Compact high-voltage pulse generator for pulsed electric field applications: lab-scale development

    Get PDF
Square wave pulses have been identified as more lethal compared to exponential decay pulses in PEF applications. This is because of the on-time which is longer causes a formidable impact on the microorganisms in the food media. To have a reliable high-voltage pulse generator, a technique of capacitor discharge was employed. Four units of capacitor rated 100 μF 1.2 kV were connected in series to produce 25 μF 4.8 kV which were used to store the energy of approximately 200 J. The energy stored was discharged via HTS 181-01-C to the load in the range of nano to microseconds of pulse duration. The maximum voltage applied was limited to 4 kV because it is a lab-scale project. The electrical circuit diagram and the development procedure, as well as experimental results, are presented

A Partial Discharge (PD) is an unwanted phenomenon in electrical equipment. Therefore it is of great importance to identify different types of PD and assess their severity. This paper investigates the acoustic emissions associated with Internal Discharge (ID) from different types of sources in the time-domain. An experimental setup was arranged in the high voltage laboratory, a chamber with an electrode configuration attached to it was connected to a high voltage transformer for generating various types of PD. A laboratory experiment was done by making the models of these discharges. The test equipment including antennas as a means of detection and digital processing techniques for signal analysis were used. Wavelet signal processing was used to recover the internal discharge acoustic signal by eliminating the noises of many natures

Co-pyrolysis of rubberwood sawdust (RWS) and polypropylene (PP) in a fixed bed pyrolyzer

    Get PDF
Co-pyrolysis of rubberwood sawdust (RWS) waste and polypropylene (PP) was carried out at different temperatures (450,500,550, and 600°C) with biomass to plastics ratio 1:1 by using fixed bed drop-type pyrolyzer. The yield of pyrolysis oil has an increasing trend as the temperature increased from 450°C to 550°C. However, the pyrolysis oil yield dropped at a temperature of 600°C. Co-pyrolysis of RWS and PP generated maximum pyrolysis oil with 36.47 wt.% at 550°C. The result is compared with the pyrolysis of RWS only without plastics, with the same feedstock, and the maximum pyrolysis oil yield obtained was 33.3 wt.%. The water content in pyrolysis oil of co-pyrolysis RWS with PP is lower than RWS only with 54.2 wt.% and 62 wt.% respectively. Hydrocarbons, acyclic olefin, alkyl, and aromatic groups are the major compound in the pyrolysis oil from the co-pyrolysis process. Carbon monoxide (52.2 vol.%) and carbon dioxide (38.2 vol.%) are the major gas components

The future of metabolomics in ELIXIR.

    Get PDF
Metabolomics, the youngest of the major omics technologies, is supported by an active community of researchers and infrastructure developers across Europe. To coordinate and focus efforts around infrastructure building for metabolomics within Europe, a workshop on the "Future of metabolomics in ELIXIR" was organised at Frankfurt Airport in Germany. This one-day strategic workshop involved representatives of ELIXIR Nodes, members of the PhenoMeNal consortium developing an e-infrastructure that supports workflow-based metabolomics analysis pipelines, and experts from the international metabolomics community. The workshop established metabolite identification as the critical area, where a maximal impact of computational metabolomics and data management on other fields could be achieved. In particular, the existing four ELIXIR Use Cases, where the metabolomics community - both industry and academia - would benefit most, and which could be exhaustively mapped onto the current five ELIXIR Platforms were discussed. This opinion article is a call for support for a new ELIXIR metabolomics Use Case, which aligns with and complements the existing and planned ELIXIR Platforms and Use Cases

    Get PDF
This paper describes the Geometrical Optics (GO) based path loss model for indoor environment path loss prediction. Both Geometrical Optics based total rays model and direct ray path loss model were developed. Optimization was then conducted to improve both models in path loss prediction for case of Line- Of - Sight (LOS) indoor environment. Both Geometrical Optics based total rays model and direct ray model were optimized with log-distance-dependent expression using least-square approach. This log-distance-dependent expression includes all effects due to multiple reflection and all uncertainties which is distance-dependent. The path loss measurement was conducted in Division of Information Technology (DITSC), Universiti Putra Malaysia. Both models were optimized with measured path loss which was collected from DITSC. The value of correction factor and coefficient in additional expression for optimized GO were developed and presented in this paper. The optimized GO based modes ware validated at five buildings in Universiti Putra Malaysia by referring to the absolute mean error for its accuracy and effectiveness in path loss prediction. The optimized direct ray model shows the best accuracy compared with optimized total rays model, direct ray model and total rays model

Prediction of surface leakage current of overhead insulators under environmental and electrical stresses

    Get PDF
Leakage current is one of the critical aspects to consider for overhead transmission line insulator’s condition and performance assessment. As the leakage current increase, the size of the dry band also will increase leads to the dry band arcing, deteriorate the insulator performance and contribute to the development of insulator flashover. Based on the literature study, other than the existence of contaminations on the surface of insulator combined with moisture, the variation in leakage current is also affected by the environmental and electrical stresses. Previous researches have shown the effect of environmental and electrical stresses on surface leakage current based on experimental and simulation results. This paper outlines an analytical approach based on dimensional analysis to propose a new mathematical model of leakage current under environmental and electrical stresses. To justify the applicability of the derived dimensional model, the new model has been validated using previous researcher’s experimental results. The validation indicated that the proposed model had shown a good agreement with the previous experimental results. The proposed dimensional equation for this research work can be potentially used as a predictive performance model to evaluate and monitor the leakage current and insulator’s performance
