    Biometrical Study of Morphology and Development of the Pennsylvanian Trilobite \u3ci\u3eAmeura sangamonensis\u3c/i\u3e (Meek and Worthen)

    Biometrical study of morphology and development in a sample of 100 cranidia, 94 pygidia, 26 free cheeks, and 9 complete specimens of the trilobite Ameura sangamonensis (Meek and Worthen) from the Bonner Springs Shale (Pennsylvanian; Missouri Series) in eastern Nebraska indicates that the dominant growth pattern was isometric. Evidence supporting this conclusion consists of rectilinear size relations among eight pairs of cranidial dimensions, three pairs of pygidial dimensions, and three pairs of dimensions of the free cheeks. Qualitative changes in pygidial morphology during development include a progressive decrease in prominence of the border, increasing width of the posterior border relative to the lateral borders, and a progressive change in outline from a smoothly rounded semi-circular margin to one that is subtriangular or subparabolic. All the complete specimens in the sample are holaspides. There is some indication of point clustering on scatter diagrams among the smallest cranidia which suggests that the sample may contain a few late meraspides. However, if meraspid cranidia and free cheeks are present, they are morphologically very similar to the small holaspides

    Implementation of advanced practice nursing for minor orthopedic injuries in the emergency care context – a non-inferiority study

    Aims To evaluate the implementation of advanced practice nursing for patients with minor orthopedic injuries, including comparison of outcomes in relation to advanced practice nurse versus standard (physician-led) care models. Design A non-inferiority study was performed in an emergency department in Norway, where advanced practice nursing is in an initial stage of implementation. The non-inferiority design was chosen to test whether the new advanced practice nursing model does not compromise quality of care compared to the standard care model already in use. Methods Patients with minor orthopedic injuries were assessed and treated by either advanced practice nursing or standard (physician-led) care models. Participating patients were assigned to the professional available at presentation. In the nursing model, registered nurses worked at an advanced level/applied advanced practice nursing following in-house-training. Senior orthopedic specialists evaluated the diagnostic and treatment accuracy in both models. Data were collected in a tool developed for this study, from May to October, 2019. Results In total, 335 cases were included, of which 167 (49.9 %) were assessed and treated in the nursing model. Overall, correct diagnosis was found in 97.3 % (n = 326) of the cases, and correct treatment was found in 91.3 % (n = 306) of the cases. In comparison of missed diagnosis between advanced practice nurse and the standard (physician-led) care model showed inconclusive results (risk ratio: 0.29, 95% CI: 0.06-1.36). In comparison of treatment outcomes, the results showed that the advanced practice nursing model was non-inferior (risk ratio: 0.45, 95% CI: 0.21-0.97). Conclusion Advanced practice nursing care models can be used to diagnose and treat minor orthopedic injuries without compromising quality of care. Further implementation of the advanced practice nurse care model is encouraged

    A conserved role for kinesin-5 in plant mitosis

    The mitotic spindle of vascular plants is assembled and maintained by processes that remain poorly explored at a molecular level. Here, we report that AtKRP125c, one of four kinesin-5 motor proteins in arabidopsis, decorates microtubules throughout the cell cycle and appears to function in both interphase and mitosis. In a temperature-sensitive mutant, interphase cortical microtubules are disorganized at the restrictive temperature and mitotic spindles are massively disrupted, consistent with a defect in the stabilization of anti-parallel microtubules in the spindle midzone, as previously described in kinesin-5 mutants from animals and yeast. AtKRP125c introduced into mammalian epithelial cells by transfection decorates microtubules throughout the cell cycle but is unable to complement the loss of the endogenous kinesin-5 motor (Eg5). These results are among the first reports of any motor with a major role in anastral spindle structure in plants and demonstrate that the conservation of kinesin-5 motor function throughout eukaryotes extends to vascular plants

    Cestode Species Identification on Waterfowl: Parasitology Class Project 2022

    Parasites can have a significant effect on an ecosystem if they become too abundant due to the multitude of animals that play a role in their life cycle. This research is a part of a larger class project for BIO 462 identifying parasites that are commonly found in or on waterfowl from around the Winona, Minnesota area. Ducks were donated from hunters and dissected to collect their endo and ectoparasites. Parasite specimens were stained and mounted to look for morphological characteristics that ultimately helped identify the parasites using light microscopy. DNA was extracted from the individual cestodes, and PCR was used to amplify select genes of the DNA. The DNA was then sequenced then compared to other DNA samples in GenBank which determined if the parasites was already classified or if a new species was found. More specimens will be processed to obtain additional results and obtain proper identification. These findings could help identify not only what parasites are common in certain species of ducks, but also provide additional information to the abundance of parasites within waterfowl in our local area

    Palaeobiology, ecology, and distribution of stromatoporoid faunas in biostromes of the mid-Ludlow of Gotland

