of this study, is one of the world’s poorest countries and one the fastest growing economies. It started reinventing itself economically and politically, after the end of the civil war in 2002, creating the right conditions for companies to invest. Angola attracted since 2003 over 1.124 projects representing more than USD 4 billion in investment capital. This study describes the benefits Angola, as fast growing economy, brings to foreign investors and the many advantages it presents mostly to Portuguese companies due to its long-relationship with Portugal. Doing business in Angola can lead to an indirect development of other sectors, welfare increase and competition. Based on the experience of ONI Communications in vertical solutions, this study developed a business case where farmers subscribed at a farmer cooperative benefited from information on market prices, new products and farming techniques, or accessed micro-credit. The synergies resulted from the partnership among a Portuguese company, a state-owned Angolan company, and a cooperative with a big impact on the target Market at an educational level, or in both infrastructures and sector development. The long relationship between Portugal and Angola, their common bonds and similarities bring benefits to this partnership.
Angola is a market to be explored, although still living the consequences of the Civil War.
With this study a new way to explore markets similar to Angola was developed and a new way to benefit from its emerging opportunities.O objectivo deste trabalho é desenvolver um modelo de negócio que sirva de referencia para as empresas que vêm a Base da Pirâmide (BdP) como um mercado promissor e desafiador, fortalecendo a posição da empresa em relação à concorrência.
Advances in integration of photovoltaic power and energy production in practical systems
This thesis presents advances in integration of photovoltaic (PV) power and energy
in practical systems, such as existing power plants in buildings or directly integrated
in the public electrical grid. It starts by providing an analyze of the current state of
PV power and some of its limitations. The work done in this thesis begins by providing
a model to compute mutual shading in large PV plants, and after provides
a study of the integration of a PV plant in a biogas power plant. The remainder
sections focus on the work done for project PVCROPS, which consisted on the construction
and operation of two prototypes composed of a PV system and a novel
battery connected to a building and to the public electrical grid. These prototypes
were then used to test energy management strategies and validate the suitability
of the two advanced batteries (a lithium-ion battery and a vanadium redox
ow
battery) for households (BIPV) and PV plants. This thesis is divided in 7 chapters:
Chapter 1 provides an introduction to explain and develop the main research questions
studied for this thesis; Chapter 2 presents the development of a ray-tracing
model to compute shading in large PV elds (with or without trackers); Chapter 3
shows the simulation of hybridizing a biogas plant with a PV plant, using biogas as
energy storage; Chapters 4 and 5 present the construction, programming, and initial
operation of both prototypes (Chapter 4), EMS testing oriented to BIPV systems
(Chapter 5). Finally, Chapters 6 provides some future lines of investigation that can
follow this thesis, and Chapter 7 shows a synopsis of the main conclusions of this
work; Resumo:
Come ça
A tese

Molecular dynamics simulations for the prediction of the dielectric spectra of alcohols, glycols, and monoethanolamine
The response of molecular systems to electromagnetic radiation in the microwave region (0.3–300 GHz) has been principally studied experimentally, using broadband dielectric spectroscopy. However, relaxation times corresponding to reorganisation of molecular dipoles due to their interaction with electromagnetic radiation at microwave frequencies are within the scope of modern molecular simulations. In this work, fluctuations of the total dipole moment of a molecular system, obtained through molecular dynamics simulations, are used to determine the dielectric spectra of water, a series of alcohols and glycols, and monoethanolamine. Although the force fields employed in this study have principally been developed to describe thermodynamic properties, most them give fairly good predictions of this dynamical property for these systems. However, the inaccuracy of some models and the long simulation times required for the accurate estimation of the static dielectric constant can sometimes be problematic. We show that the use of the experimental value for the static dielectric constant in the calculations, instead of the one predicted by the different models, yields satisfactory results for the dielectric spectra, and hence the heat absorbed from microwaves, avoiding the need for extraordinarily long simulations or re-calibration of molecular models

Pedro Jordão, Revista Nu nº02 “Lugares”, p.02.
sempre delicado e poucas vezes bem sucedido.” 2
privilegiando a qualidade arquitectónica.
tempo antigo.
ano).
No
transformação do espaço construído e quem o irá habitar.
Arquitectos Manuel e Francisco Aires Mateus ‐ antiga adega . Casa em Brejos de Azeitão . 2001_2003.
