Nation, symbolism and revolution in Ukraine: tense ethnographic experience in/of liminality

Na Ucrânia, uma ex-colônia do Império Russo e ex-república da União Soviética, entre novembro de 2013 e fevereiro de 2014, milhares de pessoas tomaram as ruas dos centros urbanos, principalmente a Maidan Nezalejnosti, a praça principal de Kiev. Os manifestantes reivindicavam a assinatura de um acordo de livre-comércio com a União Europeia. Como o presidente decidiu adiar a assinatura do acordo, em prol do estreitamento dos laços com a Rússia, o movimento de protesto passou a reivindicar a renúncia do governo. O processo revolucionário assim desencadeado, conhecido como EuroMaidan ou Revolução da Dignidade, representaria um espaço-tempo liminar, durante o qual formas e ações simbólicas seriam negociadas para a conformação de uma nova ideologia de nation-building, marcada por uma forte distanciação dos vínculos históricos com a Rússia. Trata-se aqui de apresentar algumas reflexões etnográficas sobre as formas e ações simbólicas de uma nação em vias de reconstrução a partir de observações realizadas em Kiev na primeira metade de fevereiro de 2014.In Ukraine, a former colony of the Russian Empire, as well as a former republic of the Soviet Union, between November 2013 and February 2014, thousands of people took the streets of the main towns of the country, mainly the Maidan Nezalejnosti, the biggest square of Kiev. The demonstrators were pacifically demanding the signing of a free trade agreement with the European Union. As the president decided to postpone the signing of the agreement in favor of closer ties with Russia, the demonstrators moved to demand the resignation of the government. The revolutionary process thus triggered, known as EuroMaidan or the Revolution of Dignity, represented a liminal moment, during which symbolic forms and actions were negotiated in order to shape of a new nation-building ideology, marked by a strong distancing from historical ties with Russia. I will present here some ethnographic reflections on the symbolic forms and actions of a nation under reconstruction, using for that my own experiences in Kiev in the first half of February 2014

As ilhas Trobriand, a antropologia e os Dimdim

The texts published by anthropologists – books, articles, diaries – and the interpretations about this production created what is called by Annette B. Weiner anthropology’s “sacred places”, like the Trobriand Islands. However, little has been written about how people continue his life in these places after the anthropological fieldwork, nor what people think about the fieldworks that took place there creating the “sacred places”. This article presents some reflections about the relationship between doing anthropology, tourism, and reflexivity ellaborated after a visit to the Trobriand Islands in 2013.Os textos publicados pelos antropólogos – livros, artigos, diários – e as interpretações sobre essa produção criaram o que Annette B. Weiner chama de “lugares sagrados” da antropologia, como as Ilhas Trobriand. No entanto, pouco se escreveu sobre como os povos continuam suas vidas após a pesquisa de campo antropológica ou sobre o que pensam os povos sobre o trabalho de campo realizado em seu território, tornando esse lugar “sagrado”. Diversidade Sexual e de Gênero, Estado Nacional e Biopolítica no Sul Global: Lições da África

Nos últimos 25 anos, tem sido publicado um número de considerável de textos de autoria, em sua grande maioria, de pesquisadores/as africanos/as, tratando das expressões da diversidade sexual e de gênero no continente africano do ponto de vista das ciências sociais. Os textos têm em comum a relação que apresentam entre sexualidade, Estado nacional e globalização, contextualizados a partir dos efeitos do colonialismo, do imperialismo e do capitalismo. Trata-se aqui de apresentar ao público de leitores de língua portuguesa um breve resumo das principais ideias desenvolvidas em algumas dessas publicações, com o intuito de promover a necessidade de se produzirem reflexões comparativas sobre sexualidade no Sul Global.In the last 25 years, a considerable number of texts by African researchers have been published dealing with the expressions of sexual and gender diversity on the African continent from the perspective of the social sciences. The texts have in common the relationship they present between sexuality, national state, and globalization, considering the effects of colonialism, imperialism, and capitalism. I intend here to present a summary of the main ideas developed in some of these publications to a public of Portuguese-speaking readers in order to promote some comparative reflections on sexuality in the Global South