    Six well exposed mid−Ludlow stromatoporoid−dominated reef biostromes in four localities from the Hemse Group in southeastern Gotland, Sweden comprise a stromatoporoid assemblage dominated by four species; Clathrodictyon mohicanum, “Stromatopora” bekkeri, Plectostroma scaniense, and Lophiostroma schmidtii. All biostromes investigated in this area (of approximately 30 km2) are interpreted to belong to a single faunal assemblage forming a dense accumulation of fossils that is probably the best exposed stromatoporoid−rich deposit of the Silurian. The results from this comprehensive study strengthen earlier interpretations of a combination of genetic and environmental control on growth−forms of the stromatoporoids. Growth styles are similar for stromatoporoids in all six biostromes. Differences in biostrome fabric are due to variations in the degree of disturbance by storms. The uniformity of facies and the widespread low−diversity fauna support the view that palaeoenvironmental conditions were similar across the area where these biostromes crop out, and promoted the extraordinary growth of stromatoporoids in this shallow shelf area

    Fagerstrom test for nicotine dependence vs heavy smoking index in a general population survey

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) is used for assessing nicotine dependence. A shorter test derived from the FTND used for the general population is the Heavy Smoking Index (HSI) (six questions vs. two). The objective of this study is to compare the validity of the HSI versus the FTND.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A survey of tobacco use in the general population was carried out in the northern Spanish region of Galicia using both the FTND and the HSI to study a representative sample of 1655 daily smokers. The HSI was compared with the FTND, considered the gold standard. Measures of sensitivity, specificity and predictive values were calculated. Concordance between the tests was also established (Cohen's kappa).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Cohen's kappa showed good agreement between measures (Kappa = 0.7); specificity values were also high (Sp = 96.2%). Sensitivity analysis in females (Se = 62.3%) did not show good agreement.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The HSI can be used as a reasonably good screening test in order to identify daily smokers with high nicotine dependence. Nevertheless, for populations or subpopulations having low nicotine dependence, such as women, the FTND is more reliable.</p

    The TURis System for Transurethral Resection of the Prostate: A NICE Medical Technology Guidance

    The transurethral resection in saline (TURis) system was notified by the company Olympus Medical to the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence’s (NICE’s) Medical Technologies Evaluation Programme. Following selection for medical technologies guidance, the company developed a submission of clinical and economic evidence for evaluation. TURis is a bipolar surgical system for treating men with lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic enlargement. The comparator is any monopolar transurethral resection of the prostate (mTURP) system. Cedar, a collaboration between Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Cardiff University and Swansea University in the UK, acted as an External Assessment Centre (EAC) for NICE to independently critique the company’s submission of evidence. Eight randomised trials provided evidence for TURis, demonstrating efficacy equivalent to that of mTURP for improvement of symptoms. The company presented meta-analyses of key outcome measures, and the EAC made methodological modifications in response to the heterogeneity of the trial data. The EAC analysis found that TURis substantially reduced the relative risks of transurethral resection syndrome (relative risk 0.18 [95 % confidence interval 0.05–0.62]) and blood transfusion (relative risk 0.35 [95 % confidence interval 0.19–0.65]). The company provided a de novo economic model comparing TURis with mTURP. The EAC critiqued the model methodology and made modifications. This found TURis to be cost saving at £70.55 per case for existing Olympus customers and cost incurring at £19.80 per case for non-Olympus customers. When an additional scenario based on the only available data on readmission (due to any cause) from a single trial was modelled, the estimated cost saving per case was £375.02 for existing users of Olympus electrosurgery equipment and £284.66 per case when new Olympus equipment would need to be purchased. Meta-analysis of eight randomised trials showed that TURis is associated with a statistically significantly reduced risk of transurethral resection syndrome and a reduced need for blood transfusion—two factors that may drive cost saving for the National Health Service. The clinical data are equivocal as to whether TURis shortens the hospital stay. Limited data from a single study suggest that TURis may reduce the rate of readmission after surgery. The NICE guidance supports adoption of the TURis technology for performing transurethral resection of the prostate in men with lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic enlargemen

    Sibling bullying at 12 years and high-risk behavior in early adulthood : a prospective cohort study

    Emerging evidence suggests that sibling aggression is associated with the development of high‐risk behavior. This study investigated the relationship between sibling bullying perpetration and victimization in early adolescence and high‐risk behavior in early adulthood. Sibling bullying was assessed at 12 years in 6,988 individuals from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, a birth cohort based in the UK and high‐risk behavioral outcomes were assessed at 18–20 years. Frequent sibling bullying perpetration predicted antisocial behavior (OR = 1.74; 95%CI, 1.38–2.20), while frequent sibling bullying victimization increased the odds of nicotine dependence (OR = 2.87; 95%CI, 1.55–5.29), even after accounting for peer bullying and parent maltreatment. Categorical analysis revealed that particularly bullies and bully‐victims were at risk of developing high‐risk behavior. Finally, this study found that adolescents who were involved in bullying perpetration across multiple contexts (home and school) had the highest odds of reporting antisocial behavior (OR = 3.05; 95%CI, 2.09–4.44), criminal involvement (OR = 2.12; 95%CI, 1.23–3.66), and illicit drug use (OR = 2.11; 95%CI, 1.44–3.08). Findings from this study suggest that sibling bullying perpetration may be a marker of or a contributory factor along the developmental trajectory to antisocial behavior problems. Intervention studies are needed in order to test whether reducing sibling bullying can alleviate long‐term adverse social and behavioral outcomes
