Holocene-Neogene volcanism in northeastern Australia: chronology and eruption history
Quaternary and late Neogene volcanism is widespread in northeastern Australia, producing at least 397 eruptions covering more than 20,000 km2, including at least 20 flows over 50 km long. Despite this abundance of young volcanism, before this study numerous eruptions had tentative ages or were undated, and the area requires a comprehensive evaluation of eruption patterns through time. To help address these issues we applied multi-collector ARGUS-V 40Ar/39Ar geochronology to determine the age of four of the younger extensive flows: Undara (160 km long, 189 ± 4/4 ka; 2Ï, with full analytical/external uncertainties), Murronga (40 km long, 153 ± 5/5 ka), Toomba (120 km long, 21 ± 3/3 ka), and Kinrara (55 km long, 7 ± 2/2 ka). Verbal traditions of the Gugu Badhun Aboriginal people contain features that may potentially describe the eruption of Kinrara. If the traditions do record this eruption, they would have been passed down for 230 ± 70 generations â a period of time exceeding the earliest written historical records. To further examine north Queensland volcanism through time we compiled a database of 337 ages, including 179 previously unpublished K-Ar and radiocarbon results. The compiled ages demonstrate that volcanic activity has occurred without major time breaks since at least 9 Ma. The greatest frequency of eruptions occurred in the last 2 Ma, with an average recurrence interval of <10â22 ka between eruptions. Activity was at times likely more frequent than these calculations indicate, as the geochronologic dataset is incomplete, with undated eruptions, and intraplate volcanism is often episodic. The duration, frequency, and youthfulness of activity indicate that north Queensland volcanism should be considered as potentially still active, and there are now two confirmed areas of Holocene volcanism in eastern Australia â one at each end of the continent. More broadly, our data provides another example of 40Ar/39Ar geochronology applied to Holocene and latest Pleistocene mafic eruptions, further demonstrating that this method has the ability to examine eruptions and hazards at the youngest volcanoes on Earth

Creating, executing, and assessing a staff development program on developmental reading instruction strategies in the social studies content area in an urban junior senior high school.
This study documented the process of creating, executing, and assessing, a cost-effective, school based, researcher conducted staff development program which included one African American seventh grade social studies faculty member, one European American tenth grade faculty member, and one European American Chapter I reading teacher, at Roosevelt Junior Senior High School, Roosevelt, New York, during the 1989-1990 school year. The objective was to obtain more information about increasing school effectiveness in low income school districts. Staff development efforts were aimed at broadening faculty members\u27 preparedness in developing reading instruction strategies used in the content area of social studies, which conform more concisely with urban African American students\u27 range of reading levels in three homogeneously grouped classes. The goals of (a) improving students\u27 academic performance, (b) attending to individual needs, and (c) providing the tools needed to control learning, are addressed. Five collaboratively designed staff development workshops on developmental reading instruction strategies in the social studies content area enabled members of the faculty to: (a) reevaluate perceptions of teaching reading in the social studies classroom, (b) develop the techniques needed to enable students to independently evaluate the many types of printed material, and, (c) professionally incorporate a concern for teaching the what of content, and how the student may obtain the content. Informal and formal discussions, realization of self-concepts, interests, attitudes, completion of evaluations, diagnosis and prescription, conferencing, and observations, led the researcher to the determination that members of the faculty: (a) developed a unified strategy for teaching students how to read their social studies texts with fluency and efficiency, (b) collaboratively planned lessons stressing reading skills without loss of social studies content, (c) realized that content was naturally acquired as a result of improved reading skills, (d) regarded the process of reading as a necessary component in the curriculum, a skill that opens the door to higher level thinking, and, (e) viewed reading not as an isolated skill but rather as a means of enhancing and enriching the social studies curriculum. The students in this study: (a) demonstrated improved reading skills, for example, increased levels of comprehension, (b) learned how their textbook was organized and how to make the best use of all its parts, (c) increased their vocabulary, (d) obtained a better idea of their own interests in social studies, and, (e) acquired techniques to improve study skills which included taking notes and studying for and taking tests. Indications of increased school effectiveness imply that staff development is practical in low income school districts where there is evidence of a corroborative Board of Education, administrative team, faculty, and curriculum and instructional designers

