A better Globalisation Fund

In their policy brief, visiting Bruegel Scholar Etienne Wasmer and Research Fellow Jakob von Weizsäcker argue for wage insurance and mobility allowances for trade-displaced workers as two simple active labour market schemes that can be addressed by the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. They also argue for establishing sound precedents, strengthened eligibility rules and a scientific evaluation of the results of these schemes in order to decide if the programme should be continued beyond 2013.

The mass and energy budget of Cassiopeia A

Further analysis of X-ray spectroscopy results recently obtained from the MOS CCD cameras on-board XMM-Newton provides a detailed description of the hot and cool X-ray emitting plasma in Cas A. Measurement of the Doppler broadening of the X-ray lines is consistent with the expected ion velocities, ~1500 km/s along the line of sight, in the post shock plasma. Assuming a constant total pressure throughout the remnant we estimate the total remnant mass as 10 Msun and the total thermal energy as 7E43 J. We derive the differential mass distribution as a function of ionisation age for both X-ray emitting components. This distribution is consistent with a hot component dominated by swept up mass heated by the primary shock and a cool component which are ablated clumpy ejecta material which were and are still being heated by interaction with the preheated swept up material. We calculate a balanced mass and energy budget for the supernova explosion giving 1E44 J in ejected mass; approximately 0.4 Msun of the ejecta were diffuse with an initial rms velocity of 15000 km/s while the remaining ~1.8 Msun were clumpy with an initial rms velocity of ~2400 km/s. Using the Doppler velocity measurements of the X-ray spectral lines we can project the mass into spherical coordinates about the remnant. This provides quantitative evidence for mass and energy beaming in the supernova explosion. The mass and energy occupy less than 4.5 sr (<40 % of the available solid angle) around the remnant and 64 % of the mass occurs in two jets within 45 degrees of a jet axis. We calculate a swept up mass of 7.9 Msun in the emitting plasma and estimate that the total mass lost from the progenitor prior to the explosion could be as high as ~20 Msun.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysic

The Triboindenter present many advantages for the measurement of friction and wear at the nanoscale. A reciprocating multi-cycle linear test can be programmed, from where it is possible to obtain simultaneously the friction force and wear rate from the lateral force and vertical displacement sensors, respectively. The friction values have high precision but the wear data is usually wrong in long duration tests because the drift rate is only measured just before the test start. Alternatively, one can program the SPM scanning mode of the instrument with a high load in order to produce the wear of the surface. At the end of the experiment, a squared hole is produced which can be measured using the SPM facility of the system. However, this wear experiment does not allow the simultaneous measurement of the friction coefficient.In this talk I will present a new methodology to measure in-situ the friction and wear of thin films using a Triboindenter TI-950 from Hysitron. I will show how the possible changes of drift rate during long-time tests can be overcome, obtaining simultaneous precise values of friction and wear rate as a function of time. I will discuss how the Triboimage® software can be adapted to this methodology in order to get realistic values of friction and wear. Finally I will show some results for soft (H &lt; 1GPa) Pb films and very hard (H ~ 35 GPa) nitride coating

Tècnica de grup d'experts aplicat a l'assignatura de materials

L’assignatura de Ciència i Enginyeria de Materials està integrada per continguts de diferents matèries que són difícils d’impartir alhora durant un quadrimestre. Un tema que sovint es deixa per a l’última part del curs, és el de materials ceràmics, quan ja no queda massa temps perquè l’alumnat adquireixi els coneixements necessaris. En aquest treball es resumeix una experiència d’aprenentatge actiu basada en la tècnica dels grups d’experts sobre materials ceràmics. Els punts forts de l’activitat són que permet iniciar el tema de materials ceràmics sense que l’alumnat tingui tots els coneixements previs. L’activitat es comença a meitat de curs, utilitzant poc temps de les classes expositives. Al final del quadrimestre, quan l’alumnat ja té assolits els coneixements previs per al tema de materials ceràmics, s’hi destinen dues sessions més. L’experiència d’aprenentatge actiu es basa en que, primer de tot, l’alumnat tria un material ceràmic que li resulti peculiar, amb el vist-i-plau del professorat. Durant el curs, s’estudia el material seleccionat amb l’ajuda del professorat en forma de grups d’expertesa en un material ceràmic concret. Un cop estudiats els materials, s’ha de fer una exposició oral davant altres companys/es, creant nous grups formats per un expert en cada material estudiat. En l’avaluació es tenen en compte només dos conceptes: els coneixements adquirits pel propi estudiant i pels altres experts/es. El fet que l’alumne/a sigui responsable amb un 50% de la nota dels altres fa que tingui una forta implicació a l’adquirir els coneixements. La tècnica de grups d’experts dóna la oportunitat de treballar les competències de treball en equip, capacitat de síntesi i anàlisi i comunicació oral.Postprint (published version
