    Plasmon-exciton-polariton lasing

    Strong coupling of Frenkel excitons with surface plasmons leads to the formation of bosonic quasi-particles known as plasmon-exciton-polaritons (PEPs).Localized surface plasmons in nanoparticles are lossy due to radiative and nonradiative decays, which has hampered the realization of polariton lasing in a plasmonic system, i.e., PEP lasing. These losses can be reduced in collective plasmonic resonances supported by arrays of nanoparticles. Here we demonstrate PEP lasing in arrays of silver nanoparticles by showing the emergence of a threshold in the photoluminescence accompanied by both a superlinear increase of the emission and spectral narrowing. We also observe a reduction of the threshold by increasing the coupling between the molecular excitons and the resonances supported by the array despite the reduction of the quantum efficiency of the emitters. The coexistence of bright and dark collective modes in this plasmonic system allows for a 90?-change of polarization in the emission beyond the threshold

In software companies this practice is every day more accepted and companies have to assume it, if they want to be competitive. However, the effective definition of these processes and mainly their maintenance and execution are not always easy tasks. This paper presents an approach based on the Model-Driven paradigm for Business Process Management in software companies.     Instabilities of conducting fluid layers in weak time-dependent magnetic fields

    We present the experimental analysis of the instabilities generated on a large drop of liquid metal by a time-dependent magnetic field. The study is done exploring the range of tiny values of the control parameter (the ratio between the Lorentz forces and inertia) avoiding nonlinear effects. Two different instabilities break the symmetries generating spatial patterns that appear without a threshold for some specific frequencies (up to the experimental precision) and have been observed for parameter values two orders of magnitude lower than in previously published experiments [J. Fluid Mech. 239, 383 (1992)]. One of the instabilities corresponds to a boundary condition oscillation that generates surface waves and breaks the azimuthal symmetry. The other corresponds to a parametric forcing through a modulation of the Lorentz force. The competition between these two mechanisms produces time-dependent patterns near codimension-2 points

    Characterization and wear performance of boride phases over tool steel substrates

    This research work was conducted to characterize boride phases, obtained from the powder-pack process, on AISI H13 and D2 steel substrates, and investigate their tribological behavior. The boriding was developed at a temperature of 1273 K with an exposure time of 8 h. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were conducted on the borided material to characterize the presence of the FeB, Fe2B, and CrB phases and the distribution of heavy elements on the surface of the substrates. The adherence of the boride layers was evaluated, in a qualitative form, through the Daimler-Benz Rockwell-C indentation technique. Sliding wear tests were then performed using a reciprocating wear test machine. All tests were conducted in dry conditions at room temperature. A frequency of 10 Hz and 15-mm sliding distance were used. The applied Hertzian pressure was 2.01 GPa. Scanning electron microscopy was used to observe and analyze the wear mechanisms. Additionally, the variation of the friction coefficient versus the number of cycles was obtained. Experimental results showed that the characteristic wear mechanism for the borided surface was plastic deformation and mild abrasive wear; for unborided substrates, cracking and spalling were observed

    Evaluation of cholinergic markers in Alzheimer's disease and in a model of cholinergic deficit

    Cognitive deficits in neuropsychiatric disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), have been closely related to cholinergic deficits. We have compared different markers of cholinergic function to assess the best biomarker of cognitive deficits associated to cholinergic hypoactivity. In post-mortem frontal cortex from AD patients, acetylcholine (ACh) levels, cholinacetyltransferase (ChAT) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were all reduced compared to controls. Both ChAT and AChE activity showed a significant correlation with cognitive deficits. In the frontal cortex of rats with a selective cholinergic lesion, all cholinergic parameters measured (ACh levels, ChAT and AChE activities, "in vitro" and "in vivo" basal ACh release) were significantly reduced. AChE activity was associated to ChAT activity, and even more, to "in vivo" and "in vitro" basal ACh release. Quantification of AChE activity is performed by an easy and cheap method and therefore, these results suggest that determination of AChE activity may be used as an effective first step method to evaluate cholinergic deficits

    Facilitation of cholinergic transmission by combined treatment of ondansetron with flumazenil after cortical cholinergic deafferentation

    We have studied the effects of concomitant blockade of 5-HT(3) and GABA(A) receptors on acetylcholine (ACh) release in the frontal cortex of rats with a selective cholinergic lesion. Lesions were performed by microinjection of the cholinergic toxin 192 IgG-saporin into the nucleus basalis magnocellularis. Single treatment with either the 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist ondansetron, 0.1 microg/kg, or the GABA(A) receptor benzodiazepine site antagonist flumazenil, 10 mg/kg, did not affect ACh release. However, the combined ondansetron + flumazenil administration significantly increased ACh release to a similar extent as a depolarising stimulus with K(+), 100 mM, at both 7 and 30 days post-lesion. Cortical perfusion with the combined ondansetron + flumazenil treatment also increased [(3)H]ACh efflux "in vitro" 30 days after lesion, suggesting that local events within the frontal cortex may participate in the interaction of ondansetron with GABAergic neurons, modulating ACh release in situations of cholinergic hypoactivity. No differences in the expression of 5-HT(3) and GABA(A) receptors in the frontal cortex were found after the cholinergic lesion. These results suggest that a combined ondansetron + flumazenil treatment would contribute to restoring a diminished cholinergic function and may provide a basis for using this treatment in the therapy of cognitive disorders associated with degeneration of the cholinergic system

    Finite Temperature Pion Scattering to one-loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory

    We present the pion-pion elastic scattering amplitude at finite temperature to one-loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory. The thermal scattering amplitude properly defined allows to generalize the perturbative unitarity relation to the T0T\neq 0 case. Our result provides a model independent prediction of an enhanced pion-pion low-energy phase shift with the temperature and it has physical applications within the context of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures.     The collision of two slowly rotating, initially non boosted, black holes in the close limit

    We study the collision of two slowly rotating, initially non boosted, black holes in the close limit. A ``punctures'' modification of the Bowen - York method is used to construct conformally flat initial data appropriate to the problem. We keep only the lowest nontrivial orders capable of giving rise to radiation of both gravitational energy and angular momentum. We show that even with these simplifications an extension to higher orders of the linear Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli black hole perturbation theory, is required to deal with the evolution equations of the leading contributing multipoles. This extension is derived, together with appropriate extensions of the Regge-Wheeler and Zerilli equations. The data is numerically evolved using these equations, to obtain the asymptotic gravitational wave forms and amplitudes. Expressions for the radiated gravitational energy and angular momentum are derived and used together with the results of the numerical evolution to provide quantitative expressions for the relative contribution of different terms, and their significance is analyzed.Comment: revtex, 18 pages, 2 figures.     Finite temperature pion vector form factors in Chiral Perturbation Theory

    We discuss the thermal behaviour of the pion vector form factors and calculate them in one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory. The perturbative result is used to analyze the TT-dependent electromagnetic pion charge radius, obtaining a rough estimate of the deconfinement critical temperature. Imposing thermal unitarity, we generate the ρ\rho resonance pole for the form factor in the center of mass frame. The ρ\rho peak height in the modulus of the form factor decreases for increasing temperature, while its width increases and the peak position is slightly shifted downwards for TT\simeq 150 MeV. These results point in the direction suggested by many analysis of dilepton production data in relativistic heavy ion collisions.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, final version to appear in Phys.Lett.B, added references and comments, abstract change
