Two new marine species from South Korea with remarks on the family Stylochidae (Acotylea, Polycladida, Plathelminthes)
Two new species of acotylean Polycladida are described from Korea, Munseoma maculata gen. et sp. nov., Callioplanidae, and Crytostylochus koreensis sp. nov., Stylochidae. Munseoma maculata is characterized by a small free prostatic vesicle but only indistinctly cut off from the ejaculatory duct; a Lang's vesicle is present. Crytostylochus koreensis possesses a prostatic vesicle with tubular lining of radial arrangement. Each papillate tube is connected via a glandular duct to a single extra-vesicular gland attached to the muscular wall of the prostatic vesicle. That morphological feature forces discussion of the relationships within the family Stylochidae. Consequently, type material of other stylochids deposited in the museums of Hamburg, Vienna, and Stockholm was borrowed to investigate the genital organs and, in particular, the interior lining of the prostatic vesicle. Based on these analyses, two new types of prostatic lining are defined, the polyglandular type and the monoglandular type. The monoglandular type is defined as having an oval to elongate prostatic vesicle with tubular lining and extra-vesicular glands. Each extra-vesicular gland is connected via a glandular duct with a single tube. The polyglandular type is defined as having a mostly roundish oval prostatic vesicle with long-fingered extensions, more or less horizontally directed distad, and numerous extra-vesicular glands. Each long-fingered extension is connected via several glandular ducts of extra-vesicular glands. Based on these new characters, the family Stylochidae is newly defined.Fil: Bulnes, Verónica Natalia. Fracturas de columna toraco-lumbar: Complicaciones de la vía anterior
Objetivo: Analizar las complicaciones de las fracturas torazo-lumbares tratadas mediante abordaje anterior, derivadas de la misma vía de abordaje, de la técnica de descompresión o de la estabilización propiamente dicha.
Pacientes: Durante un periodo de 10 años (1983-1993), se realizaron 39 abordajes anteriores para el tratamiento de las fracturas del tránsito torazo-lumbar. Los pacientes presentaban clínica neurológica parcial. Todos los casos tuvieron un seguimiento mínimo de 5 años.
Resultados: Siete de los 39 pacientes intervenidos mostraron algún tipo de complicación, siendo 9 las complicaciones totales encontradas, lo que supone una tasa del 23%. A corto plazo encontramos 3 complicaciones derivadas de la vía de abordaje y 1 infección profunda de partes blandas. A largo plazo apareció una infección profunda, 2 roturas de material y 2 pseudoartrosis. Las complicaciones de la vía del abordaje se resolvieron con medidas conservadoras, mientras que los pacientes con infección profunda precisaron reintervención y retirada de la osteosíntesis. Los casos de pseudoartrosis se resolvieron con fijación posterior de apoyo, y las roturas de material no originaron ningún gesto quirúrgico añadido para su resolución.
Conclusiones: El porcentaje de complicaciones que muestra nuestra serie es similar a los publicados en la literatura. La osteosíntesis y artrodesis anterior con empleo de injertos estructurales permite reconstruir la altura perdida, recurriendo a la artrodesis posterior de apoyo sólo en aquellos casos con marcada osteoporosis o defecto técnico constatado en la cirugía.Objective: Analyse the complications of the thoraco-lumbar fractures treated with anterior approach, due to the approach, decompression technique, or the stabilisation by itself.
Patients: Between 1983-1993, we review 39 anterior approaches for treatment of the thoraco-lumbar fractures. Patients had incomplete neurological clinic. All of them were followed for a minim of 5 years.
Results: Seven of the 39 patients had any kind of complication. There were 9 complications in overall (23%). In a short time there were 3 complications due to the approach and 1 deep infection. In a long period we found 1 deep infection, 2 failures of material and 2 pseudoarthrosis. Complications of the approach were resolved without surgery, but patients with deep infection had a new surgery for treatment. The pseudoarthrosis were treated by posterior approach, and failures of material did not need another surgery.
Conclusions: We have a percentage of complications similar to the other authors. The anterior instrumentation and fusion with use of structural graft allows to reconstruct the lost height, using the posterior artrodesis only in cases with severe osteoporosis or defect technical observed during the surgery
Cirugía de revisión de la columna lumbar
Objetivo: Analizar las causas del fracaso de la cirugía en el raquis lumbar y los resultados obtenidos en la cirugía de revisión.
