A V-Diagram for the Design of Integrated Health Management for Unmanned Aerial Systems
Designing Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) is inherently complex. UAS are a system of systems (SoS) and IVHM is a product-service, thus the designer has to take into account many factors, such as: the design of the other systems of the UAS (e.g. engines, structure, communications), the split of functions between elements of the UAS, the intended operation/mission of the UAS, the cost verses benefit of monitoring a system/component/part, different techniques for monitoring the health of the UAS, optimizing the health of the fleet and not just the individual UAS, amongst others. The design of IVHM cannot sit alongside, or after, the design of UAS, but itself be integrated into the overall design to maximize IVHM’s potential.
Many different methods exist to help design complex products and manage the process. One method used is the V-diagram which is based on three concepts: decomposition & definition; integration & testing; and verification & validation. This paper adapts the V-diagram so that it can be used for designing IVHM for UAS. The adapted v-diagram splits into different tracks for the different system elements of the UAS and responses to health states (decomposition and definition). These tracks are then combined into an overall IVHM provision for the UAS (integration and testing), which can be verified and validated. The stages of the adapted V-diagram can easily be aligned with the stages of the V-diagram being used to design the UAS bringing the design of the IVHM in step with the overall design process. The adapted V-diagram also allows the design IVHM for a UAS to be broken down in to smaller tasks which can be assigned to people/teams with the relevant competencies. The adapted V-diagram could also be used to design IVHM for other SoS and other vehicles or products
Inversion formula and Parsval theorem for complex continuous wavelet transforms studied by entangled state representation
In a preceding Letter (Opt. Lett. 32, 554 (2007)) we have proposed complex
continuous wavelet transforms (CCWTs) and found Laguerre--Gaussian mother
wavelets family. In this work we present the inversion formula and Parsval
theorem for CCWT by virtue of the entangled state representation, which makes
the CCWT theory complete. A new orthogonal property of mother wavelet in

Into the central 10 pc of the most distant known radio quasar. VLBI imaging observations of J1429+5447 at z=6.21
Context: There are about 60 quasars known at redshifts z>5.7 to date. Only
three of them are detected in the radio above 1 mJy flux density at 1.4 GHz
frequency. Among them, J1429+5447 (z=6.21) is the highest-redshift radio quasar
known at present. These rare, distant, and powerful objects provide important
insight into the activity of the supermassive black holes in the Universe at
early cosmological epochs, and on the physical conditions in their environment.
Aims: We studied the compact radio structure of J1429+5447 on the
milli-arcsecond (mas) angular scale, in order to compare the structural and
spectral properties with those of other two z~6 radio-loud quasars, J0836+0054
(z=5.77) and J1427+3312 (z=6.12). Methods: We performed Very Long Baseline
Interferometry (VLBI) imaging observations of J1429+5447 with the European VLBI
Network (EVN) at 1.6 GHz on 2010 June 8, and at 5 GHz on 2010 May 27. Results:
Based on its observed radio properties, the compact but somewhat resolved
structure on linear scales of <100 pc, and the steep spectrum, the quasar
J1429+5447 is remarkably similar to J0836+0054 and J1427+3312. To answer the
question whether the compact steep-spectrum radio emission is a "universal"
feature of the most distant radio quasars, it is essential to study more, yet
to be discovered radio-loud active galactic nuclei at z>6.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication as a Letter to the

The ground state of a mixture of two species of fermionic atoms in 1D optical lattice
In this paper, we investigate the ground state properties of a mixture of two
species of fermionic atoms in one-dimensional optical lattice, as described by
the asymmetric Hubbard model. The quantum phase transition from density wave to
phase separation is investigated by studying both the corresponding charge
order parameter and quantum entanglement. A rigorous proof that even for the
single hole doping case, the density wave is unstable to the phase separation
in the infinite U limit, is given. Therefore, our results are quite instructive
for both on-going experiments on strongly correlated cold-atomic systems and

