Genetic Consideration of Schizotypal Traits: A Review
Schizotypal traits are of interest and importance in their own right and also have theoretical and clinical associations with schizophrenia. These traits comprise attenuated psychotic symptoms, social withdrawal, reduced cognitive capacity, and affective dysregulation. The link between schizotypal traits and psychotic disorders has long since been debated. The status of knowledge at this point is such schizotypal traits are a risk for psychotic disorders, but in and of themselves only confer liability, with other risk factors needing to be present before a transition to psychosis occurs. Investigation of schizotypal traits also has the possibility to inform clinical and research pursuits concerning those who do not make a transition to psychotic disorders. A growing body of literature has investigated the genetic underpinnings of schizotypal traits. Here, we review association, family studies and describe genetic disorders where the expression of schizotypal traits has been investigated. We conducted a thorough review of the existing literature, with multiple search engines, references, and linked articles being searched for relevance to the current review. All articles and book chapters in English were sourced and reviewed for inclusion. Family studies demonstrate that schizotypal traits are elevated with increasing genetic proximity to schizophrenia and some chromosomal regions have been associated with schizotypy. Genes associated with schizophrenia have provided the initial start point for the investigation of candidate genes for schizotypal traits; neurobiological pathways of significance have guided selection of genes of interest. Given the chromosomal regions associated with schizophrenia, some genetic disorders have also considered the expression of schizotypal traits. Genetic disorders considered all comprise a profile of cognitive deficits and over representation of psychotic disorders compared to the general population. We conclude that genetic variations associated with schizotypal traits require further investigation, perhaps with targeted phenotypes narrowed to assist in refining the clinical end point of significance

Compilation of Information on the Transonic Attachment of Flows at the Leading Edges of Airfoils
Schlieren photographs have been compiled of the two-dimensional flow at transonic speeds past 37 airfoils. These airfoils have variously shaped profiles, and some are related in thickness and camber. The data for these airfoils were analyzed to provide basic information on the flow changes involved and to determine factors affecting transonic-flow attachment, which is a transition from separated to unseparated flow at the leading edges of two-dimensional airfoils at fixed angles as the subsonic Mach number is increased
Nigeriaâs Unity, Development and Civil Society: The Imperative of Good Governance
Before the arrival of the British imperialist, there was no united entity called Nigeria. There was also nothing like political infrastructure known as âregionsâ. Nigeria comprises of about 250 ethnic groups who were doing things as entity of their own before the British colonizers integrated Nigeria to be one. The merger could be described as âforced unionâ. The introduction of indirect rule by the British imperial master orchestrated divide and rule in Nigeria, it also gave rise to ethnic consciousness. It is on this backdrop that this study evaluated the role of governance in Nigeriaâs unity with a view to identifying the areas of problems. Survey research method was adopted. Data collected through questionnaire were analyzed using Z-test. Myriads of factors were identified as responsible for disunity and separatist agitation in Nigeria. The factors were critically discussed and suggestions proffered. Essentially it is the position of the paper that there should be reduction of scarcity and inequality through revolutionary development. Development which should be predicated on equity and fairness. The rotation of power to ensure that all ethnic groups are given opportunity is also recommended. Also the paper recommended that the emphasis on ethnicity/tribe or place of origin in official forms should be abolished
Postpartum contraception counseling and uptake in an uninsured population
Objective: Assess postpartum contraceptive preferences and use before and after implementation of interventions to improve contraceptive counseling at a free clinic for uninsured pregnant patients. Methods: This was a pre- and post-intervention observational study in Iowa City, Iowa, that included patients from February 2019 â December 2021. Multilingual educational charts and an electronic medical record (EMR) template reminder to prompt antenatal contraceptive discussion were implemented in April 2021. Results: There were 117 pre-intervention patients and 33 post-intervention. Prior to the intervention, 30% of patients had no documentation of contraceptive counseling; afterward, 3% had no documentation (p=.001). Thirty-three percent of patients obtained highly or moderately effective contraception prior to the interventions and 52% did after (p=.068). Conclusions: Multi-lingual educational handouts and an EMR template reminder were associated with increased postpartum contraceptive counseling; contraceptive use also generally increased with the interventions. Increasing access to contraceptive education may increase contraceptive autonomy in underserved populations
Neuropsychiatric Outcomes in UK Military Veterans with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Vestibular Dysfunction
Objective: To estimate the frequency of vestibular dysfunction following blunt, blast, and blunt & blast mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and thereon assess the long-term impact of vestibular dysfunction on neurobehavioral function and disability independently of co-morbid psychiatric symptoms. Setting: Combat Stress residential and Veteransâ Outreach drop-in centres for psychological support. Participants: 162 help-seeking UK military veterans. Main measures: Self-reported frequency and severity of mTBI (using the Ohio State Identification Method), Vertigo Symptom Scale, PTSD checklist for DSM5, Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory, HIT6, Memory Complaints Inventory, WHO Disability Assessment Scale 2.0. Results: 72% of the sample reported one or more mTBI over their lifetime. Chi-square analyses indicated that vestibular disturbance, which affected 69% of participants, was equally prevalent following blunt (59%) or blast (47%) injury and most prevalent following blunt and blast combined (83%). Mediation analysis indicated that when PTSD, depression and anxiety were taken into account, vestibular dysfunction in participants with mTBI was directly and independently associated with increased postconcussive symptoms and functional disability. Conclusion: Vestibular dysfunction is common after combined blunt and blast mTBI and singularly predictive of poor long-term mental health. From a treatment perspective, vestibular rehabilitation may provide relief from postconcussive symptoms other than dizziness and imbalance
