    Classrooms As Socialization Agents: The Three R\u27s And Beyond

    The conceptualization of curriculum as more than a document, specifically, as an active negotiation and construction of knowledge, was explored in two different studies as a first step toward understanding curriculum in practice. In particular, the studies explored the social process curriculum which was embedded in the enacted curriculum in the classrooms. Findings showed that the enacted curriculum was comprised of many elements, i.e., a pragmatic, unofficial, masked, social, and hidden curriculum. Each of these types of enacted curriculum were interwoven within the enacted curriculum, and were socializing agents which conveyed norms, behaviors, values and meanings to students

    Person-Related Protective and Vulnerability Factors of Psychopathology Symptoms in Non-Clinical Adolescents

    Psychopathology in youths is thought to originate from a dynamic interplay of a variety of protective and vulnerability factors. In this study, a large multi-ethnic sample of non-clinical adolescents (N = 376) completed questionnaires for measuring a wide range of person-related protective and vulnerability factors as well as psychopathology symptoms, in order to explore (a) the relations among various protective and vulnerability factors, and (b) the unique contributions of these protective and vulnerability factors to different types of psychological problems. Results indicated that the overlap among protective and vulnerability factors was quite modest. Further, it was found that factors clustered in theoretically meaningful components reflecting protection, vulnerability, and more specific aspects of coping and social support. Finally, data indicated that each type of psychopathology symptoms was associated with a typical set of protective and vulnerability factors. Although these results should be interpreted with caution because of the cross-sectional nature of the study, they may nevertheless guide future research exploring multifactorial models of psychopathology in youths

    Community Violence Exposure and Conduct Problems in Children and Adolescents with Conduct Disorder and Healthy Controls

    Exposure to community violence through witnessing or being directly victimized has been associated with conduct problems in a range of studies. However, the relationship between community violence exposure (CVE) and conduct problems has never been studied separately in healthy individuals and individuals with conduct disorder (CD). Therefore, it is not clear whether the association between CVE and conduct problems is due to confounding factors, because those with high conduct problems also tend to live in more violent neighborhoods, i.e., an ecological fallacy. Hence, the aim of the present study was: (1) to investigate whether the association between recent CVE and current conduct problems holds true for healthy controls as well as adolescents with a diagnosis of CD; (2) to examine whether the association is stable in both groups when including effects of aggression subtypes (proactive/reactive aggression), age, gender, site and socioeconomic status (SES); and (3) to test whether proactive or reactive aggression mediate the link between CVE and conduct problems. Data from 1178 children and adolescents (62% female; 44% CD) aged between 9 years and 18 years from seven European countries were analyzed. Conduct problems were assessed using the Kiddie-Schedule of Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia diagnostic interview. Information about CVE and aggression subtypes was obtained using self-report questionnaires (Social and Health Assessment and Reactive-Proactive aggression Questionnaire (RPQ), respectively). The association between witnessing community violence and conduct problems was significant in both groups (adolescents with CD and healthy controls). The association was also stable after examining the mediating effects of aggression subtypes while including moderating effects of age, gender and SES and controlling for effects of site in both groups. There were no clear differences between the groups in the strength of the association between witnessing violence and conduct problems. However, we found evidence for a ceiling effect, i.e., individuals with very high levels of conduct problems could not show a further increase if exposed to CVE and vice versa. Results indicate that there was no evidence for an ecological fallacy being the primary cause of the association, i.e., CVE must be considered a valid risk factor in the etiology of CD

    Early detection of fetal structural abnormalities

    Most published data on the detection of fetal anomalies at 11-14 weeks are from specialized centres with considerable experience in fetal anomaly scanning. However, there is still limited information on the feasibility and limitations of the screening of these anomalies compared with the now classical mid-gestation screening. This review indicates that overall, the detection rate of fetal anomalies at 11-14 weeks is 44% compared with 74% by the mid-pregnancy scan. Major abnormalities of the fetal head, abdominal wall and urinary tract, and of the umbilical cord and placenta, can be reliably detected at 10-11 weeks of gestation. Detection of other anomalies such as spina bifida, diaphragmatic hernia or heart defects is limited before 13 weeks of gestation. So far it cannot be stated that routine first trimester screening can be used on a large scale to evaluate the fetal spine and heart in the general population. In particular, in screening for congenital heart defects, the ability to perform a full cardiac examination increases from 20% at 11 weeks to 92% at 13 weeks. The early prenatal diagnosis of these anomalies may be improved by screening at 13-14 weeks rather than during the first trimeste

    Contribution of S. xylosus and L. sakei ssp. carnosus Fermentation to the Aroma of Lupin Protein Isolates

    Aroma-active compounds of lupin protein isolate and lupin protein isolate fermented with Staphylococcus xylosus and Lactobacillus sakei ssp. carnosus were investigated. The changes in aroma-active compounds were determined by application of aroma extract dilution analysis in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/olfactometry for identification, and by stable isotope dilution assays for quantification. A total of 30 aroma-active compounds for non-fermented and fermented samples were identified. The aroma profile of LPI fermented with Lactobacillus sakei ssp. carnosus was characterized as roasty and popcorn-like. Staphylococcus xylosus generated cheesy impressions, being in line with the fact that the main aroma compounds acetic acid, butanoic acid, and 2/3-methylbutanoic acid could be identified. Quantification of butanoic acid further confirmed these findings with the highest concentration of 140 mg/kg for LPI fermented with Staphylococcus xylosus. Our study provides insights into how fermentation utilizing different fermentative microbial strains, namely Staphylococcus xylosus and Lactobacillus sakei ssp. carnosus alters the aroma profile of lupin protein isolates. This demonstrates the potential of shaping fermented protein-based foods via targeted microbiological refinement

    Aroma Properties of Cocoa Fruit Pulp from Different Origins

    Cocoa pulp occurs as a by-product of cocoa bean production and can be repurposed to different food applications, such as jams, fruit preparations and beverages, improving the sustainability of cocoa production, as well as the livelihoods of cocoa farmers. In this work, aroma-active compounds of fresh cocoa fruit pulps from different origins were investigated by applying aroma extract dilution analyses in combination with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry/olfactometry for identification. In total, 65 aroma-active compounds were determined in four different pulps originating from Indonesia, Vietnam, Cameroon, and Nicaragua. Vietnamese pulp showed the highest number of aroma-active regions, while Cameroonian pulp accounted for the lowest. Moreover, Cameroonian cocoa pulp showed the lowest FD factors. Overall, the odorants with the highest FD factors were trans-4,5-epoxy-(E)-decenal, 2- and 3-methylbutanoic acid, 3-(methylthio)propanal, 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine, (E,E)-2,4-nonadienal, (E,E)-2,4-decadienal, 4-vinyl-2-methoxyphenol, δ-decalactone, 3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethylfuran-2(5H)-one, dodecanoic acid, and linalool. This study provides insights into the aroma composition of fresh cocoa pulp from different origins for future food applications
