Flourishing workplaces: a multisensory approach to design and POE
How can we design workplaces which occupants thrive in, which are functional but are also expressive? Drawing on research about the senses and office related studies this paper demonstrates how buildings can be designed to allow for positive multi-sensory experiences. In order to design a creative and productive workplace, it is essential to consider how the environment is making us feel, behave and act within it. As the workplace continues to evolve, the case is made for a sensory palette framework to drive a systems approach to building environmental design enabling the integration of the multi-modal sensory relationship of people’s reactions within various environmental settings. Technological advances, in the form of wearables that monitor our physiological and stress responses offer the opportunity to capture empirical data, further enabling the investigation to see how a diverse range of environmental settings affect our physical, mental and social wellbeing. The paper goes on to develop the established conceptual theories of ‘Flourish’ proposing a move beyond comfort when designing the interiors and the mechanics of facility controls towards a sensory impacts framework that considers a whole life costing approach using the Flourish Model sets the basis for a design and post-occupancy evaluation toolkit

The role of clothing in thermal comfort: how people dress in a temperate and humid climate in Brazil
Abstract Thermal insulation from clothing is one of the most important input variables used to predict the thermal comfort of a building's occupants. This paper investigates the clothing pattern in buildings with different configurations located in a temperate and humid climate in Brazil. Occupants of two kinds of buildings (three offices and two university classrooms) assessed their thermal environment through 'right-here-right-now' questionnaires, while at the same time indoor climatic measurements were carried out in situ (air temperature and radiant temperature, air speed and humidity). A total of 5,036 votes from 1,161 occupants were collected. Results suggest that the clothing values adopted by occupants inside buildings were influenced by: 1) climate and seasons of the year; 2) different configurations and indoor thermal conditions; and 3) occupants' age and gender. Significant intergenerational and gender differences were found, which might be explained by differences in metabolic rates and fashion. The results also indicate that there is a great opportunity to exceed the clothing interval of the thermal comfort zones proposed by international standards such as ASHRAE 55 (2013) - 0.5 to 1.0 clo - and thereby save energy from cooling and heating systems, without compromising the occupants' indoor thermal comfort
Induction of lymphokine-activated killer activity in rat splenocyte cultures: The importance of 2-mercaptoethanol and indomethacin
The role of 2-mercaptoethanol and indomethacin in the induction of lymphokine-activated killer (LAK) activity by interleukin-2 (IL-2) in rat splenocyte cultures was investigated. Spleens from 4-month-old male rats of five different strains were tested. Splenocytes were cultured for 3-5 days in the presence of IL-2 (1000 U/ml) and LAK activity was assessed by 4-h51Cr release assays with P815 and YAC-1 cells as targets. LAK activity could be induced by IL-2 in splenocytes from all rat strains, but only when 2-mercaptoethanol was present in the culture medium. Optimal LAK activity was induced when the 2-mercaptoethanol concentration in splenocyte cultures was at least 5 μM. Different rat strains showed differences in levels of in vitro induction of LAK activity. In the presence of 2-mercaptoethanol the level of LAK activity induced by IL-2 was high in BN and Lewis rats, intermediate in Wistar and Wag rats, and low in DZB rats. In the absence of 2-mercaptoethanol no or minimal LAK activity was induced. Furthermore we observed that addition of 50 μm indomethacin to the culture medium in the presence of 2-mercaptoethanol augmented the induction of LAK activity to some extent. In the absence of 2-mercaptoethanol, addition of indomethacin resulted only in low levels or no induction of LAK activity. We conclude that for optimal induction of LAK activity by IL-2 in rat splenocyte cultures 2-mercaptoethanol is essential, while indomethacin can only marginally further improve this induction

Creative and productive workplaces: a review
The built environment affects our well-being and this in turn influences our effectiveness in the workplace. Poor environments contribute to absenteeism and to people not working as well as they might. This is an enormous cost to the nation. High-quality environmental design is an investment, as occupants are healthier, staff-retention rates are higher, productivity is higher and sustainability ideals are more likely to be met. Workplaces reflect the culture of companies and are places that are not just functional and convenient but give the occupant a wholesome experience in terms of body and spirit
C-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) isoforms play differing roles in otitis media
BACKGROUND: Innate immunity and tissue proliferation play important roles in otitis media (OM), the most common disease of childhood. CJUN terminal kinase (JNK) is potentially involved in both processes. RESULTS: Genes involved in both innate immune and growth factor activation of JNK are upregulated during OM, while expression of both positive and negative JNK regulatory genes is altered. When compared to wildtypes (WTs), C57BL/6 mice deficient in JNK1 exhibit enhanced mucosal thickening, with delayed recovery, enhanced neutrophil recruitment early in OM, and delayed bacterial clearance. In contrast, JNK2(−/−) mice exhibit delayed mucosal hyperplasia that eventually exceeds that of WTs and is slow to recover, delayed recruitment of neutrophils, and failure of bacterial clearance. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that JNK1 and JNK2 play primarily opposing roles in mucosal hyperplasia and neutrophil recruitment early in OM. However, both isoforms are required for the normal resolution of middle ear infection.
