    Short Note on the Unemployment Rate of the French Overseas Regions

    This article analyzes the hysteresis hypothesis in the unemployment rates of the four French overseas regions (Guadeloupe, Martinique, Guyana, Reunion) [FORs] over the period 1993-2008. We use standard univariate and panel unit root tests, among them Choi (2006) and Lopez (2009) that account for cross-sectional dependence and have improved performance when the number of countries and the time dimension of the data are limited. Our results cannot reject the null hypothesis of a unit root and so find evidence supporting hysteresis in the unemployment rates for the FORs.panel unit root, unemployment, hysteresis.

    Improving transferability of introduced species' distribution models: new tools to forecast the spread of a highly invasive seaweed

    Extent: 13 p.The utility of species distribution models for applications in invasion and global change biology is critically dependent on their transferability between regions or points in time, respectively. We introduce two methods that aim to improve the transferability of presence-only models: density-based occurrence thinning and performance-based predictor selection. We evaluate the effect of these methods along with the impact of the choice of model complexity and geographic background on the transferability of a species distribution model between geographic regions. Our multifactorial experiment focuses on the notorious invasive seaweed Caulerpa cylindracea (previously Caulerpa racemosa var. cylindracea) and uses Maxent, a commonly used presence-only modeling technique. We show that model transferability is markedly improved by appropriate predictor selection, with occurrence thinning, model complexity and background choice having relatively minor effects. The data shows that, if available, occurrence records from the native and invaded regions should be combined as this leads to models with high predictive power while reducing the sensitivity to choices made in the modeling process. The inferred distribution model of Caulerpa cylindracea shows the potential for this species to further spread along the coasts of Western Europe, western Africa and the south coast of Australia.Heroen Verbruggen, Lennert Tyberghein, Gareth S.     Evolution and diversification within the intertidal brown macroalgae Fucus spiralis/F. vesiculosus species complex in the North Atlantic

    We examined 733 individuals of Fucusspiralis from 21 locations and 1093 Fucusvesiculosus individuals from 37 locations throughout their northern hemisphere ranges using nuclear and mitochondrial markers. Three genetic entities of F. spiralis were recovered. In northern and sympatric populations, the presence of "F. spiralis Low" in the mid-intertidal and "F. spiralis High" in the high-intertidal was confirmed and both co-occurred with the sister species F. vesiculosus. The third and newly-discovered entity, "F. spiralis South", was present mainly in the southern range, where it did not co-occur with F. vesiculosus. The South entity diverged early in allopatry, then hybridized with F. vesiculosus in sympatry to produce F. spiralis Low. Ongoing parallel evolution of F. spiralis Low and F. spiralis High is most likely due to habitat preference/local selection and maintained by preferentially selfing reproductive strategies. Contemporary populations of F. spiralis throughout the North Atlantic stem from a glacial refugium around Brittany involving F. spiralis High; F. spiralis South was probably unaffected by glacial episodes. Exponential population expansion for F. vesiculosus began during the Cromer and/Holstein interglacial period (300,000-200,000 yrs BP). Although airway epithelial cells represent an important target for infection, the respiratory epithelium is also composed of an elaborate network of dendritic cells (DCs) that are essential sentinels of the immune system, sensing pathogens and presenting foreign antigens to T lymphocytes. In this report, we show that in vitro infection by human coronavirus 229E (HCoV-229E) induces massive cytopathic effects in DCs, including the formation of large syncytia and cell death within only few hours. In contrast, monocytes are much more resistant to infection and cytopathic effects despite similar expression levels of CD13, the membrane receptor for HCoV-229E. While the differentiation of monocytes into DCs in the presence of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor and interleukin-4 requires 5 days, only 24 h are sufficient for these cytokines to sensitize monocytes to cell death and cytopathic effects when infected by HCoV-229E. Cell death induced by HCoV-229E is independent of TRAIL, FasL, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and caspase activity, indicating that viral replication is directly responsible for the observed cytopathic effects. The consequence of DC death at the early stage of HCoV-229E infection may have an impact on the early control of viral dissemination and on the establishment of long-lasting immune memory, since people can be reinfected multiple times by HCoV-229E

    CONCERTO: Extracting the power spectrum of the [C II ] emission line

    CONCERTO is the first experiment to perform a [CII] line intensity mapping survey to target z>5.2z>5.2. Measuring the [CII] power spectrum allows us to study the role of dusty star-forming galaxies in the star formation history during the Reionization and post-Reionization. The main obstacle to this measurement is the contamination by bright foregrounds. We evaluate our ability to retrieve the [CII] signal in mock observations using the Simulated Infrared Dusty Extragalactic Sky. We compared two methods for dealing with the dust continuum emission from galaxies: the standard PCA and the arPLS method. For line interlopers, the strategy relies on masking low-redshift galaxies using external catalogues. As we do not have observations of CO or classical CO proxies ,we relied on the COSMOS stellar mass catalogue. To measure the power spectrum of masked data, we adapted the P of K EstimatoR and discuss its use on LIM data. The arPLS method achieves a reduction of the continuum background to a sub-dominant level of the [CII] at z=7 by a factor of>70. When using PCA, this factor is only 0.7. The masking lowers the power amplitude of line contamination down to 2×102Jy2/sr2 \times 10^2 Jy^2/sr This residual level is dominated by faint undetected sources. For our [CII] model, this results in a detection at z = 5.2 with a power ratio [CII]/(residual interlopers) = 62±3262 \pm 32 for a 22 % area survey loss. However, at z = 7, [C II ] / (residual interlopers)=2.0±1.4=2.0 \pm 1.4. Thanks to the large area covered by SIDES-Uchuu, we show that the power amplitude of line residuals varies by 12-15% for z=5.2-7. We present an end-to-end simulation of the extragalactic foreground removal that we ran to detect the [CII] at high redshift via its power spectrum. We show that dust continuum emission are not a limiting foreground for [CII] LIM. Residual CO and [CI] limits our ability to measure the [CII] power spectrum at z>7.Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysic
