    Emotional impact and compassion fatigue in oncology nurses: results of a multicentre study

    Purpose: to assess the prevalence of Compassion Satisfaction, Compassion Fatigue (Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress) and anxiety in oncology nurses and the association with demographics, training, work-related conditions, and psychological factors. Method: a multicentre, cross-sectional study in 8 selected hospitals in Catalonia involving oncology nurses. Primary outcomes were Compassion Satisfaction and Compassion Fatigue (Burnout/Secondary Traumatic Stress), evaluated with the Professional Quality of Life questionnaire v.IV, and anxiety, evaluated with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results: of 297 participants, 18.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]:16.1-20.3) presented low Compassion Satisfaction; 20.2% (95% CI:18.0-22.4), high burnout; and 37.4% (95% CI:34.8-40.0), high Secondary Traumatic Stress. Trait and State Anxiety were high in 5.4% (95% CI:4.2-6.6) and 8.1% (95% CI:6.6-9.6) of participants, respectively. Nurses' desire to leave the unit was associated with high burnout (adjusted odds ratio [ORa] 3.7, 95% CI:1.9-7.5) and Secondary Traumatic Stress (ORa 3.2, 95% CI:1.9-5.3), while the desire to leave the profession was related to high State Anxiety (ORa 12.5, 95% CI:4.6-33.7). Most participants (96.9%) were interested in receiving emotional management training. Conclusions: continuous demands on oncology nurses' empathy can lead them to experience compassion fatigue, anxiety and a desire to leave the profession. The first study carried out with Spanish oncology nurses shows Compassion Fatigue is highly prevalent. This is related to nurses' desire to change units, leave their profession and has negative implications on staff satisfaction and quality of care. This problem justifies institutions support strategies for these professionals

    Documentant l'arqueologia: la casa de Massot Avengenà a l'alfòndec del call Major de Barcelona (carrer de Sant Honorat, núm. 3)

    El present article sintetitza l?estudi historicoartístic de les restes medievals trobades al jaciment arqueològic del subsòl del número 3 del carrer Sant Honorat de Barcelona, avui seu del Departament de la Presidència de la Generalitat de Catalunya, realitzat l?any 2009. Les estratigrafies més importants d?aquest excepcional jaciment ?juntament amb les d?època tardoromana? corresponen a una casa palau situada a l?alfòndec del call Major de Barcelona, de la qual es conserven bona part dels fonaments i diverses sitges de grans proporcions construïdes a mitjan segle xiii. A partir de les dades facilitades per l?arqueologia, de la bibliografia existent i de documentació arxivística parcialment inèdita, s?ha pogut reconstruir la història de la finca entre els segles xiv i xix, però sobretot en un període clau per a la història de la ciutat: el pogrom de 1391, la desaparició de l?aljama barcelonina i l?establiment de les elits urbanes cristianes a l?antic call. En aquell moment, la casa passà de mans del darrer propietari jueu, el financer Massot Avengenà, al primer estadant cristià, el jurista Pere de Rajadell.Documenting archaeology: Massot Avengenà?s house in the corn exchange in Barcelona?s call Major (number 3, Carrer de Sant Honorat). The article outlines the historical and artistic study carried out in 2009 on the medieval remains found at the archaeological site in the subsoil of number 3, Carrer Sant Honorat in Barcelona, where the Government of Catalonia?s Presidential Office is currently located. This exceptional site?s most important stratigraphies (alongside those from the late Roman period) correspond to a house/palace located in the corn exchange in Barcelona?s call Major (the largest section of the city?s medieval Jewish quarter). A significant portion of the building?s foundations have been preserved, along with a number of large silos constructed in the mid-13th century. The information obtained through archaeological work and the existing bibliography and partially unpublished archive documents have made it possible to reconstruct the history of the property between the 14th and 19th centuries, particularly during a key period in the city?s past, encompassing the pogrom of 1391, the disappearance of Barcelona?s aljama (a Spanish term of Arabic origin used in old official documents to designate self-governing communities of Moors and Jews living under Spanish rule) and the settling of the urban Christian elite in the old Jewish quarter. During this period, the house ceased to belong to the financier Massot Avengenà, its last Jewish owner, and became the property of the jurist Pere de Rajadell, its first Christian resident

    Metáforas sobre modelos educativos en Educación para la Salud: una propuesta de Aula de Salut.

