Time perspective, depression, and substance misuse among the homeless
Using the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI; P. G. Zimbardo & J. N. Boyd, 1999), the authors found that homeless people, in comparison with a control group, had a significantly more negative outlook concerning their past and present as evinced by high Past-Negative and Present-Fatalistic scores and low Past-Positive scores on the ZTPI. However, the homeless individuals were almost indistinguishable from control participants on measures of Present-Hedonism and Future thinking. The homeless individuals had significantly higher levels of depression, with 31 out of 50 (62%) reaching criteria for probable depression. However, this finding was unrelated to their atypical time perspective. There was no significant relation between substance misuse and time perspective. Despite their current difficulties, including depression and drug abuse, the homeless individuals maintained a propensity toward future thinking characterized by striving to achieve their goals.
Parameterization of mixed layer eddies. III: Implementation and impact in global ocean climate simulations
A parameterization for the restratification by finite-amplitude, submesoscale, mixed layer eddies, formulated as an overturning streamfunction, has been recently proposed to approximate eddy fluxes of density and other tracers. Here, the technicalities of implementing the parameterization in the coarse-resolution ocean component of global climate models are made explicit, and the primary impacts on model solutions of implementing the parameterization are discussed. Three global ocean general circulation models including this parameterization are contrasted with control simulations lacking the parameterization. The MLE parameterization behaves as expected and fairly consistently in models differing in discretization, boundary layer mixing, resolution, and other parameterizations. The primary impact of the parameterization is a shoaling of the mixed layer, with the largest effect in polar winter regions. Solar Polar Fields During Cycles 21 --- 23: Correlation with Meridional Flows
We have examined polar magnetic fields for the last three solar cycles,
{}, cycles 21, 22 and 23 using NSO Kitt Peak synoptic magnetograms.
In addition, we have used SoHO/MDI magnetograms to derive the polar fields
during cycle 23. Both Kitt Peak and MDI data at high latitudes
(78--90) in both solar hemispheres show a significant
drop in the absolute value of polar fields from the late declining phase of the
solar cycle 22 to the maximum of the solar cycle 23. We find that long term
changes in the absolute value of the polar field, in cycle 23, is well
correlated with changes in meridional flow speeds that have been reported
recently. We discuss the implication of this in influencing the extremely
prolonged minimum experienced at the start of the current cycle 24 and in

Radiative Corrections to One-Photon Decays of Hydrogenic Ions
Radiative corrections to the decay rate of n=2 states of hydrogenic ions are
calculated. The transitions considered are the M1 decay of the 2s state to the
ground state and the E1(M2) decays of the and states to
the ground state. The radiative corrections start in order , but the method used sums all orders of . The leading
correction for the E1 decays is calculated and compared
with the exact result. The extension of the calculational method to parity

A high stability semiconductor laser system for a Sr-based optical lattice clock
We describe a frequency stabilized diode laser at 698 nm used for high
resolution spectroscopy of the 1S0-3P0 strontium clock transition. For the
laser stabilization we use state-of-the-art symmetrically suspended optical
cavities optimized for very low thermal noise at room temperature. Two-stage
frequency stabilization to high finesse optical cavities results in measured
laser frequency noise about a factor of three above the cavity thermal noise
between 2 Hz and 11 Hz. With this system, we demonstrate high resolution remote
spectroscopy on the 88Sr clock transition by transferring the laser output over
a phase-noise-compensated 200 m-long fiber link between two separated
laboratories. Our dedicated fiber link ensures a transfer of the optical
carrier with frequency stability of 7 \cdot 10^{-18} after 100 s integration
time, which could enable the observation of the strontium clock transition with
an atomic Q of 10^{14}. Furthermore, with an eye towards the development of
transportable optical clocks, we investigate how the complete laser system
(laser+optics+cavity) can be influenced by environmental disturbances in terms

Detecting a stochastic gravitational wave background with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna
The random superposition of many weak sources will produce a stochastic
background of gravitational waves that may dominate the response of the LISA
(Laser Interferometer Space Antenna) gravitational wave observatory. Unless
something can be done to distinguish between a stochastic background and
detector noise, the two will combine to form an effective noise floor for the
detector. Two methods have been proposed to solve this problem. The first is to
cross-correlate the output of two independent interferometers. The second is an
ingenious scheme for monitoring the instrument noise by operating LISA as a
Sagnac interferometer. Here we derive the optimal orbital alignment for
cross-correlating a pair of LISA detectors, and provide the first analytic

Outsourcing Governance: States and the Politics of a ‘Global Value Chain World’
Politics, and by extension states, are marginal in debates about the genesis, evolution
and functioning of the GVC-based global economy. We contend here that the core complexity of
state agency and state power needs to be much more carefully understood in GVC and related
debates, as a basis on which the governance of the evolving GVC world can be properly
theorised as revolving around the inseparability of economic and political power. We advance a
framework for understanding the role of politics and states in the construction and maintenance
of a GVC world, using a three-fold typology of facilitative, regulatory and distributive forms of
governance, and propose a notion of ‘outsourcing governance’ as an attempt to capture the
ways in which states purposefully, through active political agency, have engaged in a process of
delegating a variety of governance functions and authority to private actors. Our overarching
argument is normative: ‘outsourced governance’ of the form we currently observe is associated
with regressive distributional outcomes, and is antithetical to an inclusive and sustainable global
economy
A new measurement of direct CP violation in two pion decays of the neutral kaon
The NA48 experiment at CERN has performed a new measurement of direct CP
violation, based on data taken in 1997 by simultaneously collecting K_L and K_S
decays into pi0pi0 and pi+pi-. The result for the CP violating parameter

Search for Colour Singlet and Colour Reconnection Effects in Hadronic Z Decays at LEP
A search is performed in symmetric 3-jet hadronic Z decay events for evidence
of colour singlet production or colour reconnection effects. Asymmetries in the
angular separation of particles are found to be sensitive indicators of such
effects. Upper limits on the level of colour singlet production and colour
reconnection effects are established for a variety of models
