Normal Heat Conduction in a Chain with Weak Interparticle Anharmonic Potential
We analytically study heat conduction in a chain with interparticle
interaction V(x)=lambda[1-cos(x)] and harmonic on-site potential. We start with
each site of the system connected to a Langevin heat bath, and investigate the
case of small coupling for the interior sites in order to understand the
behavior of the system with thermal reservoirs at the boundaries only. We
study, in a perturbative analysis, the heat current in the steady state of the
one-dimensional system with weak interparticle potential. We obtain an
expression for the thermal conductivity, compare the low and high temperature
regimes, and show that, as we turn off the couplings with the interior heat
baths, there is a "phase transition:'' the Fourier's law holds only at high
temperatures
A checklist of chromosome numbers and karyotypes of Amazonian freshwater fishes
Portable parallel kernels for high-speed beamforming in synthetic aperture ultrasound imaging
In medical ultrasound, synthetic aperture (SA) imaging is well-considered as a novel image formation technique for achieving superior resolution than that offered by existing scanners. However, its intensive processing load is known to be a challenging factor. To address such a computational demand, this paper proposes a new parallel approach based on the design of OpenCL signal processing kernels that can compute SA image formation in real-time. We demonstrate how these kernels can be ported onto different classes of parallel processors, namely multi-core CPUs and GPUs, whose multi-thread computing resources are able to process more than 250 fps. Moreover, they have strong potential to support the development of more complex algorithms, thus increasing the depth range of the inspected human volume and the final image resolution observed by the medical practitioner.published_or_final_versio
On the Evaluation of Energy-Efficient Deep Learning Using Stacked Autoencoders on Mobile GPUs
Over the last years, deep learning architectures have
gained attention by winning important international detection
and classification challenges. However, due to high levels of
energy consumption, the need to use low-power devices at
acceptable throughput performance is higher than ever. This
paper tries to solve this problem by introducing energy efficient
deep learning based on local training and using low-power mobile
GPU parallel architectures, all conveniently supported by the
same high-level description of the deep network. Also, it proposes
to discover the maximum dimensions that a particular type
of deep learning architecture—the stacked autoencoder—can
support by finding the hardware limitations of a representative
group of mobile GPUs and platforms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
The global energy situation reflects the enormous challenge of meeting the growing energy need with the increased use of renewable energy sources. Given the current dependence on traditional energy sources, and considering the reduced emission of pollutants and the low cost of natural gas, the role of this energy source is crucial in the transition to a cleaner energy scenario. In Portugal, the natural gas system is recent and the trend is towards an increase in consumption. As a result of the liberalisation of the natural gas market, given the need to provide information to consumers and achieve a better relationship with consumption, telemetering systems have emerged. These measurement systems are capable of integrating the collection, processing and transmission of data, and generate a vast set of information useful for analysis. With the amount of generated information, this work aims to optimise the process of obtaining and processing data from telemetry customers of an organisation, promoting the monitoring and automation of the process decision for the purposes of analysis and invoicing. Initially, the study sought to analyse the original process and characterise it regarding the inefficiencies of the implemented validation rules and the overall process failures. It was then necessary to optimise the data flow, and to develop and implement a solution that would enable the daily and constant processing of the data, based on conditions favourable to the availability of reports auxiliary to the decision-making process. Firstly, in order to meet the initial objective, the telemetering and the entire architecture of the measurement system that is inherent to it were contextualised, in order to understand and analyse the original process. Then, derived from the study carried out on data treatment processes, imposed rules and methodologies present in the industry, the flow diagram was prepared and the solution for the tool was established in Microsoft Excel©, using the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) language. With the development of algorithms capable of validating and estimating the data, it was possible to identify validated customers and generate reports that promoted invoicing based on real consumption and anticipation of anomalies. In order to understand the success of the implementation of the tool, the ratio between validated and invalidated customers was calculated. The maximum ratio of 18.42, reached with the current process, compared to the maximum ratio of 3.13, reached with the previous process, allows concluding that the process of obtaining and processing data was optimised

EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTS OF ILLUMINATION, TEMPERATURE AND PAINTING FINISH IN PSP TECHNIQUE
This paper reports the results of global pressure measurements on a NACA0012 profile, obtained with the Pressure Sensitive Paint technique (PSP), and compares them with conventional pressure tap measurements with the purpose of analyzing the influence of parameters as illumination efficiency and temperature variation of the air flow in the accuracy of the PSP experimental results. The experimental measurements were conducted in the Pilot Transonic Wind Tunnel (TTP) of the Instituto de Aeronáutica e Espaço (IAE) for Mach number values of 0.4, 0.6 and 0.8. The experiments showed that in a carefully prepared experiment, under appropriated operational conditions, and rigorous adjustments of the PSP components, the obtained results can be accurate. Moreover, even when the influence of temperature is significant and the illumination condition is not ideal, it was possible to estimate well the impact caused in the pressure distribution over the model surface
