A Single Scalar Field Model of Dark Energy with Equation of State Crossing -1
In this paper we study the possibility of building models of dark energy with
equation of state across -1 and propose explicitly a model with a single scalar
field which gives rise to an equation of state larger than -1 in the past and
less than -1 at the present time, consistent with the current observations.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, the version accepted by JCAP, presentation

Gauged Linear Sigma Models for toroidal orbifold resolutions
Toroidal orbifolds and their resolutions are described within the framework
of (2,2) Gauged Linear Sigma Models (GLSMs). Our procedure describes two-tori
as hypersurfaces in (weighted) projective spaces. The description is chosen
such that the orbifold singularities correspond to the zeros of their
homogeneous coordinates. The individual orbifold singularities are resolved
using a GLSM guise of non-compact toric resolutions, i.e. replacing discrete
orbifold actions by Abelian worldsheet gaugings. Given that we employ the same
global coordinates for both the toroidal orbifold and its resolutions, our GLSM
formalism confirms the gluing procedure on the level of divisors discussed by
Lust et al. Using our global GLSM description we can study the moduli space of
such toroidal orbifolds as a whole. In particular, changes in topology can be
described as phase transitions of the underlying GLSM. Finally, we argue that
certain partially resolvable GLSMs, in which a certain number of fixed points
can never be resolved, might be useful for the study of mini-landscape orbifold
MSSMs.Comment: 71 pages, 2 figure
Expression of the proapoptotic protein Bid is an adverse prognostic factor for radiotherapy outcome in carcinoma of the cervix
The Bcl-2 family of apoptotic regulators is thought to play an essential role in cancer development and influence the sensitivity of tumour cells to radiotherapy. Bid is an abundantly expressed Bcl-2 family protein playing a central role in various pathways of apoptosis by integrating and converging signals at the mitochondria. The relevance of apoptotic modulation by Bcl-2 and related proteins in tumour development and radiation response for human tumours remains undefined. Therefore, a study was made regarding the expression of Bid in patients with locally advanced cervix carcinoma who received radiotherapy. Bid expression was assessed using immunohistochemistry in pretreatment archival biopsies from 98 patients. The data were correlated with clinicopathologic characteristics and treatment outcome. Pretreatment tumour radiosensitivity data were available for 60 patients. Strong Bid expression was associated with a patient age less than the median of 52 years (P=0.034) and poor metastasis-free survival. In multivariate analysis, after allowing for stage, Bid expression was a significant prognostic factor for both disease-specific and metastasis-free survival (P=0.026). It is concluded that strong tumour Bid expression is associated with poor outcome following radiotherapy regardless of intrinsic tumour cell radiosensitivity, and is adverse prognostic for disease-specific and metastasis-free survival in younger patients
Physics with the KLOE-2 experiment at the upgraded DANE
Investigation at a --factory can shed light on several debated issues
in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and
experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in
the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum
Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for
improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of
kaons and eta/eta mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the
nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow
di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter
sector. We also report on the physics in the continuum with the
measurements of (multi)hadronic cross sections and the study of gamma gamma
processes.Comment: 60 pages, 41 figures; added affiliation for one of the authors; added

Prospects for e+e- physics at Frascati between the phi and the psi
We present a detailed study, done in the framework of the INFN 2006 Roadmap,
of the prospects for e+e- physics at the Frascati National Laboratories. The
physics case for an e+e- collider running at high luminosity at the phi
resonance energy and also reaching a maximum center of mass energy of 2.5 GeV
is discussed, together with the specific aspects of a very high luminosity
tau-charm factory. Subjects connected to Kaon decay physics are not discussed
here, being part of another INFN Roadmap working group. The significance of the
project and the impact on INFN are also discussed. All the documentation
related to the activities of the working group can be found in

String Theory as a diffusing System
Recent results on the effective non-local dynamics of the tachyon mode of
open string field theory (OSFT) show that approximate solutions can be
constructed which obey the diffusion equation. We argue that this structure is
inherited from the full theory, where it admits a universal formulation. In
fact, all known exact OSFT solutions are superpositions of diffusing surface
states. In particular, the diffusion equation is a spacetime manifestation of
OSFT gauge symmetries.Comment: 1+39 pages, 1 figure; v2: section 4 expanded, main result clarified

On Moduli Stabilisation and de Sitter Vacua in MSSM Heterotic Orbifolds
We study the problem of moduli stabilisation in explicit heterotic orbifold
compactifications, whose spectra contain the MSSM plus some vector-like exotics
that can be decoupled. Considering all the bulk moduli, we obtain the 4D low
energy effective action for the compactification, which has contributions from
various, computable, perturbative and non-perturbative effects. Hidden sector
gaugino condensation and string worldsheet instantons result in a combination
of racetrack, KKLT and cusp-form contributions to the superpotential, which
lift all the bulk moduli directions. We point out the properties observed in
our concrete models, which tend to be missed when only "generic" features of a
model are assumed. We search for interesting vacua and find several de Sitter
solutions, but -- so far -- they all turn out to be unstable.Comment: 55 pages, 2 figures, v2: added link to mathematica files, other minor
