    Enhancement in the Photoluminescence Properties of SiO2:Ge Embedded in a Polymeric Matrix

    Polymer films of styrene butadiene copolymer (SBC) mixed with SiO2:Ge powder were successfully obtained by the drop casting method. The SBC concentration (in chloroform solution) was 10%w/v and the SiO2:Ge powder was mixed (mass ratio 80:20 respectively). The thicknesses of the films obtained were 50, 100, and 200 μm. In addition, polymer films of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) preparation (60% dispersion in water), were obtained mixing 2 ml of PTFE and 0.05g of SiO2:Ge powder with a mass relation of 98% polymer and 2% SiO2:Ge. The photoluminescence emission spectra (PL) of SBC doped with SiO2:Ge resulted in similar characteristics to those for SiO2:Ge powders, although their intensity shows an increase 3.5 times approximately, compared with the pure powder. On the other hand, the PTFE films with SiO2:Ge present just one peak in the PL emission at 439 nm but their intensity increases 18 times respect to the powder. The photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of the SiO2:Ge powders show the characteristic peaks at 248 nm (most intense) and at 366 nm. However, when the powder is embedded either in SBC or PTFE the peak at 366 nm shows an important increase which seems to indicate an energy transfer from the polymer to the SiO2:Ge

    Mid-infrared imaging- and spectro-polarimetric subarcsecond observations of NGC 1068

    We present sub-arcsecond 7.5−-13 μ\mum imaging- and spectro-polarimetric observations of NGC 1068 using CanariCam on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio CANARIAS. At all wavelengths, we find: (1) A 90 ×\times 60 pc extended polarized feature in the northern ionization cone, with a uniform ∼\sim44∘^{\circ} polarization angle. Its polarization arises from dust and gas emission in the ionization cone, heated by the active nucleus and jet, and further extinguished by aligned dust grains in the host galaxy. The polarization spectrum of the jet-molecular cloud interaction at ∼\sim24 pc from the core is highly polarized, and does not show a silicate feature, suggesting that the dust grains are different from those in the interstellar medium. (2) A southern polarized feature at ∼\sim9.6 pc from the core. Its polarization arises from a dust emission component extinguished by a large concentration of dust in the galaxy disc. We cannot distinguish between dust emission from magnetically aligned dust grains directly heated by the jet close to the core, and aligned dust grains in the dusty obscuring material surrounding the central engine. Silicate-like grains reproduce the polarized dust emission in this feature, suggesting different dust compositions in both ionization cones. (3) An upper limit of polarization degree of 0.3 per cent in the core. Based on our polarization model, the expected polarization of the obscuring dusty material is ≲\lesssim0.1 per cent in the 8−-13 μ\mum wavelength range.     Unsaturated fatty acids are inhibitors of bacterial conjugation

    This report describes a high-throughput assay to identify substances that reduce the frequency of conjugation in Gram-negative bacteria. Bacterial conjugation is largely responsible for the spread of multiple antibiotic resistances in human pathogens. Conjugation inhibitors may provide a means to control the spread of antibiotic resistance. An automated conjugation assay was developed that used plasmid R388 and a laboratory strain of Escherichia coli as a model system, and bioluminescence as a reporter for conjugation activity. Frequencies of conjugation could be measured continuously in real time by the amount of light produced, and thus the effects of inhibitory compounds could be determined quantitatively. A control assay, run in parallel, allowed elimination of compounds affecting cell growth, plasmid stability or gene expression. The automated conjugation assay was used to screen a database of more than 12 000 microbial extracts known to contain a wide variety of bioactive compounds (the NatChem library). The initial hit rate was 1·4 %. From these, 48 extracts containing active compounds and representing a variety of organisms and extraction conditions were subjected to fractionation (24 fractions per extract). The 52 most active fractions were subjected to a secondary analysis to determine the range of plasmid inhibition. Plasmids R388, R1 and RP4 were used as representatives of a variety of plasmid transfer systems. Only one fraction (of complex composition) affected transfer of all three plasmids, while four other fractions were active against two of them. Two separate compounds were identified from these fractions: linoleic acid and dehydrocrepenynic acid. Downstream analysis showed that the chemical class of unsaturated fatty acids act as true inhibitors of conjugation

    Radon measurements were collected over a period of nine months in the area of the ancient Cuexcomate geyser, in Puebla City. For measuring radon, the passive method of nuclear tracks in solids was used, using polycarbonate CR-39 as radiation sensitive material. Radon concentrations varied in strong anti-correlation with the rainfall intensity. And are lower compared to other locations, in concordance with the stratigraphic composition, as travertine and deposits of volcanic origin, corresponding to the geyser chemical composition and the active environment in the north part of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt with an andesitic and basalt composition

    Slanted Stixels: A way to represent steep streets

    This work presents and evaluates a novel compact scene representation based on Stixels that infers geometric and semantic information. Our approach overcomes the previous rather restrictive geometric assumptions for Stixels by introducing a novel depth model to account for non-flat roads and slanted objects. Both semantic and depth cues are used jointly to infer the scene representation in a sound global energy minimization formulation. Furthermore, a novel approximation scheme is introduced in order to significantly reduce the computational complexity of the Stixel algorithm, and then achieve real-time computation capabilities. The idea is to first perform an over-segmentation of the image, discarding the unlikely Stixel cuts, and apply the algorithm only on the remaining Stixel cuts. This work presents a novel over-segmentation strategy based on a Fully Convolutional Network (FCN), which outperforms an approach based on using local extrema of the disparity map. We evaluate the proposed methods in terms of semantic and geometric accuracy as well as run-time on four publicly available benchmark datasets.