RESUMO:Partindo da narrativa biográfica de uma estudante de Santarém, no estado do Pará, Brasil, da literatura bioantropológica e bioarqueológica sobre dimorfismo sexual e da perspectiva queer, ponderaremos sobre a necessidade de se rever os sistemas representacionais médico-científico e jurídico-normativo.ABSTRACT:Based on the biographical narrative of a student from Santarém, in the State of Pará, Brazil, on the bioanthropological and bioarchaeological bibliography on sexual dimorphism, and on queer perspective, we will consider the need to review the medical-scientific and the legal-normative representational systems.

Diversidade sexual e de gênero, geo(necro)política e alternativas heterotópicas: Um mundo melhor (ainda) é possível?

Which social and political theories that emerged outside the hegemonic centers of thought can contribute to the understanding of the relationships between modernity, capitalism, national states, and moralities, thus configuring themselves as "other" epistemologies, methodologies and scientific ontologies, more appropriate to give account of geopolitics strongly marked by transnational dispositives that, in a necropolitical way, hide sexual and gender diversity (or non-normative sexualities) globally? What alternatives for a fairer and happier world would such theories, epistemologies, methodologies and scientific ontologies help us to envision, with regard to the expressions of sexual and gender diversity, in a future already underway? This article intends to answer, even partially, to these questions.¿Qué teorías sociales y políticas surgidas fuera de los centros de pensamiento hegemónicos pueden contribuir a la comprensión de las relaciones entre modernidad, capitalismo, estados nacionales y moralidades, configurándose así como epistemologias, metodologías y ontologías científicas "otras", más adecuadas para dar cuenta de una geopolítica fuertemente marcada por dispositivos transnacionales que, de manera necropolítica, ocultan la diversidad sexual y de género (o las sexualidades no normativas) a nivel global? ¿Qué alternativas para un mundo más justo y feliz nos ayudarían a vislumbrar tales teorías, epistemologías, metodologías y ontologías científicas, en relación con las expresiones de la diversidad sexual y de género, en un futuro ya en marcha? Sexual and Gender Diversity, National State and Biopolitics in the Global South: Lessons from Africa

Diversidade sexual e de gênero, Estado nacional e paisagens heterotópicas no Irã: Foucault e depois

No final da década de 1970, o mundo acompanhou os acontecimentos revolucionários que levaram à destituição da monarquia e à instauração de uma república islâmica no Irã. Michel Foucault viu nesses acontecimentos, caracterizados pela “espiritualidade política”, um potencial crítico à modernidade ocidental. Trata-se aqui de produzir uma reflexão sobre o impacto dessa “espiritualidade política” na construção de um Estado nacional baseado em tecnologias de poder/saber geradoras de distopia e conformadoras de uma ideologia nacional teocrática preocupada com o controle dos corpos e a imposição da heteronormatividade. Será possível, assim, abordar os modos criativos de resistência ao regime de verdade vigente e de produção de formas de subjetivação alternativas, principalmente no que diz respeito às experiências da diversidade sexual e de gênero. Esses modos compõem paisagens heterotópicas que desafiam a distopia reinante, como sugerido por minha experiência etnográfica no Irã em fevereiro de 2019. Gender and Sexual Diversity, National State and Heterotopic Landscape: Foucault and BeyondAt the end of the 1970s, the world followed the revolutionary events that led to the end of the monarchy and the establishment of an Islamic republic in Iran. Michel Foucault saw these events, characterized by a “political spirituality”, as a potential critic of Western modernity. This study presents a reflection on the effect of this “political spirituality” in the construction of a national State based on technologies of power/knowledge that generate a dystopia and shape a national theocratic ideology concerned with the control of bodies and the imposition of heteronormativity. This article shows the original ways of resistance established to counter the regime of truth and to produce an alternative way of being, especially regarding the experiences of gender and sexual diversity. These ways compose a heterotopic landscape that challenge the reigning dystopia, as suggested by observations in Iran in February 2019.Sexuality | State | Nation | Heterotopia | Ira
