    Developing a Program Community of Practice for Leadership Development

    This article outlines how a community of practice can be designed within management education for effective leadership development. Through a qualitative study of a cohort of 25 owner-managers of small businesses, we explore how a program community of practice (PCoP) acts as a pedagogical device for focusing on the development of leadership practice. Drawn from ‘grounded theory’ analysis, we outline a pedagogic heuristic of a PCoP built upon on an emergent rather than a didactic curriculum, shaped by the PCoP members’ own experiences and practices of managing their businesses. Our contribution is to illustrate the significant value of applying communities of practice theory to pedagogic designs in order to advance the development of leadership practice in small businesses. We critically examine this contribution with regard to the scope that designing a PCoP can bring to leadership development and the challenges for educators designing and facilitating an emergent curriculum

    Light Element Abundance Patterns in the Orion Association: I) HST Observations of Boron in G-dwarfs

    The boron abundances for two young solar-type members of the Orion association, BD -6 1250 and HD 294297, are derived from HST STIS spectra of the B I transition at 2496.771 A. The best-fit boron abundances for the target stars are 0.13 and 0.44 dex lower than the solar meteoritic value of log e(B)=2.78. An anticorrelation of boron and oxygen is found for Orion when these results are added to previous abundances obtained for 4 B-type stars and the G-type star BD -5 1317. An analysis of the uncertainties in the abundance calculations indicates that the observed anticorrelation is probably real. The B versus O relation observed in the Orion association does not follow the positive correlation of boron versus oxygen which is observed for the field stars with roughly solar metallicity. The observed anticorrelation can be accounted for by a simple model in which two poorly mixed components of gas (supernova ejecta and boron-enriched ambient medium) contribute to the new stars that form within the lifetime of the association.     Combining dynamic relaxation method with artificial neural networks to enhance simulation of tensegrity structures

    Abstract: Structural analyses of tensegrity structures must account for geometrical nonlinearity. The dynamic relaxation method correctly models static behavior in most situations. However, the requirements for precision increase when these structures are actively controlled. This paper describes the use of neural networks to improve the accuracy of the dynamic relaxation method in order to correspond more closely to data measured from a full-scale laboratory structure. An additional investigation evaluates training the network during the service life for further increases in accuracy. Tests showed that artificial neural networks increased model accuracy when used with the dynamic relaxation method. Replacing the dynamic relaxation method completely by a neural network did not provide satisfactory results. First tests involving training the neural network online showed potential to adapt the model to changes during the service life of the structure. DOI: 10.1061/�ASCE�0733-9445�2003�129:5�672

    Examining high school students’ personality traits of extraversion and emotional stability in relation to their academic expectation and value appraisals

    Abstract : Both personality and motivational characteristics can be considered to estimate individuals’ potential for adjustment and development. That said, these characteristics are rarely studied in conjunction. In this study, we examine how personality and motivational characteristics relate one to the other and influence how students approach learning. More precisely, we analyzed the additive and interactive effects of two intimately related traits (extraversion and emotional stability) from the Big Five model of personality on five motivational dimensions reflecting academic expectations (sense of competence) and values (interest, utility, and mastery and performance goal orientations). Data was collected from a sample of 303 students in tenth and eleventh grade (108 boys and 195 girls; Mage = 16.275 years, SD = 1.149) in a French-Canadian public high school in the greater Quebec City area. Primary analyses included both bivariate correlation and hierarchical regression analyses. Correlations indicated that emotionally stable students were more interested in learning. Hierarchical regression showed that emotionally stable students were more likely to exhibit a performance goal orientation, especially when they were extroverted. These analyses also revealed that emotionally stable students were more interested in learning, especially when they had a strong sense of competence. Results are discussed in light of the limited but relevant existing literature