Arquitecto Miguel Figueira – antigo celeiro . Casa de Montemor . 2006; ### ABSTRACT:
“Conversion. Generate a place in what appeared to be a mere waste. We
need to dream more spaces. How we are dreaming these pages. They are the
place that we created. With our tools, references and wills. A place that will
evolve over time and words.”
Pedro Jordão, Revista Nu nº02 “Lugares”, p.02. In a world full of ideas and thoughts, abandonment and losses, dreams and achievements, there is a
man creator of his own world in which the home is his refuge. A shelter as synonymous of protection
may be any type of space, capable of responding to various requirements and which, from a logical
thought, can be transformed, refurbished, becoming a living space open to an outside world. A world in
which the city, made of discontinuity, underwent a process of growth and urbanization, expanding its
limits, while the villages remained stagnant over time, there was no evolution only the abandonment of
their own brands and activities of the people. This subsequent developments, especially industrial and
technology, led to the abandonment of old buildings, which played a utilitarian function and showed
themselves indispensable in the life of man, thus becoming its main features in the landscape and
memory of a time. The examples are small factories, warehouses, barns, mills and wineries, forgotten
over time, degraded with abandonment. What remains of them and survive the force of time, cause in
man a state of sensitivity, daring him to protect and maintain somehow their story, memory or simply
its quality material, spatial and formal. Besides to rehabilitate or restore what exists, preexistence (De +
pre‐existence, quality that is preexisting priority of existence, former existence.), also interested to
reuse and convert, turning and giving a new function space. At a time when housing and way of living
become important in the experience of man, why not use these preexistences and turn them to their
shelter, giving them a new function but keeping its essence? "The conversion is a type of intervention
which allows a relative freedom in the design of the project and is based on criteria that allow a greater
degree of transformation, compared to other types of actions, such as the restoration or rehabilitation."
This intervention starts of the perception of space, the relationship that it has with the place and the
relationship that is likely to have with whoever who will inhabit it. It is thus pertinent to question how a
building that was created for a function can be turned into housing, recognizing what factors or
conditions that may enable this exciting transformation. There is a housing program that somehow
adjusts the preexistence as required design and that will only make sense if they prove functionality and
comfort, it is important the sensitivity and knowledge of the architect and the relationship with those
who will inhabit ‐ the user. "(...) the new function always brings the need to reorganize the functionality
of spaces to accommodate the new use. This process that requires adaptation to the new function spaces
is always delicate and rarely successful."
The preexistence, much more than a threshold in the process of designing, can become the
provocative element to question for a new way of living. Interest realize then what is inhabit, shelter,
house, how these concepts relate, not only among themselves but also with the landscape, place and
man. In an intervention of this nature, how the connection is changed with the landscape or territory,
the place, approaching issues such as memory and essence of the place ‐ the genius Locci. "We can say
that, for numerous times and spaces in which we speak of the place, is the inability to be anything else,
that this place is referred, and its essence allows us to identify it, name it and immediately distinguish it
from any other place."
After the approach and analysis of various topics and to complement this process, are contextualized
and analyzed five works from five different architects, which, in addition to differentiate into various
aspects, have a common point in relation to the initial concept. Both projects start with preexistences, which are converted into private homes, privileging architectural quality. This descriptive analysis and
critique seeks to explore the process of architectural intervention with this specificity, realize the
consequences and outline the major constraints, including how these have influenced the final condition
– THE HOUSE. An approach based on documental research, in seeking to understand the design process
before the various contexts in common among the five cases. These are representative examples of this
theme and are chronologically presented according to a logic in which it is not intended to distinguish
any kind of relevance. It is noted, in the cases mentioned, a conscious importance of establishing
dialogue between tradition and contemporaneity and an interest in the study of various specificities of
the conversion of uses. They are spaces and shapes that suggest emotions, recreate images and indicate
references, in a full respect of tradition, memories and authenticity of inhabitat. Five architects,
different languages, who refuse to propose models or follow rules and standards, and show they aware
of the importance of planning on the built, with a strong sensitivity combined with a vast knowledge.
