    The role of women in the juxtaposition between Islam and political Islam: unveiling Arabian nights

    The resurgence of Islamic Fundamentalism determined a new wave of interest about Muslim countries; Islam became a privileged category of analysis to investigate the commitment of these countries through a democratic path. Women's role in Islam is extremely relevant since the relationship between religion and gender issues has become a fertile ground of discussion in academia, and also in local and transnational politics, in colonial and postcolonial analysis, in the affirmation of economic and political powers, and in the definition of identities. This Master thesis unfolds some pivotal issues to highlight the Quran and the Sunnah’s gender egalitarian attitude. Thus Sharia is enforced on the base of an ahistorical and patriarchal interpretation of the sacred texts. Moreover, there is not only one Political Islam, and women’s living conditions vary notably from country to country, from region to region. This work aims at understanding the miscellany, the variety, the juxtaposition among Islamic morals and legislation in three case studies: Hezbollah, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. Additionally, it tries to overcome several dualities offering an approach to a society founded on the Ethic of Care, on Progressive Islam and Islamic Feminism, on the base that each human being is different from others and that differences enrich us.O ressurgimento do Fundamentalismo Islâmico determinou um novo interesse pelos países muçulmanos. O Islão tornou-se um foco de análise para estudar o compromisso desses países para o caminho da democracia. O papel das mulheres no Islão é de suprema importância, até porque a interrelação entre religião e questões de género é matéria fértil não só na discussão acadêmica, mas também nas políticas nacionais/transnacionais, análises colonialistas e pós-colonialistas, na afirmação de poderes políticos e económicos, e na definição de identidades. Esta tese de Mestrado foca-se em temáticas essenciais que realçam a igualdade de género no Alcorão e na Sunnah, a pesar de que a Sharia é cumprida com base numa interpretação histórica e patriarcal dos textos sagrados. Não há um único Islã político e a condição das mulheres varia de país para país, de região para região. Este trabalho visa uma melhor compreensão da miscelânea, da variedade, da sobreposição da moral e da legislação no mundo Islâmico a partir do estudo do Hezbollah, do Hamas e da Irmandade Muçulmana.     Cultivar ideotype for intensive olive orchards: plant vigor, biomass partitioning, tree architecture and fruiting characteristics

    In order to achieve higher and earlier yield, modern olive orchards are increasingly intensified, with tree densities up to > 1500 trees hectare-1. With increasing tree densities, individual-tree canopy volume must be proportionally reduced. Not all cultivars are adaptable to high and very high orchard densities, because of excessive vigor and/or insufficient bearing when the canopy is pruned to a small volume. However, what makes an olive cultivar suitable for intensive and super intensive orchards is not clear. Recently, few studies have addressed this topic, suggesting that tree architecture and early bearing are essential traits. Yet, what architectural and productive features are important, how they work and whether they are interrelated remains elusive. This review summarizes and interprets the literature on olive, as well as the more abundant literature available for other fruit species, aiming to provide a comprehensive knowledge framework for understanding how tree architectural characteristics, plant vigor, and fruiting vary across olive genotypes, and how they are interconnected. It is concluded that, among the architectural characteristics, greater branching and smaller diameters of woody structures are particularly important features for cultivar suitability to intensive and super intensive olive orchards. Greater branching allows to produce more fruiting sites in the small volume of canopy allowed in these systems. It also reduces investments in woody structures, liberating resources for fruiting. Additional resources are liberated with smaller structure diameters. Greater branching also increases resources by increasing biomass partitioning into leaves (i.e. the photosynthetic organs), relative to wood. Since yield is affected by the competition for resources with vegetative growth, reducing resource investments in woody structures and/or increasing resource directly, increases yield. Yield, in turn, depresses vegetative growth, reducing vigor and the need for pruning. High yields also produce short shoots which have relatively greater investments in leaf mass and area, and lower in the woody stem, making them more suitable than long shoots to support concurrent fruit growth. This single framework of interpretation of how the different architectural and fruiting characteristics work and interact with one-another, will provide guidance for cultivar selection and breeding for intensive and super intensive olive orchards

