We present new experimental atomic transition values for the atomic emission spectrum of doubly ionized argon, Ar III. In this work we studied 3s23p4 — 3s23p33d, 3s23p4 — 3s23p34s , 3s23p4 — 3s23p34d, 3s23p4 — 3s23p35s, 3s23p33d — 3s23p34p, and 3s23p34s — 3s23p34p transition arrays and 196 lines were identified as new atomic transitions between levels of these configurations. The experimental data were obtained from a capillary-discharge tube. The identifications are supported by multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock relativistic calculations.Centro de Investigaciones ÓpticasFacultad de Ciencias Astronómicas y Geofísica

Evaluation of self-absorption of manganese emission lines in Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy measurements

This paper is part of a more general study aimed to the determination of the best experimental procedures for reliable quantitative measurements of Fe-Mn alloys by LIBS. In this work, attention is pointed on the self-absorption processes, whose effect deeply influences the LIBS measurements, reflecting in non-linear calibration curves. The effect of self-absorption on the line intensity can be quantified by defining a self absorption coefficient, that measures the deviation of the line intensity from the linear extrapolation of the curve of growth in the optically thin regime. The authors demonstrated in a previous paper that self absorption coefficients could be calculated once the electron density of the plasma is known and the Stark coefficients of the lines are available. However, when the Stark coefficients of the lines of interest are not known, a different approach is needed. In this work a new method for evaluation of self absorption coefficients in LIBS measurements is presented, which does not require the knowledge of Stark coefficients. In order to understand the basic principles and setting out the theoretical tools that will be used for the analysis o f the alloys, a preliminary study was done on pure Mn; LIBS spectra were acquired in different experimental conditions, at different laser energies and different delays after the laser irradiation o f the sample. Moreover, collinear double pulse measurements were also performed. Analytical relations were derived and experimental procedures devised for evaluation o f the self absorption coefficients of several Mn lines, which are important for characterization and control of the experimental conditions in which the analysis is performed

Weighted Oscillator Strengths And Lifetimes For The Ar Iii Spectrum

    No full text
The weighted oscillator strengths (gf) and the lifetimes for Ar III presented in this work were carried out in a multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock relativistic (HFR) approach. In this calculation, the electrostatic parameters were optimized by a least-squares procedure in order to improve the adjustment to experimental energy levels. This method produces gf-values that are in better agreement with intensity observations and lifetimes values that are closer to the experimental ones. In this work we presented all the experimentally known electric dipole Ar III spectral lines. © 2001 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.692171188Moore, C.E., Atomic energy levels (1971) Nat Bur Stand (US), 35 (5 I), p. 359Hopfield, J.J., Dike, G.H., (1926) Phys Rev, 27, p. 638Boyce, J.C., Compton, K.T., (1929) Proc Nat Acad, 15, p. 656von Keussler, V., Uber das Spektrum des Ar++ Ions, Ar III (1933) Zeit Phys, 84, pp. 42-55de Bruin, T.L., The spectrum of doubly ionized Argon, A III (1933) Proc Amst Acad, 36, pp. 724-729de Bruin, T.L., Pieter Zeeman jubilee volume (1935) The Hague: Martinius Nijhoff, p. 413de Bruin, T.L., New terms in the spark spectra of Argon, A II and A III (1937) Proc Amst Acad, 40, pp. 340-348Boyce, J.C., The spectra of argon in the extreme ultraviolet (1935) Phys Rev, 48, pp. 396-402Boyce, J.C., A note on the intersystem combination lines in A III (1936) Phys Rev, 49, p. 351Fawcett, B.C., Precock, N.J., Cowan, R.D., Classification and oscillator strengths of lines in the far vacuum ultra-violet spectrum of the iron period elements (1968) J Phys B, 1, pp. 295-306Pinnington, E.H., Curnutte, B., Dufay, M., Argon spectrum between 500 and 1000 Å produced by beam-foil exitation (1971) J Opt Soc Am, 61, pp. 978-980Hansen, J.E., Persson, W., A revised analysis of the spectrum of Ar III (1987) J Phys B, 20, p. 693Kelly, J., (1987) Phys Chem Ref Data, 16, pp. 397-398Lestven-Vaïsse, I., Folkmann, F., Ben, S.A., Chantepie, M., Lecler, D., (1988) Phys Scripta, 38, p. 45Luna, F.R.T., Bredice, F., Cavalcanti, G.H., Trigueiros, A.G., Atomic transitions for the doubly ionized argon spectrum, Ar III (2000) Braz J Phys, 30, pp. 386-391Sobelman, H., Atomic spectra and radiativite transitions (1979) Academy of Sciences of the USSR, , P.N. A new analysis of the optical spectrum of Kr III is presented. The configurations 4s(2)4p(4), 4s4p(5), 4s(2)4p(3)5p, and 4s(2)4p(3)(4d + 5d + 6d + 5s + 6s + 7s) have been studied and the energy levels reported for these configurations were revised and extended to include three new levels of the 4s(2)4p(3)6s configuration, 16 new levels of the 4s(2)4p(3)5d configuration and five new levels of the 4s(2)4p(3)6d configuration. Twenty known level values of the odd configurations were redesignated. The energy parameters were obtained using relativistic Hartree-Fock (HFR) calculations. Configuration interaction Rydberg series have been included in the calculations and calculated lifetime values for the energy levels of the odd configurations are also presented.29235643565