    Las metáforas son un instrumento pedagógico y terapéutico para facilitar la comunicación y comprensión de temas relacionados con la salud-enfermedad. Objetivo: Presentar las metáforas que el equipo de “Aula de Salut” ha elaborado en base a la experiencia en formación de grado, posgrado y profesionales, intervención y asesoramiento en Educación para la Salud (EpS), con el fin de reflexionar y enseñar los modelos de intervención en EpS. Método: Se ha seguido la metodología de la investigación-acción de Mac Kernan. Resultados: Se han caracterizado cuatro tipologías distintas de profesionales de la salud en función de su modelo de intervención (botijo, maceta, látigo y matrona) con sus respectivas metáforas. A través de dichas metáforas se provoca la implicación, tanto del alumno como del profesional, permitiéndoles observar y analizar sus modelos de intervención para ayudarles a comprenderlos y mejorarlos. Conclusiones: Ha resultado ser una herramienta muy útil porque abre una vía de investigación en el campo de la EpS tanto en la práctica asistencial como en la formación de los profesionales de la salud. También constituye un elemento clave de comunicación al convertirse en un modo de transmitir el mensaje de forma más efectiva y, finalmente, se alzan como una herramienta de pensamiento al transformarse en un medio para ayudar a entender nuevas ideas, conceptos y métodos.Metaphors are a pedagogical and therapeutic tool to facilitate communication and understanding of issues related to health and disease. Objetive: To present the metaphors that the team of "Aula de Salut" has been developed based on experience in teaching graduates, post-graduates and professionals, intervention and counseling in Health Education (HE), to think and teach intervention models in HE. Methods: Has followed the methodology of action research Mac Kernan. Results: Has characterized four types of health professionals based on their model of intervention (jug, pot, whip and a midwife) with their metaphors. The use of the aforementioned metaphors are causes of the involving both students and professionals, allowing them to observe and analyze models of intervention to help them understand and improve outcomes. Conclusions: It has proved a very useful tool because it presents a means for researching in the field of HE both in terms of practical assistance and in training of health professionals. It is also a key element facilitating more effective communicationa and, finally, it presents as a way of thinking it becomes a vehicle for understanding new ideas, concepts and methods

    Hate Speech, Emotions, and Gender Identities : A Study of Social Narratives on Twitter with Trainee Teachers

    The objective of this study is, on the one hand, to analyse emotional responses to the construction of hate speech relating to gender identity on Twitter. On the other hand, the objective is to evaluate the capabilities of trainee primary education teachers at constructing alternative counter-narratives to this socially alive issue, surrounding the approval of the Ley de Identidad de Género [Gender Identity Law] in Chile, in 2018. With this two-fold objective in mind, quantitative, descriptive, and inferential analysis and qualitative analysis techniques are all applied. The results inform us of the influence of socially constructed emotions and feelings that are expressed in social narratives. However, the narratives of the participants neither appeared to reach satisfactory levels of reflection on the social issues that stirred their own emotional responses, nor on the conflict between reason and the value judgements that they expressed in the digital debate (counter-narratives). These results point to the need to consider both emotions and feelings, as categories of social analysis, and to reflect on their forms of expression within the framework of education for inclusive democratic citizenship

