    THE TIME OF POLITICS, THE POLITICS OF TIME, AND POLITICIZED TIME: AN INTRODUCTION TO CHRONOPOLITICS

    Time is so deeply interwoven with all aspects of politics that its centrality to the political is frequently overlooked. For one, politics has its own times and rhythms. Secondly, time can be an object and an instrument of politics. Thirdly, temporal attributes are used not only to differentiate basic political principles but also to legitimize or delegitimize politics. Finally, politics aims at realizing futures in the present or preventing them from materializing. Consequently, the relationship between politics and time encompasses a broad spectrum of phenomena and processes that cry out for historicization. In our introduction to this History and Theory theme issue on chronopolitics, we argue that the concept of chronopolitics makes it possible to do this and, in the process, to move the operation of rethinking historical temporalities from the periphery toward the center of historiographical attention as well as to engage in a dialogue with scholars from a wide range of disciplines. To this end, we propose a broad concept of chronopolitics by discussing existing definitions, by distinguishing between three central dimensions of chronopolitics (the time of politics, the politics of time, and politicized time), and by systematizing possible approaches to studying chronopolitics

    Use of peas in organic buffalo farming: effects on nutrient digestibility and milk production

    Twenty lactating buffalo cows, organically farmed, were used to examine the effects of including peas in total mixed ration. Two concentrates were formulated to contain, as the main protein sources, either 350 g/kg of soybean cake (CC) or 450 g/kg of peas (ExpC). Cows were blocked into two groups according to parity and previous milk yield and were assigned to one of two dietary treatments: one group was fed a diet with 6 kg/d of CC, whereas the treatment group was fed diet in which 3kg/d of CC were replaced by an equal quantity of ExpC. Digestibility of the diets and milk production of the cows were measured. The experimental period covered the whole lactation period. No differences were observed between groups for milk yield and composition, and for total tract apparent digestibility. The main hypothesis tested, that the replacement of soybean cake with peas in buffalo diet would not affect milk yield and composition, was confirmed. This suggested that the partial substitution of soybean cake with peas in diet for buffalo cows can be possible without affect performances

    Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) : evaluation of thyroid and taste

    Background Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a chronic, intraoral burning sensation seen mainly in middle-aged and post-menopausal females, without identifiable oral lesions or abnormal laboratory findings, but often associated with psychogenic disorders such as depression. The latter can have a range of causes, including hormonal. Objective Since there may be connections between BMS, psychogenic changes, hormonal changes and taste abnormalities , we have examined aspects of taste and thyroid function.. Patients and methods We selected 50 patients with BMS (study group) and 50 healthy subjects (control group) and analysed their ability to taste bitter, acid and spicy substances and analysed their thyroid function and Undertook thyroid echography. Results Taste sensation was normal in all controls. However, 30 of the patients with BMS reported ageusia for bitter taste and 2 had ageusia for acid. The use of pepper sauce ( Tabasco®) (spicy substance) produced a strong burning to the tongue in 28 patients of the BMS group but only in 10 controls. No control patients showed abnormality of thyroid function or echograpic abnormality. Five patients in the BMS group had biochemical evidence of hypothyroidism, 4 patients had raised levels of thyroid autoantibodies and, of the 41 remaining BMS patients, most (34) had thyroid echographic changes indicative of nodularity. Conclusions Hypothyroidism may be responsible for a negative influence on taste and consequent increase in trigeminal sensorial sensation (tactile, thermal and painful sensation)

    An application of conversational systems to promote healthy lifestyle habits

    Recent reports indicate the multiple benefits of adopting conversational systems for healthcare, providing automation of management tasks in overburdened healthcare systems, improved patient experiences, and better efficiency and productivity rates. In this paper, we describe a conversational system aimed at promoting healthy lifestyle habits related to nutrition and physical exercise. The system has been developed using Google’s Dialogflow platform and the combination of different APIs and data repositories in the cloud. It has been integrated in the Facebook Messenger instant messaging platform. The results of the preliminary assessment of the system through a subjective questionnaire show the high degree of satisfaction of the users with the functionalities provided and the help offered to allow fulfilling the predefined objectives

    Chemical-Physical Characterization of Stava Tailings Subjected to an Innovative Aging Technique

    Tailing dams are realized to store the waste products resulting from the mining extraction processes. These complex geotechnical structures should be designed taking into account long-term stability and long-term properties of the deposited materials. Depending on the interactions between source mineralogy and local conditions, tailing wastes can undergo aging processes with chemical and physical modifications. Recently, in many countries tailing wastes are re-used as feedstock for cement and concrete, backfill or landscaping material, so if any, the long-term chemical and physical modifications could affect the hydro-mechanic response of tailings, resulting in relevant environmental and economic consequences. An increased interlocking of particles and oxidation, sometimes making previously safely held contaminants available and mobile, are recognized as common aging processes. Among the long-term aging processes, the natural ionizing radiation due to ultraviolet rays or cosmic rays can be considered. Moving from these reasons, this paper presents an innovative accelerated aging technique to simulate the natural ionizing radiation from the sun. Tailing fluorite ore samples collected form the collapsed Stava dams (Italy) were characterized in dry and wet conditions, before and after the gamma rays treatment. Stava silty tailings showed some physical modifications in terms of specific surface, size particle distribution and inner porosity of the particles, while they revealed a certain chemical stability

    Numerical control matrix rotation for the LINC-NIRVANA Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics system

    LINC-NIRVANA will realize the interferometric imaging focal station of the Large Binocular Telescope. A double Layer Oriented multi-conjugate adaptive optics system assists the two arms of the interferometer, supplying high order wave-front correction. In order to counterbalance the field rotation, mechanical derotation for the two ground wave-front sensors, and optical derotators for the mid-high layers sensors fix the positions of the focal planes with respect to the pyramids aboard the wave-front sensors. The derotation introduces pupil images rotation on the wavefront sensors: the projection of the deformable mirrors on the sensor consequently change. The proper adjustment of the control matrix will be applied in real-time through numerical computation of the new matrix.