    WMO global annual to decadal climate update: a prediction for 2021–25

    As climate change accelerates, societies and climate-sensitive socioeconomic sectors cannot continue to rely on the past as a guide to possible future climate hazards. Operational decadal predictions offer the potential to inform current adaptation and increase resilience by filling the important gap between seasonal forecasts and climate projections. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has recognized this and in 2017 established the WMO Lead Centre for Annual to Decadal Climate Predictions (shortened to “Lead Centre” below), which annually provides a large multimodel ensemble of predictions covering the next 5 years. This international collaboration produces a prediction that is more skillful and useful than any single center can achieve. One of the main outputs of the Lead Centre is the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update (GADCU), a consensus forecast based on these predictions. This update includes maps showing key variables, discussion on forecast skill, and predictions of climate indices such as the global mean near-surface temperature and Atlantic multidecadal variability. it also estimates the probability of the global mean temperature exceeding 1.5°C above preindustrial levels for at least 1 year in the next 5 years, which helps policy-makers understand how closely the world is approaching this goal of the Paris Agreement.     Rockdale County’s Innovative Approach to Rehabilitating an Aging Dam

    Proceedings of the 2007 Georgia Water Resources Conference, March 27-29, 2007, Athens, Georgia.Rockdale County, located just east of metro Atlanta, faced a potential problem with a privately owned farm pond in the middle of a commercial corridor when the State’s Safe Dams Program classified the earthen embankment as a high hazard structure and required upgrades to meet current safety standards. However, rather than burying its head in the sand and allowing the property owners to face the problems alone, Rockdale County responded with an innovative solution in the form of Regional Storm Water Detention. The approximate thirty-foot high dam was constructed in the 1950’s. The lake formed by the dam encompasses about five acres and the surrounding highly-developed, urban watershed is roughly 140 acres. The lake is situated between a State highway and a major urban arterial road with heavy commercial development to the north, east, and west. Residential communities have become established south of the dam leading to the State’s classification of the dam as a high hazard structure. Rather than facing a liability, Rockdale County seized an opportunity to improve the quality of life for the neighboring community. By acquiring the property and embarking on an effort to create a Regional Storm Water Detention Pond, the County found a way to rehabilitate the dam, improve water quality, reduce traffic congestion, potentially improve air quality, create an aesthetic recreational park for community gathering and educational opportunities, and also promote further development. In addition, Rockdale County found funding in the form of a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Grant to help achieve these goals. This paper describes Rockdale County’s multifaceted solution to the problems presented by the aging dam.     Embodied Discourses of Literacy in the Lives of Two Preservice Teachers

    This study examines the emerging teacher literacy identities of Ian and A.J., two preservice teachers in a graduate teacher education program in the United States. Using a poststructural feminisms theoretical framework, the study illustrates the embodiment of literacy pedagogy discourses in relation to the literacy courses’ discourse of comprehensive literacy and the literacy biographical discourses of Ian and A.J. The results of this study indicate the need to deconstruct how the discourse of comprehensive literacy limits how we, as literacy teacher educators, position, hear and respond to our preservice teachers and suggests the need for differentiation in our teacher education literacy courses

    Protocol for the development of guidance for stakeholder engagement in health and healthcare guideline development and implementation

    Stakeholder engagement has become widely accepted as a necessary component of guideline development and implementation. While frameworks for developing guidelines express the need for those potentially affected by guideline recommendations to be involved in their development, there is a lack of consensus on how this should be done in practice. Further, there is a lack of guidance on how to equitably and meaningfully engage multiple stakeholders. We aim to develop guidance for the meaningful and equitable engagement of multiple stakeholders in guideline development and implementation. METHODS: This will be a multi-stage project. The first stage is to conduct a series of four systematic reviews. These will (1) describe existing guidance and methods for stakeholder engagement in guideline development and implementation, (2) characterize barriers and facilitators to stakeholder engagement in guideline development and implementation, (3) explore the impact of stakeholder engagement on guideline development and implementation, and (4) identify issues related to conflicts of interest when engaging multiple stakeholders in guideline development and implementation. DISCUSSION: We will collaborate with our multiple and diverse stakeholders to develop guidance for multi-stakeholder engagement in guideline development and implementation. We will use the results of the systematic reviews to develop a candidate list of draft guidance recommendations and will seek broad feedback on the draft guidance via an online survey of guideline developers and external stakeholders. An invited group of representatives from all stakeholder groups will discuss the results of the survey at a consensus meeting which will inform the development of the final guidance papers. Our overall goal is to improve the development of guidelines through meaningful and equitable multi-stakeholder engagement, and subsequently to improve health outcomes and reduce inequities in health
