    A reconceptualization of anxiety

    Get PDF
The aim of the thesis is three fold: a-To develop a new questionnaire that measures anxiety in terms of four components (feeling, cognitive, behavior and somatic). b-To investigate the relationship between feeling and cognition with regard to anxiety. c-To identify, with the application of Three Systems Theory, the most salient component of anxiety in each of the DSM-III anxiety disorder sub-classifications and to evaluate the validity of DSM-III anxiety disorder sub-classifications. a-In order to assess the level of anxiety, I have developed a new Four Systems Anxiety Questionnaire (FSAQ). FSAQ incorporates a feeling component along with the behavioral, somatic and cognitive components. A psychometric evaluation (reliability and validity levels) of the questionnaire was found to be satisfactory. b-Another aim is to reconsider one of the tenets of cognitive therapy that cognitive appraisals are the necessary preconditions for the emergence of feeling. Such a view assumes that feeling is merely an epiphenomenon of cognitive processes. This research establishes, however, that feeling and cognition appear to be relatively independent systems and that their modes of interaction are influenced by the personality structure of the individual. This conclusion was obtained by using the FSAQ on university students and various categories of anxiety patients. In particular, the research compared the scores on the feeling and cognitive components of both males and females, obsessive-compulsives and rest of the DSM-III anxiety patients. c- A further aim of the reseach was to examine the DSM-III anxiety disorders classification from the Three Systems Theory's point of view. The Three Systems Theory proposes that anxiety has three relatively independent components: cognitive, behavioral and somatic. In the various anxiety sub-classifications of DSM-III one or other of these three components dominates. The other purpose of my research was to consider each of the DSM-III anxiety disorders separately and to determine which of the three components plays the major role in the manifestation of the particular syndrome. In general, the results indicate that each anxiety disorder is indeed characterised by a different profile. An anticipated outcome of this research is that a clinician will be able to identify the main component of anxiety in a particular syndrome and hence select most appropriate treatment. The results of this study support DSM-III classification of anxiety disorders into two main categories of phobic and non-phobic (i.e. phobic and anxiety states)

Surfactants, Thermal And Surface Energy Effects On Emulsions’ Transport Properties: A Study Using Lattice Boltzmann Method

    Get PDF
This work aims to provide an efficient Gunstensen LBM based CFD model, capable of solving complex problems related to droplets behavior in shear and parabolic flows. Thermal conditions determine the outcome of the physical and transport properties of emulsions during their various processing phases. A better understanding of the intricate relationship between thermal, surfactants and hydrodynamics can help in the optimization of these processes during the production of emulsions. To investigate the outcome of coupling thermal, surfactants and hydrodynamics on emulsions behavior, a robust quasi-steady thermal-surfactants numerical scheme is presented and used here. To validate the model, the rheological behavior of oil-in-water system was investigated. The numerical results matched well the experimental results of the similar oil-in-water system under steady-state thermal conditions. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed numerical model can handle cases with transient thermal conditions while maintaining good accuracy. The model has been improved to study the combined effects of temperature, and contact angle on the movement of slugs and droplets of oil in water (O/W) system flowing between two parallel plates and in 3D confined flow study. This is found in the enhanced oil recovery technique which includes thermal, contact angle and surfactant effects for breaking up trapped crude oil. The model static contact angle due to the deposition of the O/W droplet on a flat surface with simulated hydrophilic characteristic at different fluid temperatures, matched very well the proposed theoretical calculation. Furthermore, the model was used to simulate the dynamic behavior of droplets and slugs deposited on the domain\u27s upper and lower surfaces, while subjected to parabolic flow conditions. The model accurately simulated the contact angle hysteresis for the dynamic droplets cases. It was also shown that at elevated temperatures the required power to transport the mixture diminished remarkably. The aim is to improve our understanding of the underlying physics associated with the secondary and tertiary extraction process of trapped crude oil in wells by injecting hot water. Finally, the model was utilized for the investigation of the flow behavior of O/W emulsions with the goal of delineating the best practices for transporting these emulsions in circular ducts. The effects of temperature, volume fraction, flow pressure gradient, and surfactants concentration are investigated in a Poiseuille flow setup. A dimensionless power number ratio was introduced and successfully used for guiding the selection of the most cost-efficient means for transporting O/W emulsion

Case Study: Desert Storm And The Entrepreneurial Spirit

    Get PDF
This case is appropriate for any college level entrepreneurial class.  The purpose of this case study is to explore the business experience of an Iraqi entrepreneur, and share it with the community of entrepreneurs worldwide. The paper traces the journey of Mr. Sammy Awad, the entrepreneur, from the 1991 Gulf war to the fall of Baghdad to Coalition Forces in 2003. The Gulf war caused widespread devastation to the Iraqi economy, and large scale unemployment. On the other hand, the war created lucrative market opportunities for entrepreneurs, including Mr. Awad who, in a few years time was capable of moving from being a conscript in the Iraqi armed forces with a trivial salary, to a taxicab driver, and finally to an owner of a fleet of taxicabs. His stamina, determination, and foresight make him a role model for young entrepreneurs around the world

The effects of ischaemia and denervation on mammalian muscle spindles

    Get PDF
The effects of ischaemia and denervation on rat muscle spindles have been investigated in a series of experiments in which the soleus muscle was either devascularized, or denervated, or devascularized and denervated at the same time. The structure of the experimental spindles was observed with the electron microscope at various postoperative periods. Soleus muscle is revascularized 5 days after sectioning its supplying blood vessels. The temporary ischaemia thus produced results in the rapid concomitant degeneration of both extrafusal and intrafusal muscle fibres as well as their nerve terminals and supplying axons. The basal lamina of the intrafusal fibres remains intact and necrotic debris is removed by phagocytic cells. Satellite cells survive the temporary ischaemia, giving rise to numerous myoblasts within the basal-lamina tubes. The myoblasts fuse to form myotubes\which, by the 14th day after devascularization, are maturing into thin muscle fibres, in the absence of any innervation. Reinnervation of the regenerating spindle begins 21 days after devascularisation and is completed some 7 days later, during which time further differentiation of reinnervated intrafusal fibres occurs. Regenerated spindles vary considerably with respect to the extent of their sensory and motor innervation and equatorial nucleation and the reasons for this variation are discussed. Most regenerated ischaemic spindles and denervated spindles contain short, thin additional muscle fibres, the sources of which are also discussed. The degeneration and regeneration of ischaemic muscle spindles are not affected by sectioning the muscle nerve at the time of devascularization. Differences are only seen at the later post- operative stages when further differentiation of the intrafusal fibres does not occur, presumably because of the absence of reinnervating axon terminals. Instead, signs of denervation atrophy are seen in non-innervated regenerated ischaemic spindles. In contrast to the rapid effects of devascularization, denervation results in a slow atrophy of intrafusal fibres. Equatorial nuclei are replaced by myofibrils. As long as one year after denervation only focal atrophy of intrafusal fibres is evident, contrasting markedly with the widespread extensive atrophy of extrafusal fibres. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to other experimental studies of the regeneration or reinnervation of muscle spindles. Their possible clinical application in nerve and muscle repair is also highlighted
