Live Demonstration: Real-time neuro-inspired sound source localization and tracking architecture applied to a robotic platform

    Get PDF
This live demonstration presents a sound source localization and tracking system implemented with Spike Signal Processing (SSP) building blocks on FPGA devices. The system architecture is based on the ability of the mammalian auditory system to locate the direction of a sound in the horizontal plane using the interaural intensity difference. We used a binaural Neuromorphic Auditory Sensor to obtain spike rates similar to those generated by the inner hair cells of the human auditory system and the component that obtains the interaural intensity difference is inspired by the lateral superior olive. The spike stream that represents the interaural intensity difference is used to turn a robotic platform towards the sound source direction. The system was tested with pure tones (1-kHz, 2.5-kHz and 5- kHz sounds) with an average error of 2.32 degrees.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TEC2016-77785-

IMS Learning Design is a pedagogically neutral specification that allows the creation of environments and educational contents and that promotes the reusability. Furthermore, this specification allows a large range of didactic approaches. IMS Learning is particularly suitable for distance learning through electronic platforms. In addition, there is great interest in using these types of standards in face-to-face and blended learning at universities. However, there are some difficulties that must be overcome when considering these solutions in universities, for example, those related to the computing skills of potential uses, those associated to the usability of editing tools for Learning Units creation, or those linked to human resource costs… This article deals with these issues by analysing the usefulness and usability of two tools based on Learning Design, GDUS + and LAMS, to create virtual Learning Units according to specific pedagogical design approaches.IMS-Learning Design es una especificación pedagógicamente neutral que permite la creación de escenarios y contenidos educativos promoviendo la reusabilidad y permitiendo un amplio abanico de enfoques didácticos.

Heparin and the solubilization of asymmetric acetylcholinesterase

    Get PDF
AbstractHeparin solubilizes asymmetric acetylcholinesterase, from chick skeletal muscle and retina, as a 24 S complex which is quantitatively converted to conventional asymmetric molecular forms of the enzyme (A12 and A8, either class I or class II) upon exposure to high salt. The simultaneous presence of salt and heparin in the homogenization medium selectively prevents, however, the release of class II A-forms in both muscle and retina. Heparin may generally act by displacing native proteoglycans involved in the attachment of the enzyme tail to the extracellular matrix, or its neural equivalent, being in turn removed by salt to yield typical asymmetric enzyme forms. Heparin would also appear to displace some other molecules specifically involved in the EDTA-sensitive attachment of class II tailed forms, this effect being antagonized by salt

Cyanobacteria and Microalgae in the Production of Valuable Bioactive Compounds

In the last decades, an increasing attention has been directed toward the possibilities of growing algae commercially. This interest has been partially due to the fact that some strains of microalgae and cyanobacteria have demonstrated the ability to produce a variety of bioactive products. Both, primary and secondary metabolism of these microorganisms has been demonstrated to play a key role in the production of special chemicals. Antioxidants, for instance, can be produced by some algal strains to protect photosynthetic cells from oxidative stress. Microalgae can produce a variety of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids with clear health benefits for human nutrition. Potential products obtained from cyanobacteria and microalgae exhibiting interesting medical properties include polysaccharides, glycerol, glycoproteins, and antibiotics. From the aforementioned products, especially relevant has become the search of new antibiotics. The potential spread of bacterial resistance and the foreseen decrease on efficiency on antibiotics, has largely stimulated the research on novel antibiotics sources. Among these sources, cyanobacteria and microalgae have demonstrated a vast and just barely explored potential

A Review of Chitosan-Based Materials for the Removal of Organic Pollution from Water and Bioaugmentation

Chitin is a natural polymer extracted mostly from shrimp or crab shells and is the Earth’s second most abundant polysaccharide. After a simple deacetylation procedure, chitin is converted into chitosan that consists in a polysaccharide structure of deacetylated-β-glucosamine. Chitosan has been largely employed in wastewater treatment the removal of colloids through coagulation-flocculation processes. Different chitosan based materials have been produced and tested in the removal of inorganic pollutants such as toxic metals and metalloids, nutrients, dyes, micropollutants and hydrocarbons. Sorbents such as magnetic-activated carbon chitosan have been successfully tested in the removal of antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and amoxicillin) from water. Raw chitosan and ZnO nanoparticles entrapped in chitosan have demonstrated an excellent potential for the removal of the insecticide permethrin from aqueous effluents. Chitin and chitosan in flake and powder form have also demonstrated a promising effectiveness in the removal of oil spilled in seawater. Superhydrophobic and superoleophilic sponges modified by thioles have been also prepared from chitosan and used for the removal of oil spills. Chitosan hydrogels have been tested as well as entrapment matrices for the immobilization of hydrocarbon-degrading biomass for oil spills. Strains such as R. corynebacteriorides (QBTo), Bacillus subtilis LAMI008 and B. pumilus have been successfully immobilized and employed in hydrocarbon degradation processes. In this book chapter, the use of chitosan and chitosan-based materials in the removal of organic pollutants from water is reviewed
