Automatic Translation and Wordplay: An Amateurâs (Playful) Thoughts
While translating/adapting wordplay is certainly not, for the time being, within the reach of
machine translation (be it knowledge-based, statistical or neural), the same may hold true for
quite a few human translators as well. In my contribution, I invite readers to take part in a sort
of homemade Turing test, by asking them to uncover the translations of three open access MT
systems (DeepL, Google Translate, and Yandex), mixed with renderings of the same passages
made by human translators. Our corpus consists of English to French translations of some
excerpts taken from Lewis Carrollâs Aliceâs Adventures in Wonderland
Not all Darwinisms are alike. Biological Darwinism is by now an established fact: its basis (first developed in The Origin of Species, 1859), natural selection, seems to have resisted so far to any serious falsification attempt. However, this idea has, over time, lent itself â with greater or lesser success â to applications even outside the biological sphere. The two books we will deal with in this paper are, in some way, extensions to the non-biological sphere of natural selection. One of them is such an extension in its proper sense: Dan Sperberâs Il contagio delle idee proposes a theory of the diffusion of cultural representations based on the idea of Darwinian natural selection. The other one â Patrick Tortâs Effetto Darwin â aims rather at correcting a bad reading of Darwinâs texts, and the opinion of those who see the British naturalist as the founder of social Darwinism and eugenics. Some âanti-functionalistâ considerations will be followed by a description and contextualization of the two texts, an analysis of their Italian translations and, finally, a summary of its results
In this article, we will use skopos theory, in the form developed by Hans J. Vermeer in Reiss &Vermeer (2013), to describe the translational choices of literary self-translators. We will firstsummarize the basics of skopos theory; we will then relate them to certain literary self-translationreadings that seem to distance this practice from instances of "normal" translation, i.e.translation which is not made by the author of the source text. This will finally lead us to showhow skopos theory can account for these differences on its own

Tradurre Ăš (anche) giocare, sĂŹ o no?
English: This contribution is based on an online seminar, held in April 2021, in which I asked the participants to translate some short passages from French into Italian, all of which can be linked to the concept of wordplay. All the excerpts were taken from a series of comics I had just translated at the time. My article will briefly describe the methods and contents of the seminar; it will then provide some quantitative and qualitative data on the versions I received (remembering that it will not be possible to draw generalizations from a sample that has not been selected according to any explicit criteria); finally, it will propose an assessment of the results and will try to provide some explanatory hypotheses.
