    A geostatistical approach for dynamic life tables: The effect of mortality on remaining lifetime and annuities

    Dynamic life tables arise as an alternative to the standard (static) life table, with the aim of incorporating the evolution of mortality over time. The parametric model introduced by Lee and Carter in 1992 for projected mortality rates in the US is one of the most outstanding and has been used a great deal since then. Different versions of the model have been developed but all of them, together with other parametric models, consider the observed mortality rates as independent observations. This is a difficult hypothesis to justify when looking at the graph of the residuals obtained with any of these methods. Methods of adjustment and prediction based on geostatistical techniques which exploit the dependence structure existing among the residuals are an alternative to classical methods. Dynamic life tables can be considered as two-way tables on a grid equally spaced in either the vertical (age) or horizontal (year) direction, and the data can be decomposed into a deterministic large-scale variation (trend) plus a stochastic small-scale variation (residuals). Our contribution consists of applying geostatistical techniques for estimating the dependence structure of the mortality data and for prediction purposes, also including the influence of the year of birth (cohort). We compare the performance of this new approach with different versions of the Lee–Carter model. Additionally, we obtain bootstrap confidence intervals for predicted qxt resulting from applying both methodologies, and we study their influence on the predictions of e65t and a65t . © 2010 Elsevier B.V.     Analysis of CMB maps with 2D wavelets

    We consider the 2D wavelet transform with two scales to study sky maps of temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). We apply this technique to simulated maps of small sky patches of size 12.8 \times 12.8 square degrees and 1.5' \times 1.5' pixels. The relation to the standard approach, based on the cl's is established through the introduction of the scalogram. We consider temperature fluctuations derived from standard, open and flat-Lambda CDM models. We analyze CMB anisotropies maps plus uncorrelated Gaussian noise (uniform and non-uniform) at idfferent S/N levels. We explore in detail the denoising of such maps and compare the results with other techniques already proposed in the literature. Wavelet methods provide a good reconstruction of the image and power spectrum.     Electromagnetic dipole moments of charged baryons with bent crystals at the LHC

    We propose a unique program of measurements of electric and magnetic dipole moments of charm, beauty and strange charged baryons at the LHC, based on the phenomenon of spin precession of channeled particles in bent crystals. Studies of crystal channeling and spin precession of positively- and negatively-charged particles are presented, along with feasibility studies and expected sensitivities for the proposed experiment using a layout based on the LHCb detector.Comment: 19 pages, 13 figure

    Search for new physics via baryon EDM at LHC

    Permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles provide powerful probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. We propose to search for the EDM of strange and charm baryons at LHC, extending the ongoing experimental program on the neutron, muon, atoms, molecules and light nuclei. The EDM of strange Λ\Lambda baryons, selected from weak decays of charm baryons produced in pp collisions at LHC, can be determined by studying the spin precession in the magnetic field of the detector tracking system. A test of CPT symmetry can be performed by measuring the magnetic dipole moment of Λ\Lambda and Λ\overline{\Lambda} baryons. For short-lived Λc+\Lambda_c^+ and Ξc+\Xi_c^+ baryons, to be produced in a fixed-target experiment using the 7 TeV LHC beam and channeled in a bent crystal, the spin precession is induced by the intense electromagnetic field between crystal atomic planes.     Expanded metabolite coverage of Saccharomyces cerevisiae extract through improved chloroform/methanol extraction and tert-butyldimethylsilyl derivatization

    AbstractWe present an improved extraction and derivatization protocol for GC–MS analysis of amino/non-amino acids in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Yeast cells were extracted with chloroform: aqueous-methanol (1:1, v/v) and the resulting non-polar and polar extracts combined and dried for derivatization. Polar and non-polar metabolites were derivatized using tert-butyldimethylsilyl (t-BDMS) dissolved in acetonitrile. Using microwave treatment of the samples, the derivatization process could be completed within 2 h (from >20 h of the conventional method), providing fully derivatized metabolites that contain multiple derivatizable organic functional groups. This results in a single derivative from one metabolite, leading to increased accuracy and precision for identification and quantification of the method. Analysis of combined fractions allowed the method to expand the coverage of detected metabolites from polar metabolites i.e. amino acids, organic acids and non-polar metabolites i.e. fatty alcohols and long-chain fatty acids which are normally non detectable. The recoveries of the extraction method was found at 88 ± 4%, RSD, N = 3 using anthranilic acid as an internal standard. The method promises to be a very useful tool in various aspects of biotechnological applications i.e. development of cell factories, metabolomics profiling, metabolite identification, 13C-labeled flux analysis or semi-quantitative analysis of metabolites in yeast samples

    Novel efficient genome-wide SNP panels for the conservation of the highly endangered Iberian lynx

    Background: The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) has been acknowledged as the most endangered felid species in the world. An intense contraction and fragmentation during the twentieth century left less than 100 individuals split in two isolated and genetically eroded populations by 2002. Genetic monitoring and management so far have been based on 36 STRs, but their limited variability and the more complex situation of current populations demand more efficient molecular markers. The recent characterization of the Iberian lynx genome identified more than 1.6 million SNPs, of which 1536 were selected and genotyped in an extended Iberian lynx sample. Methods: We validated 1492 SNPs and analysed their heterozygosity, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, and linkage disequilibrium. We then selected a panel of 343 minimally linked autosomal SNPs from which we extracted subsets optimized for four different typical tasks in conservation applications: individual identification, parentage assignment, relatedness estimation, and admixture classification, and compared their power to currently used STR panels. Results: We ascribed 21 SNPs to chromosome X based on their segregation patterns, and identified one additional marker that showed significant differentiation between sexes. For all applications considered, panels of autosomal SNPs showed higher power than the currently used STR set with only a very modest increase in the number of markers. Conclusions: These novel panels of highly informative genome-wide SNPs provide more powerful, efficient, and flexible tools for the genetic management and non-invasive monitoring of Iberian lynx populations.     Observational constraints to boxy/peanut bulge formation time

    Boxy/peanut bulges are considered to be part of the same stellar structure as bars and both could be linked through the buckling instability. The Milky Way is our closest example. The goal of this letter is determining if the mass assembly of the different components leaves an imprint in their stellar populations allowing to estimate the time of bar formation and its evolution. To this aim we use integral field spectroscopy to derive the stellar age distributions, SADs, along the bar and disc of NGC 6032. The analysis shows clearly different SADs for the different bar areas. There is an underlying old (>=12 Gyr) stellar population for the whole galaxy. The bulge shows star formation happening at all times. The inner bar structure shows stars of ages older than 6 Gyrs with a deficit of younger populations. The outer bar region presents a SAD similar to that of the disc. To interpret our results, we use a generic numerical simulation of a barred galaxy. Thus, we constrain, for the first time, the epoch of bar formation, the buckling instability period and the posterior growth from disc material. We establish that the bar of NGC 6032 is old, formed around 10 Gyr ago while the buckling phase possibly happened around 8 Gyr ago. All these results point towards bars being long-lasting even in the presence of gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

    Novel method for the direct measurement of the tau lepton dipole moments

    A novel method for the direct measurement of the elusive magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton is presented. The experimental approach relies on the production of tau+ leptons from Ds+ -> tau+ nu_tau decays, originated in fixed-target collisions at the LHC. A sample of polarized tau+ leptons is kinematically selected and subsequently channeled in a bent crystal. The magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau+ lepton are measured by determining the rotation of the spin-polarization vector induced by the intense electromagnetic field between crystal atomic planes.
