School Finance Reform: Assessing General Equilibrium Effects

    Get PDF
In 1994 the state of Michigan implemented one of the most comprehensive school finance reforms undertaken to date in any of the states. Understanding the effects of the reform is thus of value in informing other potential reform initiatives. In addition, the reform and associated changes in the economic environment provide an opportunity to assess whether a simple general equilibrium model can be of value in framing the study of such reform initiatives. In this paper, we present and use such a model to derive predictions about the effects of the reform on housing prices and neighborhood demographic compositions. Broadly, our analysis implies that the effects of the reform and changes in the economic environment are likely to have been reflected primarily in housing prices and only modestly on neighborhood demographics. We find that evidence for the Detroit metropolitan area from the decade encompassing the reform is largely consistent with the predictions of the model.

Mutual information and sensitivity analysis for feature selection in customer targeting: a comparative study

    Get PDF
WOS:000454945400004Feature selection is a highly relevant task in any data-driven knowledge discovery project. The present research focuses on analysing the advantages and disadvantages of using mutual information (MI) and data-based sensitivity analysis (DSA) for feature selection in classification problems, by applying both to a bank telemarketing case. A logistic regression model is built on the tuned set of features identified by each of the two techniques as the most influencing set of features on the success of a telemarketing contact, in a total of 13 features for MI and 9 for DSA. The latter performs better for lower values of false positives while the former is slightly better for a higher false-positive ratio. Thus, MI becomes a better choice if the intention is reducing slightly the cost of contacts without risking losing a high number of successes. However, DSA achieved good prediction results with less features.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    The weak core inverse

[EN] In this paper, we introduce a new generalized inverse, called weak core inverse (or, in short, WC inverse) of a complex square matrix. This new inverse extends the notion of the core inverse defined by Baksalary and Trenkler (Linear Multilinear Algebra 58(6):681-697, 2010). We investigate characterizations, representations, and properties for this generalized inverse. In addition, we introduce weak core matrices (or, in short, WC matrices) and we show that these matrices form a more general class than that given by the known weak group matrices, recently investigated by H. Wang and X. Liu.In what follows, we detail the acknowledgements. D.E. Ferreyra, F.E. Levis, A.N. Characterizations of k-commutative equalities for some outer generalized inverses

[EN] In this paper, we present necessary and sufficient conditions for the k-commutative equality , where X is an outer generalized inverse of the square matrix A. Also, we give new representations for core EP, DMP, and CMP inverses of square matrices as outer inverses with prescribed null space and range. In addition, we characterize the core EP inverse as the solution of a new system of matrix equations.D. E. Ferreyra F. E. Study of the light-induced metal-insulator transition in SrTiO3 by photoresistance spectroscopy

    Get PDF
Photoresistivity and its spectral response has been systematically studied in oxygen deficient SrTiO3 single crystals for a wide range of resistivities, ρ, and carrier densities, n. At roomtemperature we have found a persistent photoresistance that gradually decreases as ρ is diminished or n is increased in addition to relaxation times of seconds to a few minutes suggesting that trapping of carriers is playing a major role. An analysis of the photoresistance excitation spectra shows two distinctive features that are related to the indirect gap of SrTiO3 at (3.25 ± 0.04) eV and to a direct transition at (3.40 ± 0.03) eV. The photoresistive crystals present a temperature dependent resisitivity under illumination that experiences a metal-insulator transition below T ∼ 85 K. Lowtemperature photoresistance spectrum reveals as a suitable technique to understand the origin of this transition, pointing to an enhanced efficiency of the ∼ 3.25 eV gap to promote electrons to the bottom of the conduction band.Fil: Bridoux, German. Controls on the dedolomitization of top of Villa Mónica Formation, Tandilia System

    Get PDF
Dedolomitization is the process of replacement of dolomite by calcite which mostly occurs under meteoric water influence. The shallow marine deposits of the Villa Mónica Formation (VMF) (~1150-720 Ma) constitute here is a good example of where to study this process. VMF is the older unit of the sedimentary basin infill in Tandilia System (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and it is formed by a lower section (22 m) mainly composed of quartz-arkosic sandstones, and an upper mainly dolomitic section (36-52 m) with thin interbedded green claystone levels and ending with red claystone and purple marl. The contact between the top of VMF and the base of the Colombo Formation is an erosive surface. Previous studies indicate that the VMF was affected by deep burial diagenesis followed by telogenesis. However, the expression of the weathering processes over the dolostones is poorly known. Thus, the proposal of this work is to recognize and characterize features related to weathering processes in the last meters of the upper section of the VMF.Fil: Ferreyra, Camila.