    Hepatic abscess caused by trans-gastric migration of a fishbone

    Background Stomach or duodenal perforation due to foreign body are usually associated with the development of a walled-off abdominal mass or abscess, and are less prone to cause systemic signs of infection. Methods and Case presentation A 65-year-old man with no comorbidities was admitted for rapid onset of abdominal discomfort, fever, and chills. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) showed an 8 cm abscess in the left lobe of the liver. The lesion was aspirated under ultrasound guidance; cultures from the abscess grew Streptococcus constellatus. Chest CT scan, colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and blood cultures were negative. The patient’s clinical status rapidly improved with antibiotic therapy, but a follow-up CT scan revealed the presence of a thin, 3 cm-long radiopaque object at the site of the previous abscess. A few months later, due to symptomatic cholelithiasis, the patient underwent elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy and concurrent removal of a 3 cm-long fishbone, which was embedded into the wall of the gastric antrum and the third segment of the liver, the latter which was partially resected. Results The small gastrotomy was reapproximated with a single resorbable stitch. The post-operative course was uneventful and at 6 month follow up, the patient was asymptomatic without evidence of residual abdominal pathology. Conclusions Asymptomatic perforation of the gastric wall by an ingested foreign body can occur and be subsequently complicated by a liver abscess. A contained perforation can be successfully managed conservatively

    Resistance and resilience of ecosystem descriptors and properties to dystrophic events: a study case in a Mediterranean lagoon

    Mediterranean lagoons are naturally exposed, during the dry season, to dystrophic and hypoxic events determining dis-equilibrium conditions along temporal and spatial scales, which are linked to metabolism and life cycle of the biotic components. In summer 2008, Lesina lagoon (SE Italian coastline) was interested by a geographically localized dystrophic crisis which affected up to 8% of the total lagoon surface. Temporal dynamics of principal descriptors of abiotic (water, sediment) and biotic (phytoplankton, benthic macroinvertebrate) compartments have been followed during the 2008 by collecting data inside stressed and control lagoon areas before a dystrophic event and in the six months after the dystrophic event. The aim of the study was to analyse the pathways of ecosystem responses to dystrophic stress, searching for the characteristic scales of ecosystem compartment resistance and resilience. The characteristic time-scale of abiotic and biotic component time responses varied from days, for the selected markers of the water column, to year, for the benthic ones. Short-term biotic and abiotic responses in the water column were strongly coupled while biotic and abiotic responses at the sediment level were remarkably un-coupled. Dynamics and recovery time of water column and benthic components do not match in Lesina following the dystrophic crisis, highlighting an intrinsic individualistic behavior within the lagoon community driving ecosystem processes and ecosystem level responses. Taxonomic and non-taxonomic descriptors of both phytoplankton and benthic macroinvertebrates showed different response patterns as early warning signals and overall resilience. The emphasized differences in the stability components, i.e., resistance and resilience, of water column and sediment abiotic and biotic characteristics as well as of taxonomic and non-taxonomic descriptors has key implication in planning monitoring strategies and programs for transitional waters in the Mediterranean and Black Sea EcoRegions

    Artificial intelligence for target prostate biopsy outcomes prediction the potential application of fuzzy logic

    Background: In current precision prostate cancer (PCa) surgery era the identification of the best patients candidate for prostate biopsy still remains an open issue. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the prostate target biopsy (TB) outcomes could be predicted by using artificial intelligence approach based on a set of clinical pre-biopsy. Methods: Pre-biopsy characteristics in terms of PSA, PSA density, digital rectal examination (DRE), previous prostate biopsies, number of suspicious lesions at mp-MRI, lesion volume, lesion location, and Pi-Rads score were extracted from our prospectively maintained TB database from March 2014 to December 2019. Our approach is based on Fuzzy logic and associative rules mining, with the aim to predict TB outcomes. Results: A total of 1448 patients were included. Using the Frequent-Pattern growth algorithm we extracted 875 rules and used to build the fuzzy classifier. 963 subjects were classified whereas for the remaining 484 subjects were not classified since no rules matched with their input variables. Analyzing the classified subjects we obtained a specificity of 59.2% and sensitivity of 90.8% with a negative and the positive predictive values of 81.3% and 76.6%, respectively. In particular, focusing on ISUP ≥ 3 PCa, our model is able to correctly predict the biopsy outcomes in 98.1% of the cases. Conclusions: In this study we demonstrated that the possibility to look at several pre-biopsy variables simultaneously with artificial intelligence algorithms can improve the prediction of TB outcomes, outclassing the performance of PSA, its derivates and MRI alone

