This paper addresses the relevance of hyperlinks as a source of information, and it explains briefly the most promising techniques that can be used to mine data about online phenomena. So far studies in this field have focused on academic spaces, however this methodology is equally applicable to commercial sites which dominate the Web. This paper reviews studies that found that the number of links pointing to company websites correlates significantly with some company´s business performance measures. This finding may imply that links to a website could be used as an additional indicator of business performance. Nevertheless this research has some limitations such as the focus on the IT industry and on a limited amount of countries (e.g. USA, Canada and China). More exploratory research is needed in order to assess possible future developments in this area.webmetría, minería de datos en la web, rendimiento empresarial, ratios. webometrics, web data mining, business performance, ratios.
Patterns of Web Linking to Heterogeneous Groups of Companies: The Case of Stock Exchange Indexes
Purpose – To extend co-link analysis to Websites of heterogeneous companies belonging to different industries and countries. To cluster companies by industries and compare results from different countries.
Design/methodology/approach – Websites of 255 companies that belong to five stock exchange indexes were included in the study. Data on co-links pointing to these Websites were gathered using Yahoo!. Co-link data were analyzed using multidimensional scaling (MDS) to generate MDS maps that would position companies based on their co-link counts.
Findings –Comparisons of results across different countries and economies showed the following overall pattern: companies whose businesses are information based tend for form well defined clusters while companies operating on a more traditional business model tend not to form clear groups. A comparison between EU zone and the U.S. suggests that the EU economy is not well integrated yet.
Practical implications – Findings from the study suggest the possibility of using co-link analysis to distinguish the information based industries from traditional industries.
Originality/value –Extended co-link analysis from a single industry to heterogeneous industries with global and complex business phenomena
Social Labs in Universities: Innovation and impact in Medialab UGR
de establecer indicadores que concilien tanto intereses académicos como socialesSocial laboratories, defined as experimental spaces for co-creation, have recently become the main centers of innovation.
Medialabs are experimental laboratories of technologies and communication media which have co-evolved along with the digital
society into mediation laboratories of citizen experimentation, observing a confluence of both models. In recent years, these centers
have expanded within the higher education context, generating new forms of innovation and posing the question of how to
measure the impact of such open spaces. This paper analyzes the origin and development of social laboratories in Spain. It first
reviews their historical development from their antecedents in the 19th Century to the most recent initiatives. It focuses specifically
on initiatives launched within the university context, highlighting their role as motors of innovation. Then, it presents the case of
Medialab UGR, a co-creation and digital culture center of social collaboration framed in the digital context. Finally, it offers a first
approach towards the assessment of its social impact by using Twitter and analyzes its capacity to mobilize and reach non-academic
audiences. The findings show the plurality of actors involved in this type of networks as well as the difficulty and complexity
of the task for the development of indicators that can comprise both, academic and social interest
Policy labs in Europe: political innovation, structure and content analysis on Twitter
Recent years have seen a veritable boom in the creation of policy labs. These institution-based innvation laboratories aim to open up the processes of public policy design to the social stakeholders involved. In 2016, the European Union Policy Lab commissioned a report that identified 64 such laboratories in Europe. In the present study, we use network analysis to reveal the structure of the relationships between the 42 of these labs that have a presence on Twitter. We then conduct a content analysis of their tweets to identify the topics of interest. Our results describe a fragmented, country-based network and the principal concepts and key issues addressed by these institutions
A View on Personal Learning Environments through Approaches to Learning
This work was partially supported by the Junta de Andalucía – FEDER (Proyectos de Excelencia: SEJ-02670) and by the program “Educational Innovation Project” supported by the University of Granada (Spain). In the past years the impact of social media in students in Higher Education has been remarkably significant (Pew Research Center, 2010; Tapscott, 2009). In order to exploit the potential benefits of these tools on education, we carried out different experiments using wikis and private social networks. Although the results were positive, we decided to move towards a more open approach using tools not directly linked to educational purposes. This paper reports on an experience in the use of Personal Learning Environments (PLE) to develop competences needed by students for lifelong learning. PLE is a concept that refers to the set of tools, devices, connections and networks that we used to learn. Nowadays building a digital PLE is key to achieve the goals set by the European Union.
The main objective of the paper is to analyse the influence of the approaches to learning of students in the reported effects of the PLE as well as in relevant aspects of the learning process.
245 students enrolled in a course on International Accounting participated in the experience of developing their own digital PLE. Some of the activities proposed used social networks, Twitter, blogs and wikis. The data were gathered through a web based questionnaire in two steps: 1) to obtain a priori self-confidence measures regarding communication in academic tasks and web related tasks, and 2) to obtain a measure of the approaches to learning of the students and self-confidence measures.
According to students’ opinion, the experience was deemed as positive. In order to check the relationships between the impact of the experience and the approach to learning of students, a cluster analysis was performed. Students were classified into two groups. The cluster #1 presents lower scores on deep approach and higher scores on surface approach than students classified into cluster #2. Comparing the scores obtained in all the aspects of learning between the two groups, many differences arise. Students in the deep approach group indicated a significant higher impact in all measured aspects.
Results suggest that certain a type of students, more flexible and likely to manage information in their own, is able to use PLEs more effectively to learn than those who present a more pragmatic orientation focussed on passing the course

Ciencias sociales y humanidades digitales: Una visión introductoria
Using social network sites in higher education: an experience in business studies
[ENG]In the past 5 years the impact of the Web 2.0 in new generations has been remarkably significant (Pew Research Center,
2010). This paper reports on an experience in the use of Social Network Sites (SNS) to support student involvement
with the subject and to develop basic skills.
According to students’ opinion, the experience was deemed as positive. They considered that the experience contributed
to a higher engagement with the subject and a deeper collaboration with other students and teaching staff. As a result,
the majority of students would prefer the use of SNS as a first option if they had to enrol again in the subject.
Regarding the relationships between academic performance and use of the SNS, two different student profiles were
identified based on usage patterns of the platform. Students with a more intensive use of the site showed a significantly
better performance than students with a low usage profile.Campus Mare Nostrum, Universidad Politécnica de Cartagena, Universidad de Murcia, Región de Murci