These projects are presented as special cases in the course and reference axes of the authors, always
connected to their own past experiences and that somehow influenced each result. They seek a
balanced and noticeable intervention ethic where it is noted the concern on the idea of continuity,
although the preexistence is seen as provocative and defining element of the project, on which
contemporary knowledge becomes the extension of the old time. There are five cases, which one with
scale and capacity to integrate a new program ‐ single‐family housing. Between changes in seasonal and
permanent housing or temporary housing, four of the case studies are located in different points in
Portugal and one case in another European country, Belgium, permitting a more comprehensive and
comparative analysis. There are five projects of five different architects, starting all of the preexistence.
Each one with its own constraints become a different solution with a similar line of thought and
dialogue. The rural buildings, when constructed as a response of existing needs, were defined according
to the type of the product that would store and consequently to the time of year (season). A rural and
vernacular architecture defined and characterized by the existent relationship between man and earth,
and so became a selection of five cases, all of different type of role they played, the farm in which
utensils were stored and some products for use on land), the haystack (local storage of straw), the cellar
(storage and transformation of grapes for processing into wine), the sequeiro (fruit and cereals storage
and drying place) and the barn (grain storage). All the cases reach several solutions, on which architect
sought to build on the built, with memories and languages already defined that could transform and
define such a new architecture, in this case, contemporary. In the first case new volumes are added to
those already existing, on the second the architect keeps the traditional materials and techniques, on
the third the architects start of the preexisting as a boundary between two times, in the fourth case the
architect rebuilds the preexistence and redefines its proportions and dimensions, on the last case, is the
architect himself who ends up being the inhabitant of the new space, thus allowing a more accurate
relationship between the transformation of the built and who will inhabit 1 . "I felt the need to not change the core of this relationship built with the landscape, as if only one
volume, only a house. And yet articulate it. There are more such centers, not always well articulated. It is
essential to maintain the concentration of buildings and not spread."
Architect Álvaro Siza Vieira ‐ old farmhouse. House in Belgium. 1997_2003.
2 . "It is the attempt to merge times in a time which is hybrid in which it appears in some way to view the
face of the building at different times."
Architect João Mendes Ribeiro ‐ old haystacks. House in Cortegaça. 2000_2004.
3 . "What is rich in the process is to design the space that exists between the two things, is to draw air
from the outside limit and new compartments that need to exist. And not only is the program as the
design arranged in the order of that left space.”
Architects Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus ‐ old wine cellar. House in Brejos Azeitão. 2001_2003.
4 . "Among the absolute fidelity to preexisting necessarily forcing any one add, and its reinterpretation in
a new model that preserves its essence, we chose the second path. The ‘sequeiro’ has reborn (...)."
Architect José Gigante ‐ old upland. House in Guimarães. 2002_2005.
5 . "It burned a barn in Montemor. Someone took the opportunity, partitioned the space and made a
vulgar house. Arranged the yard, took care of the walnut tree and ripped windows to the main street.
Once populated, the house was again abandoned."

Implementation and validation of a self-consumption maximization energy management strategy in a Vanadium Redox Flow BIPV demonstrator
This paper presents the results of the implementation of a self-consumption maximization strategy tested in a real-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) (5 kW, 60 kWh) and Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) demonstrator (6.74 kWp). The tested energy management strategy aims to maximize the consumption of energy generated by a BIPV system through the usage of a battery. Whenever possible, the residual load is either stored in the battery to be used later or is supplied by the energy stored previously. The strategy was tested over seven days in a real-scale VRF battery to assess the validity of this battery to implement BIPV-focused energy management strategies. The results show that it was possible to obtain a self-consumption ratio of 100.0%, and that 75.6% of the energy consumed was provided by PV power. The VRFB was able to perform the strategy, although it was noticed that the available power (either to charge or discharge) varied with the state of charge
Energy systems for transportation technologies
Mestrado em Engenharia MecânicaThe objective of the work developed in this master thesis is to implement in one system for the transport people in underdeveloped mountainous regions in Nepal. This is based on the idea of Asso. Prof. of Physics Lok Bahadur Baral from Tribhuvan University in
Kathmandu (Nepal), who started to develop a gravitational potential energy for transportation.
His work was conducted under supervision of Prof. Kartnig at the Department of Engineering Design for Transport and Conveying Systems at Vienna University of Technology in collaboration with Tribhuvan University.
This part of the project is to develop the power supply for the infrastructure created by David Guerrero in his bachelor thesis.
The infrastructure is already designed to receive one engine that will give the power
necessary for this to be successfully accomplished. For the engine to work we have to have some energy supply in our system, that energy requirement will originate from a variation of renewable energy technologies