    Highly ionized region surrounding SN Refsdal revealed by MUSE

    Supernova (SN) Refsdal is the first multiply imaged, highly magnified, and spatially resolved SN ever observed. The SN exploded in a highly magnified spiral galaxy at z = 1.49 behind the Frontier Fields cluster MACS1149, and provides a unique opportunity to study the environment of SNe at high z. We exploit the time delay between multiple images to determine the properties of the SN and its environment before, during, and after the SN exploded. We use the integral-field spectrograph MUSE on the VLT to simultaneously target all observed and model-predicted positions of SN Refsdal. We find Mg ii emission at all positions of SN Refsdal, accompanied by weak Fe ii* emission at two positions. The measured ratios of [O ii] to Mg ii emission of 10–20 indicate a high degree of ionization with low metallicity. Because the same high degree of ionization is found in all images, and our spatial resolution is too coarse to resolve the region of influence of SN Refsdal, we conclude that this high degree of ionization has been produced by previous SNe or a young and hot stellar population. We find no variability of the [O ii] line over a period of 57 days. This suggests that there is no variation in the [O ii] luminosity of the SN over this period, or that the SN has a small contribution to the integrated [O ii] emission over the scale resolved by our observations

    Imaging performance above 150 keV of the wide field monitor on board the ASTENA concept mission

    A new detection system for X-/Gamma-ray broad energy passband detectors for astronomy has been developed. This system is based on Silicon Drift Detectors (SDDs) coupled with scintillator bars; the SDDs act as a direct detector of soft (<30 keV) X-ray photons, while hard X-/Gamma-rays are stopped by the scintillator bars and the scintillation light is collected by the SDDs. With this configuration, it is possible to build compact, position sensitive detectors with unprecedented energy passband (2 keV - 10/20 MeV). The X and Gamma-ray Imaging Spectrometer (XGIS) on board the THESEUS mission, selected for Phase 0 study for M7, exploits this innovative detection system. The Wide Field Monitor - Imager and Spectrometer (WFM-IS) of the ASTENA (Advanced Surveyor of Transient Events and Nuclear Astrophysics) mission concept consists of 12 independent detection units, also based on this new technology. For the WFM-IS, a coded mask provides imaging capabilities up to 150 keV, while above this limit the instrument will act as a full sky spectrometer. However, it is possible to extend imaging capabilities above this limit by alternatively exploiting the Compton kinematics reconstruction or by using the information from the relative fluxes measured by the different cameras.     The role of grade of injury in non-operative management of blunt hepatic and splenic trauma. Case series from a multicenter experience

    This retrospective study shows the results of a 2 years application of a clinical pathway concerning the indications to NOM based on the patient's hemodynamic answer instead of on the injury grade of the lesions.We conducted a retrospective study applied on a patient's cohort, admitted in "Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Ospedali Riuniti of Ancona" and in the Digestive and Emergency Surgery Department of the Santa Maria of Terni hospital between September 2015 and December 2017, all affected by blunt abdominal trauma, involving liver, spleen or both of them managed conservatively. Patients were divided into 3 main groups according to their hemodynamic response to a fluid administration: stable (group A), transient responder (group B) and unstable (group C). Management of patients was performed according to specific institutional pathway, and only patients from category A and B were treated conservatively regardless of the injury grade of lesions.From October 2015 to December 2017, a total amount of 111 trauma patients were treated with NOM. Each patient underwent CT scan at his admission. No contrast pooling was found in 50 pts. (45.04%). Contrast pooling was found in 61 patients (54.95%). The NOM overall outcome resulted in success in 107 patients (96.4%). NOM was successful in 100% of cases of liver trauma patients and was successful in 94.7% of splenic trauma patients (72/76). NOM failure occurred in 4 patients (5.3%) treated for spleen injuries. All these patients received splenectomy: in 1 case to treat pseudoaneurysm, (AAST, American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, grade of injury II), in 2 cases because of re-bleeding (AAST grade of injury IV) and in the remaining case was necessary to stop monitoring spleen because the patient should undergo to orthopedic procedure to treat pelvis fracture (AAST grade of injury II).Non-operative management for blunt hepatic and splenic lesions in stable or stabilizable patients seems to be the choice of treatment regardless of the grade of lesions according to the AAST Organ Injury Scale