Pacientes: Entre 1995 y 1998 un total de 39 pacientes fueron remitidos a nuestra Unidad de Columna para revisión de la cirugía de su raquis lumbar. Los diagnósticos más frecuentes en la revisión fueron la estenosis de canal y la fibrosis perirradicular. El tratamiento empleado en la mayoría de los casos fue una descompresión radicular, y una osteosístesis y artrodesis vertebral. El seguimiento mínimo fue de 12 meses.
Resultados: Realizamos una valoración económico-funcional con la escala modificada de Prolo, observando un aumento de 0.5 puntos en la vertiente económica, y de 1.5 puntos en la funcional, lo que se interpretó como una capacidad de los pacientes de reincorporarse a su entorno laboral y poder realizar la práctica totalidad de sus actividades cotidianas excepto las deportivas. El 72% de los pacientes estaban satisfechos o muy satisfechos con los resultados.
Conclusiones: El éxito de la cirugía de revisión radica en realizar un correcto diagnóstico del fracaso de la cirugía inicial. Los peores resultados de la cirugía inicial. Los peores resultados de la cirugía de revisión han sido aquellos en los que el motivo de la misma fue una fibrosis perirradicular, mientras que los mejores resultados se dieron en las recidivas heriarias.Objective: To analyse the causes of failure in lumbar surgery and the results with revision surgery.
Patients: Between 1995-1998, 39 patients were seen in our Spine Unit for a revision of their lumbar spine surgery. Most common diagnosis of the revision were spinal stenosis and peridural fibrosis. The principal treatment employed was nerve decompression and instrumentation with vertebral fusion. Minimum follow up: 12 months.
Results: We did an economic-functional evaluation with the modified scale of Prolo, and noticed an increase of 0.5 points at the economic side and of 1.5 points at the functional side; which meant that the patients could return to their usual work and do all the diary activities except sports. 72% of the patients were satisfied or very satisfied with the results.
Conclusions: The success of the revision surgery is based on an accurate analysis of the failure of the first surgery. The worst result of the revision surgery was caused by treatment of peridural fibrosis, while the best results were found in reoccurrence of discal herniation
Photothermal deflection determination of iron(II) with ferrozine with sorption preconcentration on silufol plates
Photothermal deflection spectroscopy was applied to the selective detection of iron(II) chelate with ferrozine by its sorption preconcentration on Silufol plates. The linearity range was 1 × 10-11-6 × 10 -8 mol cm-2 of chelate at the plate surface, which corresponded to 1 × 10-9 × 10-6 M of chelate in solution. The limits of detection and quantification are 8 × 10 -12 and 2.5 × 10-11 mol cm-2 at the plate from 15 μL of test solution (0.5 nM and 1.5 nM in solution, respectively), and the absolute detection limit is 8 fmol in the whole spot applied to a plate. Characteristics and features of photothermal deflection detection are discussed. © 2008 Society for Applied Spectroscopy
He Scattering from Compact Clusters and from Diffusion-Limited Aggregates on Surfaces: Observable Signatures of Structure
The angular intensity distribution of He beams scattered from compact
clusters and from diffusion limited aggregates, epitaxially grown on metal
surfaces, is investigated theoretically. The purpose is twofold: to distinguish
compact cluster structures from diffusion limited aggregates, and to find
observable {\em signatures} that can characterize the compact clusters at the
atomic level of detail. To simplify the collision dynamics, the study is
carried out in the framework of the sudden approximation, which assumes that
momentum changes perpendicular to the surface are large compared with momentum
transfer due to surface corrugation. The diffusion limited aggregates on which
the scattering calculations were done, were generated by kinetic Monte Carlo
simulations. It is demonstrated, by focusing on the example of compact Pt
Heptamers, that signatures of structure of compact clusters may indeed be
extracted from the scattering distribution. These signatures enable both an
experimental distinction between diffusion limited aggregates and compact
clusters, and a determination of the cluster structure. The characteristics
comprising the signatures are, to varying degrees, the Rainbow, Fraunhofer,
specular and constructive interference peaks, all seen in the intensity
distribution. It is also shown, how the distribution of adsorbate heights above
the metal surface can be obtained by an analysis of the specular peak
attenuation. The results contribute to establishing He scattering as a powerful
tool in the investigation of surface disorder and epitaxial growth on surfaces,