Application of NASTRAN/COSMIC in the analysis of ship structures to underwater explosion shock
The application of NASTRAN/COSMIC in predicting the transient motion of ship structures to underwater, non-contact explosions is discussed. Examples illustrate the finite element models, mathematical formulations of loading functions and, where available, comparisons between analytical and experimental results
A Case of Intramural Coronary Amyloidosis Associated With Hemodialysis
Dialysis-related amyloidosis predominantly occurs in osteo-articular structures and dialysis-related amyloid (DRA) substances also deposit in extra-articular tissues. Clinical manifestations of DRA include odynophagia, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, intestinal obstruction, kidney stones, myocardial dysfunction, and subcutaneous tumors. The pathological characteristics of DRA in the heart of hemodialysis patients have rarely been reported. We report the case of a 73-year-old female with a history of cerebral palsy and end-stage renal disease status post two failed renal transplants who had been on hemodialysis for 30 years. The patient was admitted with the working diagnosis of pneumonia. An echocardiography showed markedly reduced biventricular function manifested by low blood pressure with systolic in the 70s and elevated pulmonary artery pressure of 45 mmHg, which did not respond to therapy. Following her demise, the autopsy revealed bilateral pulmonary edema and pleural effusions. There was cardiac amyloid deposition exclusively in the coronary arteries but not in the perimyocytic interstitium. Amyloids were also found in pulmonary and intrarenal arteries and the colon wall. Previous case reports showed that beta 2-microglobulin amyloid deposits in various visceral organs but less frequently in the atrial and/or the ventricular myocardium. In the present case, amyloids in the heart were present in the intramural coronary arteries causing myocardial ischemia and infarction, which was the immediate cause of death

Future of the NOSAMS Tandetron AMS system

A critical
review of all aspects of the system is necessary to assess the analytical, economic, and operational factors that
enter into the consideration of either an upgrade or a replacement of the instrument. Recent inâhouse experience
with the design and construction of a largeâacceptance 14C AMS system gives us a benchmark with which to
compare the expected outcome of an upgrade. The present ion analysis efficiency of our Tandetron system is
roughly 1%, well below the 4% value of our new system. This affects the lower limit of analyzable sample size,
speed of analysis, exposure to systematic errors, and the upper limit of achievable singleâsample counting
statistics. At first glance it may seem obvious that a replacement (even at higher cost) would be preferable to an
upgrade. However, it will be shown that there are good reasons to consider the latter. One of the most compelling
is the fact that the Tandetron is a stateâofâtheâart and superior highâcurrent accelerator design with minimal signs
of aging and very low maintenance. Ion beam modeling calculations show that the main transmission limitation of
the instrument is caused by the design of our injector, a fourâmagnet âRecombinatorâ, making it difficult to
perform reliable AMS with negative currents exceeding 80 ÎŒA. To be acceptable, an upgrade should bring the
Tandetron to at least 3% ion efficiency by replacing the injector with a properly matched highâtransmission device. This work has been supported by the United States National Science Foundation under

Deep-red electrophosphorescence from a platinum(II)âporphyrin complex copolymerised with polyfluorene for efficient energy transfer and triplet harvesting
A series of polyfluorene-based polymers with a range of weight percentages (w/w) of a platinum(II)-containing porphyrin, 5,15-dimesityl-10,20-diphenylporphyrinato platinum(II) (MPP(Pt)), were synthesised and incorporated into organic light-emitting diodes. All polymers showed emission predominantly in the red/NIR region with only those polymers with porphyrin w/w of less than 2% showing residual tails at wavelengths lower than 600ânm, indicating increased emission from the porphyrin as w/w increases. The 2% loading of MPP(Pt) gave the highest efficiency LED (0.48%) and light output (2630âmW/m2)
Reduced ventilation and enhanced magnitude of the deep Pacific carbon pool during the last glacial period
It has been proposed that the ventilation of the deep Pacific carbon pool was not significantly reduced during the last glacial period, posing a problem for canonical theories of glacialâinterglacial CO2 change. However, using radiocarbon dates of marine tephra deposited off New Zealand, we show that deep- (>2000 m>2000 m) and shallow sub-surface oceanâatmosphere 14C age offsets (i.e. âreservoir-â or âventilationâ ages) in the southwest Pacific increased by âŒ1089 and 337 yrs respectively, reaching âŒ2689 and âŒ1037 yrs during the late glacial. A comparison with other radiocarbon data from the southern high-latitudes suggests that broadly similar changes were experienced right across the Southern Ocean. If, like today, the Southern Ocean was the main source of water to the glacial ocean interior, these observations would imply a significant change in the global radiocarbon inventory during the last glacial period, possibly equivalent to an increase in the average radiocarbon age >2 km>2 km of âŒ700 yrsâŒ700 yrs. Simple mass balance arguments and numerical model sensitivity tests suggest that such a change in the ocean's mean radiocarbon age would have had a major impact on the marine carbon inventory and atmospheric CO2, possibly accounting for nearly half of the glacialâinterglacial CO2 change. If confirmed, these findings would underline the special role of high latitude shallow sub-surface mixing and airâsea gas exchange in regulating atmospheric CO2 during the late Pleistocene. This work was supported by the Royal Society, through a University Research Fellowship granted to LCS, and by NERC grant NE/L006421/1.This is the final published version.