Entanglement in a Valence-Bond-Solid State
We study entanglement in Valence-Bond-Solid state. It describes the ground
state of Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb and Tasaki quantum spin chain. The AKLT model
has a gap and open boundary conditions. We calculate an entropy of a subsystem
(continuous block of spins). It quantifies the entanglement of this block with
the rest of the ground state. We prove that the entanglement approaches a
constant value exponentially fast as the size of the subsystem increases.
Actually we proved that the density matrix of the continuous block of spins
depends only on the length of the block, but not on the total size of the chain
[distance to the ends also not essential]. We also study reduced density
matrices of two spins both in the bulk and on the boundary. We evaluated

Solution heat treatment, forming and in-die quenching of a commercial sheet magnesium alloy into a complex-shaped component: experimentation and FE analysis
Interest in lightweight materials, particularly magnesium alloys, has increased significantly with rising efficiency requirements in the automotive sector. Magnesium is the lightest available structural metal, with a density approximately 35% lower than that of aluminium. The potential is great for magnesium to become a primary material used in future low carbon vehicle structures; however, there are significant obstacles, namely low ductility and formability, particularly at room temperature. The aim of this work is to present the feasibility of using the solution Heat treatment, Forming, and in-die Quenching (HFQ) process to produce complex shapes from a sheet magnesium alloy, and to use the results to verify a simulation of the process developed using commercial FE software. Uniaxial tensile tests were initially conducted to establish the optimum parameters for forming the part. Stamping trials were then carried out using these parameters, and a simulation set up modelling the forming operation. Passenger transmission and productiveness of transit lines with high loads
Deterministic transit capacity analysis applies to planning, design and operational management of urban transit systems. The Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual (1) and Vuchic (2, 3) enable transit performance to be quantified and assessed using transit capacity and productive capacity. This paper further defines important productive performance measures of an individual transit service and transit line. Transit work (p-km) captures the transit task performed over distance. Passenger transmission (p-km/h) captures the passenger task delivered by service at speed. Transit productiveness (p-km/h) captures transit work performed over time. These measures are useful to operators in understanding their services’ or systems’ capabilities and passenger quality of service. This paper accounts for variability in utilized demand by passengers along a line and high passenger load conditions where passenger pass-up delay occurs. A hypothetical case study of an individual bus service’s operation demonstrates the usefulness of passenger transmission in comparing existing and growth scenarios. A hypothetical case study of a bus line’s operation during a peak hour window demonstrates the theory’s usefulness in examining the contribution of individual services to line productive performance. Scenarios may be assessed using this theory to benchmark or compare lines and segments, conditions, or consider improvements
Refinement of primary Si in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys by intensive melt shearing
Hypereutectic Al-Si based alloys are gaining popularity for applications where a combination of light weight and high wear resistance is required. The high wear resistance arising from the hard primary Si particles comes at the price of extremely poor machine tool life. To minimize machining problems while exploiting outstanding wear resistance, the primary Si particles must be controlled to a uniform small size and uniform spatial distribution. The current industrial means of refining primary Si chemically by the addition of phosphorous suffers from a number of problems. In the present paper an alternative, physical means of refining primary Si by intensive shearing of the melt prior to casting is investigated. Al-15wt%Si alloy has been solidified under varying casting conditions (cooling rate) and the resulting microstructures have been studied using microscopy and quantitative image analysis. Primary Si particles were finer, more compact in shape and more numerous with increasing cooling rate. Intensive melt shearing led to greater refinement and more enhanced nucleation of primary Si than was achieved by adding phosphorous. Experimental realization of a low-noise heralded single photon source
We present a heralded single-photon source with a much lower level of
unwanted background photons in the output channel by using the herald photon to
control a shutter in the heralded channel. The shutter is implemented using a

Optical properties of V2O3 in its whole phase diagram
Vanadium sesquioxide V2O3 is considered a textbook example of Mott-Hubbard
physics. In this paper we present an extended optical study of its whole
temperature/doping phase diagram as obtained by doping the pure material with
M=Cr or Ti atoms (V1-xMx)2O3. We reveal that its thermodynamically stable
metallic and insulating phases, although macroscopically equivalent, show very
different low-energy electrodynamics. The Cr and Ti doping drastically change
both the antiferromagnetic gap and the paramagnetic metallic properties. A
slight chromium content induces a mesoscopic electronic phase separation, while
the pure compound is characterized by short-lived quasiparticles at high
temperature. This study thus provides a new comprehensive scenario of the
Mott-Hubbard physics in the prototype compound V2O3
