    Supersymmetric Higgs pair discovery prospects at hadron colliders

    We study the potential of hadron colliders in the search for the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Using analytical expressions for the relevant amplitudes, we perform a detailed signal and background analysis, working out efficient kinematical cuts for the extraction of the signal. The important role of squark loop contributions to the signal is emphasised. If the signal is sufficiently enhanced by these contributions, it could even be observable at the next run of the upgraded Tevatron collider in the near future.     Increased sensitivity to cocaine-induced analgesia in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR)

    This study examined the analgesic effect of cocaine in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR), which are considered a suitable model for the study of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and in Wistar (WIS) rats of both sexes using the hot-plate test. In addition, we tested whether habituation to the unheated hot-plate apparatus, that "normalizes" the basal hypoalgesic phenotype of SHR, alters the subsequent cocaine-induced analgesia (CIA) in this strain. SHR of both sexes were hypoalgesic compared to WIS rats in the hot-plate test and showed higher sensitivity to CIA. Habituation to the unheated hot-plate reduced the basal nociceptive latency of SHR, suggesting cognitive/emotional modulation of pain in this strain, but did not alter the magnitude of CIA. The present study shows increased sensitivity to CIA in SHR, which may be related to abnormalities in the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic system. Further studies using SHR strain may reveal new information on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying ADHD and its co-morbidity with drug addiction

    A Conceptual Image-Based Data Glove for Computer-Human Interaction

    Data gloves are devices equipped with sensors that capture the movements of the hand of the user in order to select or manipulate objects in a virtual world. Data gloves were introduced three decades ago and since then have been used in many 3D interaction techniques. However, good data gloves are too expensive and only a few of them can perceive the full set of hand movements. In this paper we describe the design of an image-based data glove (IBDG) prototype suitable for finger sensible applications, like virtual objects manipulation and interaction approaches. The proposed device uses a camera to track visual markers at finger tips, and a software module tocompute the position of each finger tip and its joints in real-time. To evaluate our concept, we have built a prototype and tested it with 15 volunteers. We also discuss how to improve the engineering of the prototype, how to turn it into a low cost interaction device, as well as other relevant issues about this original concept

    Colloid-stabilized emulsions: behaviour as the interfacial tension is reduced

    We present confocal microscopy studies of novel particle-stabilized emulsions. The novelty arises because the immiscible fluids have an accessible upper critical solution temperature. The emulsions have been created by beginning with particles dispersed in the single-fluid phase. On cooling, regions of the minority phase nucleate. While coarsening these nuclei become coated with particles due to the associated reduction in interfacial energy. The resulting emulsion is arrested, and the particle-coated interfaces have intriguing properties. Having made use of the binary-fluid phase diagram to create the emulsion we then make use of it to study the properties of the interfaces. As the emulsion is re-heated toward the single-fluid phase the interfacial tension falls and the volume of the dispersed phase drops. Crumpling, fracture or coalescence can follow. The results show that the elasticity of the interfaces has a controlling influence over the emulsion behaviour.Comment: Submitted for the proceedings of the 6th Liquid Matter Conference, held in Utrecht (NL) in July 200

    A cultura do dendê no Brasil é afetada por importantes doenças, com destaque para anel-vermelho (Rhadinaphelenchus cocophilus). No estado do Amazonas, os plantios de dendê são recentes, e, normalmente, estabelecidos em áreas próximas de floresta. A intensificação das práticas de poda e colheita, por ocasião do início da produção, tende a expor as plantas ao ataque do inseto vetor Rhynchophorus palmarum. Na estação experimental do CPAA, onde existe um banco de germoplasma de dendê plantado em 412ha, foi constatado recentemente um surto dessa doença. Estudos estão sendo conduzidos visando determinar a população anual do inseto vetor e os níveis de contaminação deste com os nematóides.Edição dos resumos do XXVIII Congresso Brasileiro de Fitopatologia.     Decrease in sleep depth is associated with higher cerebrospinal fluid neurofilament light levels in patients with Alzheimer's disease

    STUDY OBJECTIVES: The majority of studies investigating the association between sleep and Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers have been performed in healthy participants. Our objective was to investigate the association between sleep and several biomarkers that reflect distinct aspects of AD physiopathology. METHODS: The cohort included 104 individuals with mild-moderate AD. The participants were submitted to one-night polysomnography, and cerebrospinal fluid was collected in the following morning to measure the selected biomarkers associated with amyloid deposition, tau pathology, neurodegeneration, axonal damage, synaptic integrity, neuroinflammation, and oxidative damage. RESULTS: There was a positive correlation between neurofilament light (NF-L) and the time spent in stage 1 of non-rapid eyes movement (NREM) (N1) sleep and a negative correlation between this marker and the time spent in stage 3 of NREM (N3) sleep. Accordingly, we observed that deep sleep was associated with lower levels of NF-L, whereas light sleep increased the probability of having higher levels of this marker. Furthermore, chitinase-3-like-1 (YKL-40) was negatively correlated with sleep efficiency, the time spent in stage 2 of NREM (N2) sleep, and the time spent in N3 sleep. Conversely, there was a positive correlation between N3 sleep and the oxidative protein damage markers N-ε-(carboxyethyl)lysine and N-ε-(malondialdehyde)lysine. CONCLUSIONS: There were significant correlations between sleep parameters and AD biomarkers related to axonal damage and neuroinflammation, such as NF-L and YKL-40. A lack of deep sleep was associated with higher levels of NF-L. This highlights a potential role for NF-L as a biomarker of sleep disruption in patients with mild-moderate AD in addition to its role in predicting neurodegeneration and cognitive decline

    VEGF Promotes Malaria-Associated Acute Lung Injury in Mice

    The spectrum of the clinical presentation and severity of malaria infections is broad, ranging from uncomplicated febrile illness to severe forms of disease such as cerebral malaria (CM), acute lung injury (ALI), acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), pregnancy-associated malaria (PAM) or severe anemia (SA). Rodent models that mimic human CM, PAM and SA syndromes have been established. Here, we show that DBA/2 mice infected with P. berghei ANKA constitute a new model for malaria-associated ALI. Up to 60% of the mice showed dyspnea, airway obstruction and hypoxemia and died between days 7 and 12 post-infection. The most common pathological findings were pleural effusion, pulmonary hemorrhage and edema, consistent with increased lung vessel permeability, while the blood-brain barrier was intact. Malaria-associated ALI correlated with high levels of circulating VEGF, produced de novo in the spleen, and its blockage led to protection of mice from this syndrome. In addition, either splenectomization or administration of the anti-inflammatory molecule carbon monoxide led to a significant reduction in the levels of sera VEGF and to protection from ALI. The similarities between the physiopathological lesions described here and the ones occurring in humans, as well as the demonstration that VEGF is a critical host factor in the onset of malaria-associated ALI in mice, not only offers important mechanistic insights into the processes underlying the pathology related with malaria but may also pave the way for interventional studies
