    The psychosocial impact of assistive device scale: Italian validation in a cohort of nonambulant people with neuromotor disorders

    The importance of adaptive seating system on body structure and function is widely accepted, but its impact on psychosocial aspects needs more consideration by health professionals. This article describes the Italian validation of the Psychosocial Impact of Assistive Device Scale (IT-PIADS) for non-ambulant people with neuromotor disorders. Once agreement has been given by the original authors, the scale was translated and adapted to the Italian culture. The IT-PIADS was administered to different wheelchairs users with heterogeneous diagnosis. The internal consistency and test-retest reliability were examined. Its concurrent validity was evaluated with the Italian version of the WheelCon-M-SF. The IT-PIADS was administered to 87 subjects. Cronbach's α was 0.92 (p < 0.05), and the testretest reliability (ICC) for competence, adaptability and self-esteem subscales were 0.96, 0.90, 0.93 respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficient of the IT-PIADS with the WheelCon-M-I-SF scores showed significant data for competence and adaptability subscales. Psychosocial perception on assistive devices can be reliably measure. The IT-PIADS showed good psychometric properties and it is possible to confirm its validity for clinical and research purposes. Nevertheless, before using this measure with greater confidence, further psychometric properties tests of the IT-PIADS are recommended

    Effect of preparation method on activity and stability of LaMnO3 and LaCoO3 catalysts for the flameless combustion of methane

    A set of LaMnO3 and LaCoO3 catalysts was prepared through different synthesis procedures. The selected techniques included the sol-gel method, flame hydrolysis from aqueous solution, complexation through EDTA and solid-state reaction. The last was accomplished through reactive grinding by ball-milling either in a vibration mill or in a planetary mill. EDTA complexation was applied for LaCoO3 only and did not improve significantly catalyst activity or stability, with respect to other techniques. Ball-milling never allowed obtaining a pure perovskitic phase, at least under the most energetic grinding conditions permitted by our apparatus. The highest activity for the catalytic flameless combustion of methane was obtained with the sol-gel prepared samples, though thermal resistance revealed insufficient for high temperature applications. A bit lower activity, but coupled with good thermal stability was obtained with the samples prepared through flame hydrolysis

    Persistence Through Collaboration at Sea for Off-Shore and Coastal Operations

    Collaboration (Bruzzone et al. 2013a, b, c, d, e, f) is often mentioned as an opportunity to develop new capabilities for autonomous systems; indeed this paper proposes a practical application where use this approach to enhance the autonomy of the systems during operations in coastal areas or around offshore platforms. The proposed case deals with developing a collaborative approach (Bruzzone et al. 2013a, b, c, d, e, f) among an USV (Unmanned Surface Vehicle) with several AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) to guarantee persistent surveillance over a marine area (Shkurti et al. 2012). Obviously, the proposed solution could be adopted also for defense and homeland security (Bruzzone et al. 2011a, b, 2010) as well as for archeological site protection in consistence with related cost analysis. The authors propose a technological solution as well as a simulation framework to validate and demonstrate the capabilities of this new approach as well as to quantify expected improvements

    Perovskite catalysts for the catalytic flameless combustion of methane : preparation by flame-hydrolysis and characterisation by TPD-TPR-MS and EPR

    A new method was employed for the preparation of a set of lanthanum cobaltites of general formula La1-(x)M(x)CoO3+(\u3b4) with M=Ce, Eu and x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2. All the samples thus prepared were nanostructured, thermally very stable and characterised by highly crystalline perovskite-like structure and high surface area. Their activity as catalysts for the catalytic tameless combustion (CFC) of methane was by ca. one order of magnitude higher than that of their analogues, prepared through the usual calcination-milling (CM) procedure. Adsorption of oxygen was accompanied by formation of paramagnetic species. Desorption of preadsorbed oxygen was dependent on the nature of the doping element and on the value of the stoichiometric coefficient x of their formula. A correlation between the temperature of the maximal rate of oxygen release and catalytic activity was found. The following scale of activity for the title reaction versus x values could be set up: 0.1Ce>0.05Ce>0>0.05Eu>0.1 Eu 430.2Ce. The higher activity of Ce-doped catalysts as compared to those doped with Eu was found to be related to the strength of the bond between oxygen and Co ions

    Correlation between Quality of Life and severity of Parkinson's Disease by assessing an optimal cut-off point on the Parkinson's Disease questionnaire (PDQ-39) as related to the Hoehn & Yahr (H&Y) scale

    Purpose: Strong evidence shows that symptoms in individuals with Parkinson's Disease (PD) restrict both their independence and social participation, leading to a low Quality of Life (QoL). Conversely, a reduced QoL has a negative impact on symptoms. The aim is to evaluate the correlation between QoL and severity of PD by assessing the presence of an optimal cut-off point on the Parkinson's disease questionnaire (PDQ-39) as related to the Hoehn &Yahr (H&Y) scale in a cohort of Italian adults with PD. Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional study was performed. This study was conducted on a cohort of consecutive individuals. All participants were evaluated with the PDQ-39, and the severity of PD was recorded according to the H&Y scale by a neurologist. Receiver op-erating characteristic (ROC) curves and coordinates, visually inspected, were used to find cut-off points with optimal sensitivity and specificity. These were in turn used to determine the optimal PDQ-39 cut-off score for identifying disease severity according to H&Y stages. Results: 513 individuals were included in the study. The ROC curve analysis showed that QoL worsened with an increase in disease severity and age. Moreover, QoL was worse in females. Conclusions: The results of this study allowed for the correlation of QoL and disease severity in a cohort of individuals with PD. With this cut-off point, it is now possible to make a determination of QoL of an individual with PD at a certain stage of the disease, in a specific age range, and of a particular gender

    The expression of platelet serotonin transporter (SERT) in human obesity

    Serotonin (5-HT) is a well-known modulator of eating behavior. However, the molecular mechanisms linking its action to body weight balance have been only partially elucidated. Since platelets are a suitable peripheral model to study 5-HT transport, metabolism and release, we herein evaluated the expression of the platelet 5-HT re-uptake system (SERT) by [3H]-paroxetine binding assay. A cohort of 114 unrelated individuals (34 males, 80 females; age, mean +/- SD: 38.57 +/- 12.47 years) without major psychiatric disorders, was recruited following a naturalistic design regarding age or gender and classified accordingly to their body mass index (BMI). Subjects were divided into 5 groups: normal-weight (NW), overweight (OW) and grade I-III obese (OB) individuals. For gender analyses, data were transformed into [3H]-paroxetine density (Bmax)/BMI ratios to overcome both the disparity of women vs. men number and anthropometric differences between sexes.[3H]-paroxetine Bmax (SERT density, fmol/mg proteins) was reduced in platelet membranes of grade II (p < 0.01) and III (p < 0.001) obese subjects vs. controls and in overweight subjects (p < 0.05) vs. grade III obese individuals. Considering all patients together, a strong negative correlation between Bmax and BMI (r = -0.449; P < 0.0001) was demonstrated. Conversely, [3H]-paroxetine KD (dissociation constant, nM) did not differ among groups. No gender-related variation concerning Bmax/BMI ratios was observed in this cohort of subjects.The down-regulation of SERT in platelet membranes of severe human obesity (BMI > 35 Kg/m2) confirms the involvement of 5-HT system in body weight gain. Moreover, this findings may help to elucidate those monoamine-endocrine networks acting on fat storage, adipocyte signaling and energy balance. Targeting 5-HT/5-HT-related markers will possibly uncover the existence of human obesity subtypes

    Impact of supporting people with advanced Parkinson’s disease on carer’s quality of life and burden

    Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the burden and the quality of life (QoL) perceived by caregivers assisting advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. Patients and Methods: Consecutive advanced PD patients treated with levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) or continuous subcutaneous apomorphine infusion (CSAI) or care as usual (CU) and their care partners were recruited during routine visits according to a cross-sectional design. Caregiver’s distress was assessed by Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and a QoL survey to evaluate and understand the burden experienced by care partners during family and working activities. Results: A total of 126 patients (53 LCIG, 19 CSAI and 54 CU) and their care partners were enrolled. The ZBI score boxplot showed that LCIG and CU populations have a similar distribution (ZBI inter-quartile range [IQR] values respectively 18–42 for LCIG and 19–43 for CU group), while the CSAI group has a wider score range (IQR 16–52). Caregivers assisting patients in treatment with LCIG have more time to perform family or household duties (p=0.0022), or to engage in leisure activities (p=0.0073) compared to CU, while no difference was found when compared to CSAI group. Approximately 50% of the care partners showed mood changes in the last 6 months and LCIG and CSAI had less impact on caregiver’s mood compared to CU. Patients treated with LCIG were more independent in taking a bath or shower without assistance and were more able to move and walk without assistance. Conclusion: Care partners of advanced PD patients treated with device-aided therapies have more time for their own life and a better perception of their QoL with a tendency to an improvement of mood compared with those of patients treated with CU

    Suboptimal maternal nutrition, during early fetal liver development, promotes lipid accumulation in the liver of obese offspring

    Maternal nutrition during the period of early organ development can modulate the offspring's ability to metabolise excess fat as young adults when exposed to an obesogenic environment. This study examined the hypothesis that exposing offspring to nutrient restriction coincident with early hepatogenesis would result in endocrine and metabolic adaptations that subsequently lead to increased ectopic lipid accumulation within the liver. Pregnant sheep were fed either 50 or 100% of total metabolisable energy requirements from 30 to 80 days gestation and 100% thereafter. At weaning, offspring were made obese, and at ∼1 year of age livers were sampled. Lipid infiltration and molecular indices of gluconeogenesis, lipid metabolism and mitochondrial function were measured. Although hepatic triglyceride accumulation was not affected by obesity per se, it was nearly doubled in obese offspring born to nutrient-restricted mothers. This adaptation was accompanied by elevated gene expression for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARG) and its co-activator PGC1α, which may be indicative of changes in the rate of hepatic fatty acid oxidation. In contrast, maternal diet had no influence on the stimulatory effect of obesity on gene expression for a range of proteins involved in glucose metabolism and energy balance including glucokinase, glucocorticoid receptors and uncoupling protein 2. Similarly, although gene expressions for the insulin and IGF1 receptors were suppressed by obesity they were not influenced by the prenatal nutritional environment. In conclusion, excess hepatic lipid accumulation with juvenile obesity is promoted by suboptimal nutrition coincident with early development of the fetal liver
