Applying remote sensing and GIS techniques in solving rural county information needs

    Get PDF
The project designed was to acquaint county government officials and their clientele with remote sensing and GIS products that contain information about land conditions and land use. Other users determined through the course of this project were federal agencies working at the county level, agricultural businesses and others in need of spatial information. The specific project objectives were: (1) to investigate the feasibility of using remotely sensed data to identify and quantify specific land cover categories and conditions for purposes of tax assessment, cropland area measurements and land use evaluation; (2) to investigate the use of satellite remote sensing data as an aid in assessing soil management practices; and (3) to evaluate the use of remotely sensed data to assess soil resources and conditions which affect productivity

The antibacterial action of microcin J25: evidence for disruption of cytoplasmic membrane energization in Salmonella newport

    Get PDF
Microcin J25 (MccJ25) is a cyclic peptide of 21 unmodified amino acid residues produced by a fecal strain of Escherichia coli. It has previously been shown that the antibiotic activity of this peptide is mainly directed to Enterobacteriaceae, including several pathogenic E. coli, Salmonella and Shigella strains. In this paper we show that MccJ25 acts on the cytoplasmic membrane of Salmonella newport cells producing alteration of membrane permeability, and the subsequent gradient dissipation, that initiate the inhibition of process, such as oxygen consumption. These results, taken together with our in vitro observations [Rintoul et al. (2000) Biochim. Biophys. Acta 1509, 65–72], strongly suggest that the disruption of the cytoplasmic membrane gradient is closely related to the bactericidal activity of MccJ25 in S. newport.Fil: Rintoul, Maria Regina. NASA applications project in Miami County, Indiana

The study site selection is intended to serve all of the different research areas within the project, i.e., soil conditions, soil management, etc. There are seven major soil associations or soils formed on similar landscapes in the Miami Co., and over 38 soil series that were mapped. Soil sampling was conducted in some sites because of its variability in soils and cover types, variable topography, and presence of erosion problems. Results from analysis of these soil data is presented

Simultaneous environmental and economic process synthesis of Isobutane Alkylation

This multidisciplinary study concerns the optimal design of processes with a view to both maximizing profit and minimizing environmental impacts. This can be achieved by a combination of traditional chemical process design methods, measurements of environmental impacts and advanced mathematical optimization techniques. More to the point, this paper presents a hybrid simulation-multiobjective optimization approach that at once optimizes the production cost and minimizes the associated environmental impacts of isobutane alkylation. This approach has also made it possible to obtain the flowsheet configurations and process variables that are needed to manufacture isooctane in a way that satisfies the above-stated double aim. The problem is formulated as a Generalized Disjunctive Programming problem and solved using state-of-the-art logic-based algorithms. It is shown, starting from existing alternatives for the process, that it is possible to systematically generate a superstructure that includes alternatives not previously considered. The optimal solution, in the form a Pareto curve, includes different structural alternatives from which the most suitable design can be selected. To evaluate the environmental impact, Life Cycle Assessment based on two different indicators is employed: Ecoindicator 99 and Global Warming Potential.Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (CTQ2012-37039-C02-02)

    Architecting Time-Critical Big-Data Systems

    Get PDF
Current infrastructures for developing big-data applications are able to process –via big-data analytics- huge amounts of data, using clusters of machines that collaborate to perform parallel computations. However, current infrastructures were not designed to work with the requirements of time-critical applications; they are more focused on general-purpose applications rather than time-critical ones. Addressing this issue from the perspective of the real-time systems community, this paper considers time-critical big-data. It deals with the definition of a time-critical big-data system from the point of view of requirements, analyzing the specific characteristics of some popular big-data applications. This analysis is complemented by the challenges stemmed from the infrastructures that support the applications, proposing an architecture and offering initial performance patterns that connect application costs with infrastructure performance

DETECCIÓN Y CORRECCIÓN DE ERRORES MEDIANTE EL CÓDIGO HAMMING

    Get PDF