    Psychosomatic response to acute emotional stress in healthy students

    The multidimensionality of the stress response has shown the complexity of this phenomenon and therefore the impossibility of finding a unique biomarker among the physiological variables related to stress. An experimental study was designed and performed to guarantee the correct synchronous and concurrent measure of psychometric tests, biochemical variables and physiological features related to acute emotional stress. The population studied corresponds to a group of 120 university students between 20 and 30 years of age, with healthy habits and without a diagnosis of chronic or psychiatric illnesses. Following the protocol of the experimental pilot, each participant reached a relaxing state and a stress state in two sessions of measurement for equivalent periods. Both states are correctly achieved evidenced by the psychometric test results and the biochemical variables. A Stress Reference Scale is proposed based on these two sets of variables. Then, aiming for a non-invasive and continuous approach, the Acute Stress Model correlated to the previous scale is also proposed, supported only by physiological signals. Preliminary results support the feasibility of measuring/quantifying the stress level. Although the results are limited to the population and stimulus type, the procedure and methodological analysis used for the assessment of acute stress in young people can be extrapolated to other populations and types of stress

    The Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown on Adults with Major Depressive Disorder from Catalonia : A Decentralized Longitudinal Study

MTPM (7Z22/009) is partially released of clinical activity through a personal research grant of IDIAP Jordi Gol and Institut Català de la Salut (ICS).The present study analyzes the effects of each containment phase of the first COVID-19 wave on depression levels in a cohort of 121 adults with a history of major depressive disorder (MDD) from Catalonia recruited from 1 November 2019, to 16 October 2020. This analysis is part of the Remote Assessment of Disease and Relapse-MDD (RADAR-MDD) study. Depression was evaluated with the Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8), and anxiety was evaluated with the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Depression's levels were explored across the phases (pre-lockdown, lockdown, and four post-lockdown phases) according to the restrictions of Spanish/Catalan governments. Then, a mixed model was fitted to estimate how depression varied over the phases. A significant rise in depression severity was found during the lockdown and phase 0 (early post-lockdown), compared with the pre-lockdown. Those with low pre-lockdown depression experienced an increase in depression severity during the "new normality", while those with high pre-lockdown depression decreased compared with the pre-lockdown. These findings suggest that COVID-19 restrictions affected the depression level depending on their pre-lockdown depression severity. Individuals with low levels of depression are more reactive to external stimuli than those with more severe depression, so the lockdown may have worse detrimental effects on them

    Mapping of Schistosomiasis and Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis in the Regions of Centre, East and West Cameroon

    Schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) are a major public health problem in Cameroon. The national control strategy of these diseases was based on historical data collected 25 years ago, which might be outdated in some situations due to several factors including control activities, improved or degraded sanitation and hygiene, socio-economic improvement and disease transmission dynamics. To help planning, improving control strategies and evaluation of control activities, there was a need to update the distribution of schistosomiasis and STH. We conducted parasitological surveys in three regions of Cameroon, i.e. Centre, East and West. Our results showed a significant decrease of STH infection prevalence and intensities in all these three regions, in comparison to previous mapping data, with an overall decline of prevalence from 81.1–93% to 10.5–46.6%. These results show the positive impact of annual deworming campaigns, and illustrate the progressive success of the national programme for the control of schistosomiasis and STH in Cameroon. Furthermore, our results showed an increase of the number of high transmission foci of schistosomiasis, and allowed identifying new health districts requiring mass treatment with praziquantel, and those where deworming should be reinforced

    Compartir ideas. La universidad va al instituto es un proyecto de aprendizaje servicio transversal de la Universidad de Barcelona. Este representa una propuesta de aprendizaje servicio que bajo una estructura común permite la participación de estudiantes y profesorado de distintas disciplinas en un mismo proyecto. El aprendizaje servicio (ApS) es una propuesta formativa que permite el desarrollo de diferentes tipos de aprendizajes a partir de la implicación en necesidades sociales reales con la intención de transformarlas (Tapia, 2001; Martínez, 2008; Puig, 2009). En este tipo de proyectos están presentes simultáneamente la intencionalidad pedagógica y la intencionalidad solidaria. Se pueden definir como experiencias educativas solidarias protagonizadas por estudiantes, que tienen como objetivo atender a una necesidad de los destinatarios a la vez que planificar y mejorar la calidad de los aprendizajes (Tapia, 2006)
